When it comes to politics in Malaysia, no politician is safe from graphic artist Fahmi Reza who has been using his provocative art to call out those in power for years. But charges against the outspoken designer are mounting. He has faced threats and lawsuits, and was recently arrested for his brand of political satire. He is currently under six investigations under Malaysia's sedition and communications acts.
VICE World News’ Heather Chen speaks to the artist about his experiences with censorship in Malaysia under these new laws.

As a progressive member of the society, which tolerated more of the governmental ideologies and condemning the one against it, I don't think a left-wing activist such as Fahmi or well known as "Kuasasiswa" or "Youth Power" is a bad thing. It is not that everything he does is good but at least he put the right amount of pressure to the government. That is what the democracy is all about right? The check and balance. Graphic disobedience is one way to criticize what is wrong and whatnot about the government. Kudos to you Fahmi, you are going to places, though not sure which place it is but sure you are going somewhere.

At first previously, I thought that his view and action is quite loud and hard-core, sorts like against the norms in Malaysia. But it turns slowly that my view on him is changed as I'm pretty aware that he just standing on the people's rights and freedom in expressing opinion towards the ruling government, and having a free, neutral space to discuss or against the injustice in the government and principle of democracy in Malaysia. He's doing good in graphic, while the best way to critics the government and authorities' wrongdoing and injustice is through art and graphic approaches. I'm pretty sure that many Malaysians are started to support his view and action, and stand together with him to restore the good principle of democracy, freedom of expression and establishment of good government from a clean and virtue election process in Malaysia.

As a Chinese living in Malaysia, I sincerely think that his efforts are futile or minimal at best. He doesn't realize how much race/religion is woven into the politics of Malaysia. The only thing tying us up together is money (better economic prospects). Plus, Malaysians are known to love white lies rather than the truth because it tastes sweeter. It's not only the government, there are also numerous cases when people were scrutinized or frowned upon for trying to do good. (bersih and red-shirt protests, Mahathir's granddaughter's backlash for supporting a global movement, Najib's backlash for advocating equality, etc) Democracy in Malaysia has always been dead, some just chose to believe otherwise.

Fahmi Reza is our Malaysian hero, no question. Nk betul² ubah situasi buruk politik di negara kita? Can, every state has a Fahmi Reza, we jz need to keep multiplying what Fahmi has been doing, sadly, bukan segelintir tapi kebanyakan kita rakyat Malaysia x berani menentang kerajaan, inilah sbb korang dh bagi chance kpd sesiapa yg pegang kuasa tu meneruskan kebebasan dorang ni utk menyalahgunakan kuasa. Jadi bila sebuah kerajaan gagal, sebelum kita tiao gomen lah, tiao pembangkang lah, adakah kita hentikan sebentar dan fikirkan tentang kita sendiri kah? Kita ni negara demokrasi, tapi knp suara rakyat pulak yg kena didiamkan seperti sebuah negara komunis? Betulkah kamurang benci komunis? Sya rasa ya dan tidak, ya sbb suara² kat media sosial kamurang yg bersorak anti-komunis dan tidak sbb sya rasa kamurang kurang faham apa yg kamurang betul² bencikan, sbb nampaknya, selama ni, rakyat ramai yg membenarkan menteri² laknatullah ni berperangai seperti komunis, korang kutuk kerajaan saja, pd mlm yg sma kena tangkap, semua takut dan berdiam saja kemudian. Oleh itu, knp sya ckp jika setiap negeri ada seorang aktivis seperti Fahmi Reza, berani bersuara, berani mengutuk kerajaan jika kerajaan gagal, walaupun dah nyawa² ikan. Entahlah, mungkin 1 abad kemudian pun sma juga situasi politik di negara kita, kena bayar lepas tu berdiam saja. Mana maruah? Respect to u bro Fahmi Reza, let us keep fighting against fascism until every single corrupted beings will never see the lights of our parliament again, then a graceful revolution and a fruitful reformation will be the light for us Malaysians. Ciao

I respect him about protesting what is not right in our government whether it's from BN or PH, both of them get whacked by him but I would never agree with his stance being a pro lgbt at all. If he drops this shit, he would get my support 100%.

not even close because our army is not under the power of some politicians or generals like during the Soeharto regime but instead it's under our King. but yeah the last part quite true when our 4th PM, Mahathir being our PM, abused his power to catch whoever criticized him and put him in jail without any trial at all. This shit does happen today but it's quite rare.
