These speed traps are common in small towns. I’ve found so many times where the speed limit drops 10-20mph for no reason. And lo and behold there’s a cop waiting to grab people. My advice is two things - 1: if you’re in a place you don’t know, turn whatever speed limit alert you have on your smartphone on at its loudest. It’s not reliable, but it may save you. 2: Keep your head up. If you’re not on a highway, speeds change frequently. Watch for markers. Finally, I think you handled the situation well. Albeit, I wouldn’t make excuses for why the officer did or didn’t treat you well. His job is to enforce the law. Too many cops think their job is to punish people.

We smoke weed in college like most people our age at this school. Things were fine until we went through a small town early in the morning. We got pulled over and they said we were going 30 in a 15mph zone. It had been 35 the whole way but suddenly dropped but went immediately back up to 35 a mile down the road. Cop loved it, got excited when he saw we were young and from out of town. We got detained, searched, and then the car was searched. Knew it was bad then because 4 other cars showed up and they were high fiving. They tried to make us both own up to a tiny bit of weed, didn’t work. Buddy took the fall for it and I took the fall for the alcohol. They took us for everything we were worth and put us on the second page of the newspaper. I’ll never forget what they did and how happy they were over that or how bad it messed up my life for a misdemeanor. The rider sees the truck and instantly sets his front tire down at the exact moment that he slammed the back of the truck and shoved his head through the back of the trucks trailer doors. With him hanging lifeless out the rear of the truck I had to speed ahead and flag the trucker over to tell him what just happened. He was very shaken up and said he never felt the guy hit him. While I do agree with you in regards to being able to deescalate the situation, there is nothing wrong with knowing the law and understanding when an officer is trying to pull one over on a citizen....whether it's to get info when a citizen does not have to provide any, or whether that officer wants to just abuse his power. While I do see why arguing with an officer, even if you do really know the law and your rights, is not a helpful tactic...telling people "not to listen to roadside attorneys" or what have you just reinforces the notion that all a cop wants you to be is compliant.... especially when said officer is abusing his power "because he is human and having a bad day". Bad day or not, we pay their salary, and the public is starting to notice when an officer is really wanting to "protect and serve", and when they want to show how great they are and generate lost revenue for the town, county, or state. I'll always respect the law and the officers risking their lives to uphold it and protect the community. I also think that officers need WAAY more training in regards to dealing with citizens.

As an example, having a lot of members of my family in the medical profession that see and go through a lot of trauma, they are expected to act professionally and have good bedside manner with every patient interaction. As a professional in any field, the expectation is to be professional in your interactions, otherwise you are just not good at your job. I know it happens, and the way you handled it was the reason it didn't get out of control. However, as you know not everyone will act the way you did, and the "professional" on the scene should be able to act "professionally" and we shouldn't excuse that. Also, I'm similar to you in that I would have dealt with the situation in the same manner as you did, but I do expect people who are supposed to be professionals to act that way. Why should someone's attitude toward an agent of the state actively looking for any crimes you may have committed have any bearing on whether or not a person is locked up in cage? I mean if you are just calling out the cop's behavior I agree that's what was happening but I think that person is the last person that should be a LEO. Speeding alone should not be enough for anyone to go to jail and as far as the attitude thing well the cop would get whatever he gave me. Either way other than showing my license, registration and insurance if necessary and would not say another word at that point. People forget they have the right to remain silent and I know now to use it.

@@ATHTSupply Thank you for your question. Let me make myself clear before I reply, I in no way condone the actions of the trooper in this video whatsoever. No it is not a requirement for you to be polite or nice, however it isn’t going to make things any easier for you or whoever you may encounter if you’re both being complete A-holes. Now I’ve never even contemplated taking someone to jail over a speeding charge unless there was an underlying charge that would warrant an arrest, I.e arrest warrants, DUI..but please do keep in mind of officer discretion. You may or may not run into someone who is heavy by the book or you may run into someone who is a little more lenient.

Many years ago, I used to know some sport bike guys in Seattle. They got pull over for speeding so often, they had a lawyer on retainer. They paid him a lot rather than the govt, but he kept them from loosing their license. I once put a bike under a school bus. Bus was making a left turn in an intersection and for some unknown reason jammed on the brakes. I moved to the shoulder to brake so no one would ram me from behind. Silt on the shoulder from winter washed the front end when I applied the brake (pre ABS). I let go of the brake and the bars did a tank slapper, tossed me off and wedged itself under the bus bumper. I got a ticket for failure to maintain, because they failed to maintain the road. Anyway, I called a lawyer and he said he could normally get tickets dismissed, "but if you hit a school bus, you're going to have to eat that one." Point being, a lawyer will still cost you, but will keep points off your license.

Having self control isn’t a super human ability and it 100% should be expected from those we trust with our lives. It’s absurd to think otherwise. Their job is not that hard and not even close to being one of the most dangerous. The number killer of cops is cops via car accidents. Everyone that drives more than 30 minutes to work has a job just as dangerous as most police just in driving to work. Most children have more patience than police. It’s completely unacceptable and needs to change. Just the fact that you take the threat of arrest so lightly says a lot about your way of thinking. I’m not criticizing the way you handled the situation just how you’re underplaying his disrespect for the people he’s sworn to protect. If it’s unacceptable for fast food workers to treat people that way it damn sure should be for police.

About 10 years ago, I was trying to outrun a thunderstorm on my way home from my motorcycle shop. Blew through a 45 at like 90… Pulled over by LEO ( the state I was in at the time has a “No Motorcycle Chase” reg for LEO’s) The totally custom cafe I was on would have left them in the dust if I was so inclined. When asked “What my problem was?” I pointed to the sky and said I was not looking forward to getting drenched (not to mention the cafe I was on was NOT a bike that would handle heavy rain). Being the affable person I am, and the LEO wanted to know a little bit about the obvious custom bike I was on. (It would have failed EVERYTHING by DMV if they demanded I get the bike inspected) Gave him my business card, asked for his, even tried to set up an appointment at my shop to build HIM a custom…lol. As the sky darkened more and more, LEO ran my info and came back with my ticket, for 64 in a 45! LEO explained that I seemed like a reasonable person, gave me the mangled dead bike rider speech, and told me that in that state, 20 over was “Reckless Endangerment”, subject to arrest, license suspension, criminal record etc. The rain started to patter on the hood of the Patrol, he looked at me and said “Better get moving if you don’t want to get soaked!” I never get controversial with LEO. They are doing a job like the rest of us. It’s just that the usual encounter with them is only the result of somebody breaking the law. If you mind your P’s and Q’s, don’t act like an A.H. give only the information requested and treat them with respect (It’s a hella dangerous job they do) everything can go smoothly. Never did sell him a bike though…

Let me be clear when i say, "excersize their rights." i dont mean throw every cus word you can at an officer. Although cusing is expressive, it is your right to do so publicly. What I mean is to have resonable questions. dont feel pressure to incriminate yourself when asked incriminateing questions. flex the 5th because you very well may be talking with a narcissist who's reckless with his authority. I say this because I work with guys who rely on you not being well versed with your rights. and manipulate and intimidate people into searches, etc.... it is perfectly resonable to ask why an officer is so addimate about a vehicle search and questioned in EVERYTHING they do throughout your interaction with them because YOUR ass is on the line. We need to hold officers to the standard that THEY SIGHNED UP for, not to prey on citizens and be revenue generaters. And yes, it is still perfectly possible to address bad guys with their right fully intact. .... im an American citizen before im am an Officer and to Take an oath to the constitution should absolutely mean more you officers then it currently does and THATS why things are the way that they are, blind support for the blue line.

As a former LEO, I commend you for being very level-headed about this. Another contributing factor to the animosity towards bikers he seemed to be showing, at the beginning, is the plethora of videos of aggressive, illegal bike riding that this platform is full of. If you own a motorcycle, as I do, Google knows it unless you have just not said anything online about it. So I'm sure everyone else here has the same experience that I do, going through the short videos, which is where I first found this. Same as on Facebook, I can't scroll through more than 10 to 15 videos without seeing a motorcycle video, and the most popular of those are always the guys doing wheelies in traffic, weaving in and out of traffic, and then you have the guys on the off-road bikes literally taking over intersections and city streets. My experience has been that most police officers see the obvious difference between people riding Harleys, gold wings and other cruising bikes, as compared to the crazy KZbin videos. I think this guy saw less of a distinction between you and those guys. Had he seen my fat butt, sitting on my Road Glide Ultra, he may have just pulled up beside me and gave me a hand motion to slow down. That might be a benefit of having all this gray hair sticking out of the bottom of my helmet.😂

Where you are coming from and the time of day is irrelevant. If you are going to say you have a firearm, say it, don't start an irrelevant story. He said he didn't care because you were talking nonsense instead of simply saying, " I have a weapon." Not being able to see the signs is not an excuse, you shouldn't even be riding if that's the case. You were wrong in every aspect of this encounter, the cop did nothing wrong.
@GearsGadgets Жыл бұрын
First to say where you are coming from and time of day is irrelevant is absurd. The actual violation written was for speed greater than reasonable and prudent which by definition would include location, time of day, weather, traffic, etc. Also known as "Circumstances" "A person shall not drive a vehicle on a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the circumstances" The reason I sounded like a stumbling bumbling moron is because of that officer oddly pulling up along side of me, mentioning arrest and jail, then asking me to pull off the road, then me in my head wondering as he walked up if I was under arrest, or if I should be talking, and just trying to pull my earplugs out to actually start a conversation with this officer. HE created that scenario of a very confusing encounter because of his actions. Your armchair QB approach of me telling this officer who JUST told me that I was under arrest and going to jail "I have a weapon" would have only made this hothead who was patrolling middle of nowhere, likely without backup, detain me in handcuffs. The goal as a citizen is to NEVER get placed in handcuffs because once they go on, it's FAR more unlikely for them to come off. While I appreciate you placing blame on me for getting into the situation I was in, dismissing law enforcement approach and acting as if citizens have been trained on a script to abide by is absurd. Officers are the ones trained, they are the ones initiating the interaction, they are the ones who are primarily responsible for the initial environment created, they own 100% of that until the citizen becomes an uncooperative / combative idiot. To say the cop did nothing wrong is absurd, the same way you tell me what I SHOULD have said, I can tell you what the COP should have said. WAY easier to play that game from the recliner, a lot harder to do it in realtime.

Telling him the obvious? He knew where I was coming from? 99.99999% of traffic stops start with "Do you know why I pulled you over"...... "Where are you coming from". I was literally doing police interaction protocol and he cut me off because he had a poor attitude. These aren't excuses, they are actual things that happened. I owned 100% of my actions to that officer and didn't make an excuse for anything. I was distracted, I didn't know how fast I was going, and I apologized. You are hung up on one sentence that I got wrong and saying it's a sorry excuse, you have GOT to be undoubtebly the hardest and least fun person to communicate with in real life interactions.

I would rather play the odds by doing less things to aggravate the police to keep it uneventful.

I used to be a speeder in my younger days. I was always late, always in a hurry. So I got pulled over many many times. I had one problem, I would never show up for court. So it got to the point that I was always driving with a warrant. I never tried running from the cops. I knew I was going to jail. I never once faulted the cops for my own stupidity. Every interaction I’ve ever had with cops went completely uneventful. I’ve even had 2 cops apologize for arresting me and telling me that if they knew what I was like, they wouldn’t have arrested me. My point is this guy is 100% right. There is never a situation that you should disrespect the cop. I do have to say that lately I’ve seen videos of interactions with cops that went horribly bad. And the cops have been in the wrong. So I’ve lost a lot of respect for cops overall. But if I get pulled over again, I will still be respectful.
