A preview of the full Art Deco tray restoration. Available for download from our website (www.arc-services.com.au).
In the full 1.5 hour video I show the complete restoration of the tray and not only demonstrate how to lay water damaged lifting marquetry veneer and show the Frenchpolishing process in full.
All of the techniques shown have their application in traditional furniture restoration outside of the tray repair
There is a clear demonstration of how to safely reactivate the original glue with tips on how to penetrate the lifting veneer without damaging the adhering surface or the veneer. I will show how to make and use animal glue ( also called pearl , scotch,& hide glue). This is followed by a demonstration of how to lay veneer bubbles
The importance of the correct sequence of procedures in the process to prevent unintended or irreversible damage are clearly shown
I will show how to strip the surface of old finish and prepare it for the polishing process and how to make and apply shellac using the French polishing technique allowing for an aged wax finish not a high shine.
How to make a traditional polishing rubber is also shown The correct sanding procedure is shown ensuring that the surface remains in tact and no damage is done to the aged texture of the veneer.
Local repairs are shown using wax water soluble filler and various stains.
Many 'How To' videos and tutorials are available on both our Thinking Hand Studios and ARC websites for those interested in traditional conservation, restoration and hand making techniques.
