The “othering” of communities is what allows us to stereotype and thus discriminate. Tonika Johnson presents us with her projects that have helped to bridge communities in Chicago and break the barriers that divide us. Tonika Johnson is a visual artist/photographer based in Englewood. She obtained a BA in Journalism & Photography from Columbia College Chicago and a MBA from National Louis University. From there, she co-founded and continues to work as a Program Manager for Resident Association of Greater Englewood (RAGE). She is known for her advocacy against the negative media coverage of poverty and crime of Englewood through her photography and exhibitions which have been featured at Rootwork Gallery in Pilsen, Chicago Cultural Center, Loyola University Museum of Art, and the Harold Washington Library Center. Her photo essay “Life Beyond The Headlines” was featured by Chicago Reader. Most recently, she worked on Folded Map which is a multi-media project that emphasizes residential segregation in Chicago that helped to bring different communities together. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
