Great pick, Craig. Another gem of a song by Jimmy Webb, sung angelically by Garfunkel. Webb was smitten with the Welsh beauty Rosemarie Frankland, who was Miss World in 1961. She wasn't interested, but Webb took his best shot, writing a song about her that he played for her in a romantic setting at the Dorchester Hotel in London. After he played the song, Frankland declared it "silly," leaving him crestfallen. So, Webb waited almost a decade before offering it to Art on his solo album "Angel Clare" in 1973. Webb based the melody on the hymns Webb grew up listening to. His father was a Baptist preacher. Thanks for the reaction, Harri.

I will sing this for my beloved at our union. The song is about how the love they share takes them deeply into healing their wounds and how beautiful this is. True love is a mystery sometimes and requires of us to go the distance into ourselves before we can come to the other whole. This ...to me is the most beautiful song i know.

I have always preferred Arts solo output to Simons. It seems as if, in retrospect, Art may have been more of a driving force in the arrangements of their Simon and Garfunkel albums. His solo work feels more similar to the S and G material than Simons does.

Watching the reunion concert in Central Park one thing really stood out. They did S&G songs and also some solo work. When they did a few of Simon's songs (Kodachrome, Me and Julio, etc) it was so obvious there isn't a Paul Simon song that can't be improved by a touch of Garfunkel.

I haven't heard this song in years. I've always loved Art Garfunkel's voice. His Breakaway album is one of my favorites. Not a bad track on it. But I would especially like to highlight two songs from it. One is "I Only Have Eyes For You" which is a cover of a song made famous by The Flamingos in 1959 (it was on the soundtrack of the movie "American Graffiti"). The other song that I especially recommend is "99 Miles From L.A." which I think you would absolutely love. Thanks Harri.

OK my take on this is, that there are two people who are super sensitive, and any misunderstanding results in a bruise to the heart, because there is great love between them. In spite of everything, he says, I love you, and that's all I know. I think it is asking for forgiveness for the unintended slights, that might have wounded a heart. Nothing lasts forever and the endings always come too soon, so just enjoy the love, because it is all I know.

Hi Harri. I always love your thoughtful reactions and I am delighted you reacted to "All I Know." It is one of my favorite songs ever, and Art Garfunkel does both a sensitive reading of the lyric and an exquisite vocal performance. I have never heard this as about an abusive relationship. People bruise each other's feelings, especially people who care deeply about one another. I've also never heard it as a eulogy. It is a "goodbye song"--it is goodbye to the person and the relationship. It's a breakup song. But I think it can be about friendship as well as love. Art did not write it, but I can imagine he might have thought of Paul Simon at times when he sang it. They've both talked about knowing each other so well and for so long that they knew how to do subtle things that would really bother the other person. So, "I bruise you / You bruise me./ We both bruise too easily." Also, it's hard to hear the lines "When the singer's gone / Let the song go on" and not think about how Art continues to sing Paul's songs, especially "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her."

One of the most beautiful songs ever, composed by the gifted Jimmy Webb who wrote Glen Campbell's incredible hits, "Wichita Lineman" and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" but I want to credit the extraordinary talents of the pianist on this track, Larry Knechtel, who was part of the Wrecking Crew as well as a member of Bread back in the '60s and '70s. Larry got a Grammy for his work on "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and I believe he came up with the beautiful intro to that huge hit by Simon & Garfunkel. He was the keyboard player on that hit as well. Harri, if you get any spare time, you should watch the documentary "The Wrecking Crew" for some fascinating background on so much of the timeless music we boomers were weaned on. Fun fact: Art Garfunkel dated the actress/director Penny Marshall (from Laverne & Shirley) for 3-1/2 years back in the '80s. I discovered this while reading her autobiography a few years ago.

It never occurred to me that this might be a farewell song. I thought maybe he was saying, “we love each other so let’s treat each other better.” I’m so glad you noticed how his voice and the strings melded into one note. I’ve always liked that about this song. Not many singers can do that. Powerful voice. Good review, Harri. You usually find something about a song that I missed. This time it was the “farewell” aspect.

Garfunkel is yet another underrated vocalist as was Karen Carpenter. I went out and bought this as a 45" record after hearing it on the jukebox at Mylo all bar haunt. As soon as the Angel Claire album was released , I bought the album for the better fidelity. Like it almost in entirely. The Mary Was An Only Child is another standout on the album. Interestingly. However, Jimmy Webb, who wrote this song, recorded his own version (it here on You Tube). Whole this version is more a cathartic, "that's how life sadly goes", Webb's version is more darkly lamenting. I really am enamored with both versions. BTW, Garfunkle completely lost his singing voice for a span of years and has fought to bring it back as much as possible.

I rarely listen to Paul Simon's solo work, good though it is, I much prefer Art Garfunkel's music. His voice is amazing, his first 4 albums are excellent. His 3rd album "Watermark" consists of mostly songs written by Jimmy Webb, same as this one. It's in my top 10 favorite albums of all time. Each song is like a fine painting. I was able to see him in concert at a state park back in 1994, it was magical. His young son was with him and looked just like him only miniaturized.

I like Jimmy Webb but I think this is not his best work. He wrote other expressive and more meaningful songs. Art Garfunkel - in contrast to Paul Simon - never managed to achieve a similar level of success as in the S&G days. For more than 50 years after the split he was overshadowed by Paul.

Blew his career by not thanking his lucky stars to have Had by his upper side, instead letting his misplaced cloud his vision, as most people lose interest in a voice that doesn’t have much to say. His career after Simon lasted about 25 minutes, excepting the couple of times they reunited for a nostalgic performance. This song is a good example, great voice, middling song, lack luster performance. Meanwhile, Simon never left the stage without his own consent.
