Art Marketing: Do You Need a Mailing List?

I love that Google + shows your posts to everyone you choose to show it to. They also make it easier to form groups of people so you can really control your message yourself.

fairythere You can show a post to everyone but will they get them in email? or only as a notification? Or whe they log in, I find G+ a bit confusing but I see G+ comments in my youtube videos, it is definitely part of your marketing plan for sure! Not a replacement for a mailing list though because as with all social media it can go away of the gattekeepers can change who sees what and how they notify people esp. when a plat for =m becomes popular:)

Hi Lindsay! If you every want to come to beautiful, sunny, San Diego, first I WOULD LOVE TO TAKEA CLASS OR TWO FROM YOU (well as many as I can :) ) and I know I could get quite a gathering just from my crafty peeps - so please consider it one day. I also can help with suggestions for travel for you and your family as I was born here in San Diego and know all the areas around. I LOVE watching you each day and I appreciate your time, your knowledge, and the helpful ideas your share with us, but most of all I appreciate your personality and teaching manner. I would always use a service, because it's easy to get in trouble handling your own. First they are easy to hack, it's only a matter of time. One day your notified your mail list is sending spam, and your account has been frozen. If you do not keep your mail list current, suddenly people are reporting you. It's a big commitment, so make sure you're prepared to manage it well. You will need spam protection activated on your account specifically geared to your mail service. Your list can be fine for a long time, then backfire on you. A compromised list can take down a server for hours, and your service provider will hold you responsible.

Linda Anne Calderone That is another reason to use an independent provider where people can sub and unsub themselves and not just sending an email to your customer contacts which can get spammed. Good point!

If you form your own group on G plus then each individual person in the group gets to decide if they get a email for each post in that group. And of course they get to reply right in the group if they choose to. It's probably not a good substitute for a good email list. (Sorry the reply isn't attached to yours. The iPad app doesn't let you reply to comments.)

Do you use a mailing list service to save bandwidth by avoiding your own internet account or because of the feedback?

***** Feedback and most email companies will not let you email more than 25 people at once because of spam laws. Also people,can subscribe and unsub as they want. Also there is no gatekeeper like there is on KZbin and Facebook where the algorithms decide if a subscriber/follower will see your post or not. Also if youtube or facebook go away I will have lost access to all of those followers. It is extra insurance and a way to really reach people and for them to reach me to because if they hit reply they get me:)
