I always liked that Kat wasn't 'cold and uninterested' towards dating not because that trope of not wanting to be a popular girl or some school power struggle like in most other teen movies; its because something traumatic happened to her. So she put up walls and with those walls protected her sister from the same fate.

I think it also shows that deep down, her father's concerns mean something to her. He takes it to a silly level because it's a comedy, but he has a point that most kids aren't prepared for the consequences if BC/condoms fail. That, combined with Joey 🤢, led her to the conclusion that it's not worth the risk. (Don't get me wrong, I'm all for teens having access to whatever sexual health resources they need. But there are so many reasons why having sex that can lead to pregnancy is just not worth it for underage girls.)

i really like this movie but it always annoys me that Bianca is superficial for liking the hot guy but Cameron's crush on bianca is "well intentioned" even though he admits he doesn't know anything about her either.
@artatmidnight
@artatmidnight Жыл бұрын
i didn't bring this up in the video, but you're right! Cameron is just as shallow as Bianca. his crush is based solely on looks. that scene in the car is important for him too because he realizes she isn't perfect & no longer holds her on a pedestal. he only gets the girl once his perception of her becomes realistic

If I had a nickel for every time that Heath Ledger had to publicly embarrass himself for the love of a woman in a movie, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
@AverageWagie

In a Rolling Stone interview, Heath implied he thought this movie was trash but it was what the American audience liked so when he was starting he had to take these kind of roles to move up in his career. He compared romcoms to cocacola which is unhealthy and tastes like crap but everyone gobbles loves it. He sounded relieved when he got his role in Four Feathers which was more like the type of projects he would like to work in.

I cringe as well at those 'public displays of affection' in movies, and usually really hate it, especially between people who don't know each other well. However, this one never really did secondhand embarrass me, and I think it's because, similar to a comment I saw on a different video, he's not really declaring his love, he's making a public fool of himself. He's showing to her he doesn't mind being seen as silly to let her know he likes her, and is willing to put the work in for that. It shows in the scene, most of these scenes are very serious and 'romantic', and in this movie he's clearly aware it's kind of silly what he's doing. But that's just my take, I totally understand when something like that makes you cringe.
@ronniejc
@ronniejc Жыл бұрын
Yeah I also saw it like this. It's not supposed to be romantic but funny, and it was an apology more than a romantic scene. Also, he did something Kat would like that is showing how he doesn't care how other people are seeing him.
@shotinsarajevo

Yep, that's exactly what Cameron tells him to do, "sacrifice yourself on the altar of dignity and even the score". Kat put herself out there and got humiliated, and Patrick had to do the same.

omg yeah, like i love it here bc it's the literal point, to prove he can do the cringiest think and won't be embarrassed as long as she can see how much he wants her attention and how far he's willing to do
@AverageWagie
@AverageWagie Жыл бұрын
Those big shows in affection in movies are extremely cringe because that shit doesn't work in real life. If you watch one of those "public proposals" youtube compilations, they often end with the woman walking away in embarassment without giving an answer or they awkwardly tell the guy "can we talk about this in private for a minute?"
@rowanjoy419
@rowanjoy419 9 ай бұрын
Actually, the reason why people hate it, is because usually is when 2 people don't know each other or they are just friends and the guy does not want to be rejected so ask the girl out in public, but what Patrick did was different, he ask her to go out with him normally but she said no, so he decided to just sing a song to her, he did not ask her anything, did not put her in a position to say yes in front of everyone, he just sing to her like whatever, and he actually got detention.

Underlying Kat's personality is a fear of rejection informed by her experiences. It's not talked about much but i think their mum leaving had a huge affect on the girls and their family dynamic because Kat was coming of age and thrust into these terrible experiences with boys while having no guidance and no adults or older people in her life who could understand. With her mum rejecting her, then Joey, it makes sense that she's so hurt when Patrick doesn't kiss her after the party.

This is a bit off-topic but I really like how Bianca still got to be just as feminine towards the end of the movie. No hate towards masculine women (all women are cool just the way they are) but I really appreciate how the movie doesn't demonize her hyper-fem style like a lot of other teen shows do. I think it'd be really cool if more teen movies embraced people being themselves- whether or not the character's style/outward expression matches gender stereotypes.

I have always absolutely loved this film. I think I was 14 or 15 when my friend and I rented it from Blockbuster (dating myself with that reference). We were so in love with it that we watched it 6 times in 3 days. Two 14 year old, heterosexual boys. Its so great to put this movie on every so often and instead of seeing it get dated with time and with newer perspectives, it just gets better or more beloved. However, I can't believe I never noticed Kat wore those pearls to prom, a symbol of her learning from Bianca like Bianca learned from her. Thanks for pointing that out.

This movie is great. Not only it tackles the women's side but the men's side too, as Cameron and Patrick are opposites and both learn what the other lacks. Cameron learns to be more confident and self assertive while Patrick learns to be more vulnerable and emotional, but this happens in a subtle manner that perhaps a lot of people don't notice, especially since the focus are Bianca and Kat. That's why I like this movie as it gives both perspectives, plus it's a fun and well made film. By the way... Heat analysis! Cheers

I feel you so much about the singing scene! I think it's so embarrassing because it SHOULD be embarrasing, given how they establish the world and characters. It's entirely diegetic while no one else is singing or sings in the movie. It also feels a bit too over the top and unrealistic for the characters, given how they previously express embarassment or regret towards other public acts. The characters are socially aware enough to know what the status quo is (whether they go with it or not), so the fact everyone in the scene has a positive reaction to the singing feels too far out of the expected range of behaviours of most present, especially Kat. Whereas with HSM, there are multiple characters who sing both diegetically and non-diegetically and it's frequently reinforced as expected, natural and accepted.

I agree with you - this movie is very underrated and not just a love story. I think that stands for a lot of Shakespeare's works too though, in the sense that the love stories aren't just love stories. Romeo & Juliet is really a story about tradition, legacy, and rivalries more so than it is about love. In my opinion at least. I also watched this movie for years not realizing that Cameron was played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt lol. Today wasn't the day of realization, but I'm 27 and it was only a few years ago, so...

Is it true that Bianca isn't booksmart or is it just she wants to appear so? She randomly pulls out pretty fluent French (despite the awful pronunciation) when she gets frustrated with Cameron. Also they basically make Kat a gay straight woman. She has no interest in men, she plays football, she's into poetry, she listens to bands like Bikini Kill. Not saying these are only traits of queer women, but all these things together may suggest so...

I hate to break it to you but ive never been so surprised by a character being so much like me as I have with kat. ….I’m straight. Everything that u just said is stereotyping.

I love it because kat is like me seeing right through others to protect others from experiencing the same thing. Even though her little sister obviously thinks she's just being a negative nancy.

at first i hate bianca, i really do. but i watched the rest of the movie and everythings make sense, why is she mad, why she love to get attention, and others. she has the best character development.

There was more I got from Bianca my last rewatch, about two hours ago, and hearing more from you makes so much sense and I understand her more. I never really understood why Bianca wants to go to Prom cause even though she kissed Cameron she still just kinda seemed done with boys in a way but it makes more sense now with just having more autonomy and being able to make her own decisions in the little ways she can. Love this movie and the humor is on point. On a side note I also sometimes get second hand embarrassment in shows but only from drunk kid that doesn’t drink and admits embarrassing stuff, like in Everything Sucks or S3 or 2 of Sex Education. I can’t watch them and always have to fast forward. I also have no idea why and I empathize with you. Doesn’t make sense. Great video!!

I NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHY BIANCA, CAMERON AND MICHAEL WERE SEEN AS "INNOCENT AND WELL INTENDED" WHEN THEY PLAYED THE PART TOO. Cameron wanted to manipulate Kat by using Patrick so he can date Bianca and Michael helped but Patrick is the bad one? Are you fucking joking? They were all extremely selfish and Cameron was beyond annoying. He then has the audacity to be mad at Bianca. And don't get me started on Bianca. She was so superficial and so mean with Kat. She wanted to pressure and guilt trip Kat all so that she can have a date with a random guy that she will never see again so that she gets the "teen experience". Poor Bianca, she never got to date because of her strict sexist archaic father and now because he suddenly created a new "rule" which consists of making one of his daughters depend on the love life of the other she wants to use her sister. And how she used Cameron please.

Sometimes I go on KZbin and rewatch the scene where Patrick sings to Kat for fun. It’s one of my favorite scenes ever. It’s so fun and cute. I watch this movie once every year. This year will be my 5th or 6th year watching it. It’s one of the best romcoms ever. Every scene is burned into my brain. I had the biggest crush on both Patrick and Cam watching it for the 1st time lol. I saw a clip on Instagram of these women talking about the movie. And they said Kat is a feminist who hates women. Which I just wholeheartedly disagree with. Like did we watch the same movie? I feel like a lot of people hate on tomboy or feminist characters especially from the 90s. But our views of society has changed so much in the last 20 to 30 years.
why Legally Blonde's intro is cinematic genius
