I love seeing the process. I recently watched a documentary about the Japanese animator Miyazaki (whose films I am an avid fan of) and it charted his process through the development of his latest film The Boy and the Heron (which I had not seen yet). And also his relationships, history, life etc. When I watched it after the documentary, it was a very different experience. Understanding the artist’s process and thoughts adds a meaningful layer to the art - it’s like being attracted to someone only through their looks compared to knowing their mind as well as their looks. The latter is the more richer and meaningful experience.

I really like the idea of the soft sell through a personal connection by ´warming them up', i had never thought to show the process before the work was finished, i guess i need to learn to be ok with feeling vulnerable with un unfinished work, thankyou for such thoughtful videos, i am glad there is someone on youtube on my wavelength!

Very interesting thoughts on a newsletter. I'm a jewelry designer, but I work more in the artistic direction than like a true designer. In fact, my newsletters that tell about something personal are the ones with the greatest response. Not necessarily with the most sale. But this thought that there are many people who will fulfill a wish later gives me a lot of courage. ❤

Thanks for this video. I understand the value in having an email newsletter, but I think I do struggle a lot with knowing what to put in it. For me the real challenge I think is that I'm an abstract digital artist, and I create my art intuitively, so there's generally not anything specific that inspired the work. It just flows out of me, and there's not really any story behind the piece. I could talk a little bit about the intuitive process, but it wouldn't vary much from piece to piece. I know there are other artists that create this way and that it's a completely valid way of creating art, but again, it does have the downside of making it hard to know what to say about any given piece other than "Here's a new piece I made and I really like how it turned out." I think I also sort of fall into that pattern designer category you were talking about. I aim to make my abstract art tileable so I can put it on a variety of print-on-demand products or digital products such as stationery or printable bookmarks, but each art piece is also meant to work on its own and could absolutely be sold as wall prints for those that like abstract art. For this reason, I do consider myself to be a digital fine artist. Perhaps, this means that I would need to lean a bit more heavily on sales in a newsletter than I'd prefer, letting people know about when new prints or other products are available for sale, but it would still be nice to be able to balance it out with other content a bit so it doesn't feel too spammy. Hopefully someday I can find other artists with newsletters that create the way I do so I can see some better examples of how to do things that might be relevant to me.

i do love long newsletters though, they seem like penpalling. they're more intimate and profound. 💛

Thank you for this video. I still wonder though how to differentiate which content I should publish in a free newsletter and what I should keep for paid subscriptions instead…
