I seriously think the city 4-1 game at the ethihad in 2023 scarred arteta. Simve then he has been so obsessed with control and keeping men behind the ball when we attack that it destroys the threat we can create. He was a young manager then and the pressure he faced in that title race may have permanently affected his tactical ideas but he has to understand that we have 3 of the best defensive players in the world (rice saliba and Gabriel) and he has to take more risks in posession especially when we are established and having sustained pressure. No one is asking for ange ball but we need to be more risky and desisve in the final third

@cianomugzy975 exactly I think the question we have to ask with arteta is whether or not he is willing to change. Also of he has the tools to play a different way (I don't think he does. We have way too many attackers that have stagnated or regressed and we need new players in that position) and then it comes down to whether the board will give him the tools he needs to make those tactical changes

When I compare this team to the Wenger title winning teams, and even the teams that 'nearly' achieved, it's clear to me that we lack in that 'chaos factor' that allowed Wengers teams to be so threatening going forward. I suspect that Mikel, having played under Arsene, knows exactly what he needs to do in order to make us a more potent attacking force. The problem being, he would have to accept that we would be more exposed defensively... At the same time though, we are conceding goals anyway, so the caution isn't working

So true and looking at the Liverpool model. Might as well just outscore the opponent. Yeah, concede 3 but we’ll thrash you with 6 or 7. Also, this doesn’t happen in every game. There are only a hand full of games you might have to be a bit more cautious in but as for the rest. Your analysis of Arteta as calculated is spot on. His approach is to use the most optimized method - the one that's most likely to produce a predictable outcome. And this is holding the team back. One area is just random shots outside the box, we rarely do that not because the players can't, but because they're coached to pass the ball around looking for a certain way to enter the box and score. The other way I've seen it is in the argument that we scored the most goals last season so we didn't need a PROPER 9. Scoring the most goals in a season can be achieved by scoring 6 against Sheffield and West Ham when the rehearsed system is working perfectly well, but having a proper hungry 9 will get you goals against stupid low blocks where the system isn't working and all you need is half a chance. That's what City had with Haaland, and that's what we've been lacking. We optimize so much for the system that we don't factor in a plan for when the system isn't working.

I think this actually stems from an adjustment we made early last season. Remember 22/23 where we came storming out the blocks at the beginning, we were epic in the transition phases with our improved press. scoring goals by the bucketload in the process... But we faded hard with injuries and fatigue in the latter few months of the season and i think Arteta realized that it wasn't sustainable. Last season we came out the blocks slow but also controlled and everyone was disappointed we weren't the free flowing team of the previous season. Control has always been high on Arteta's priorities. but became the focus, partly i believe because it conserves energy, reduces the number of sprints and high impact plays (in terms of impact on players bodies), and i include the "timewasting" as part of that too... i don't think that it's a surprise that we went on the end of season run as combined with the mental recharge in Dubai, we were still relatively fresh compared to some of the teams in the league who were playing at 100% every game... i think it also showed in our pretty decent injury record last season (although perhaps we were just storing them up for this season, what do i know) . You're right about Arteta being "statistically the best" and i think his frustrations this season have come from how much of this season has felt out of his control. As much as you're right about transition being the key to unlocking more attacking threat, i suspect because of all of the above thing i mentioned, Arteta will choose to move further into the slow and controlled instruction rather than fix this specific part of our game. It's a trade off he's made and i think he'll stick with it unfortunately.

I share the same sentiment. Statistically, Liverpool should fade off by the end of the season due to injuries and fatigue. One problem is that we are 9 points behind them due to bad luck. It’ll be difficult for us to turn this around. If we are champions or 1 or 2 points behind them this season I wouldn’t mind continuing the same philosophy. I foresee once we have a strong bench with all players have quality backups, next season or one after that we can get back to playing 22/23 style of play. As of now we are not capable of doing that.

Respect the analysis as always and agree with what's letting our football down, but there's something about how this season has started and where we are now that makes me think Mikel is cautious of the teams current bad luck with injuries, refs etc. and in order to not collapse completely, he's tactically avoiding high intensity football that would be required to consistently make use of those transition moments. Don't forget Klop's high press ball initially caught up with them and the team was gutted for a whole season with injuries. It's a Marathon and it's unreasonable to expect a team to win every game dominantly in the hardest league in the world + UCL.

Totally agree, your channel become a more logical place to discuss then any channel in other social media. Its not simply about buying striker/forward, but in every match "we didn't perform" / lose/ do annoying draw, its the same attacking phase. Its not the same seasons ago. This season, they are all instructed to do so. I love what Arteta did for us, his big brain, ideal to make everything about everything, is one makes Arsenal Big again. But also its the same ideal/traits that makes him choose this kind of approach, more conservative approach on certain matches. I don't know, maybe simple because its expose the opponent weakeness (which the result obviously not showing), or just simply manage fitness because of the tight schedules or the depleted squad. Its too mathematical. Exactly the word that fit.

Your point about how Mikel sees football as a mathematical model where things even out over the course of a season, is partly what makes him a poor cup manager, in the sense that things can happen in a cup match but if you lose, you are out whereas the league gives you another chance at redemption. He would rather have a plan A that we stick to than try to adapt to the specific game situation and try to get something out of the current game, thinking that if he's got it right it should eventually work out in the end...but with the margins so less even for chasing the title nowadays, a few slip ups are enough to miss out on the title.

I realize that teams don't even scrumble to defend a high turnover against us. A few times that got to our half in the second half, we won the ball back and Newcastle didn't seem bothered at all because we were going to get back into our methodical and laborious routine. We are not scary at all on the turnovers. We don't create a sense of urgency for the opposition's defence with our high turnovers.

So your analysis of Arteta is kind of reminding me of an issue that my baseball team had with their manager, Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For context, the Dodgers had have the best analytics department in all of baseball and were one of the first teams to really invest in it seriously. They basically used analytics to drive their player acquisitions and also how they approached each game. This would lead to great regular season records, BUT would sometimes be the downfall to the team in the playoffs. Dave was often too over reliant on the analytics and would pull a pitcher that looked like he was on fire for another pitcher simply because it had the more favorable statistical matchup even if that pitcher was not as talented and had been in a minor slump. Fans would claim he "over managed", but in reality the issue was that he relied too much on the data rather than managing based off of feel and intuition on how the current game was progressing and how certain players were playing. Even in a sport that's essentially turn based like baseball, you can't just go off of what the analytics says, you need to factor in things that aren't in the scouting report and sometimes you need to realize that a player is in the zone and you need to just let them cook even if it goes against what the data tells you to do. Now for the happy part, this last season the Dodgers won the world series and it was largely due to Dave just managing based off of his gut feeling and intuition. Obviously data was in play, but there were so many times where he just decided to keep a guy in when he would have taken them out previously or go with a starter instead of throwing a bullpen game. I think Arteta is going through a similar growing pain that Dave did as well. He needs to use his intuition more and adapt his tactics on what he's sensing instead of just going off the script written by the analytics department.

I think youre spot on but its clear to see why arteta is like this. 2 of his main influences coaching-wise (pep and moyes) are very disciplined and structured, offering little creative freedom to their players. This obviously creates exellent defensive and possesion situations which accounts for something like 99% of a match. Tge problem lies in the 1% of the time which relies on individual creativity to create a moment on uncertainty in the opposition team. Imo The wenger element (which can be seen in the way arteta asks his players to contribute in multiple phases and interchange) is yet to be introduced to its fullest and allow that extra bit of freedom to create and go against instructions at times to create unpredictable attacking scenarios. We try these intricate plays in the box that rarely come off because people are glued to their positions. Im hoping that arteta has spent the last few years creating this excellent foundation abd plans to sprinkle that little bit of creativity next to finalise it.

04:07 “often when we win the ball high, we slow it down”… There is a fantastic example in last year’s 2-2 at Chelsea, and I said it before: imagine the ball that led to the 1-touch Rice’s equaliser having gone to Ødegaard instead. He would have stopped it, touched it 10 times in 1 square foot and then passed it to Saka, game lost. There are other aspects I think we miss having a threatening figure. I.e I don’t remember having scored directly from a free kick since Xhaka… And I’m not sure we pose a threat from out of the box more than 10 times in a season. Or an attacker posing aerial threat (yet we keep resorting to crosses, but look at Havetz’s sitter v Newcastle). There is so little variety, that our opponents really only have to nail one defensive aspect right to easily F us. I think the last time I was surprised by how unexpectedly we scored was Nketiah’s third goal v Palace (and I didn’t even like Nketiah)

I think the issue with transition that no one seems to be having regarding our team is, do we have a long range passer in the team that can always, with guarantee, find his man. Liverpool and city have it in Trent/KDB m, who is that player for us. Also, I do feel teams fear us just as much Liverpool, typically it’s why they rarely try and press us, because they’d have to give up spaces in behind for our attackers, our main issue now is our offense is low on confidence, and thus not as reliable with the final action, in addition we don’t have an out an out 10 and that is costing us big big time.

Great video. You articulated what I’ve been wondering for a while: why does our frontline stand around so much in the final third? Why aren’t there runs towards goal? I’d also be curious about your thoughts on this inverted fullback tactic we’re still using. Fullbacks on the touchline can help the wingers play closer to goal. I don’t know the numbers but I imagine we’re near bottom of the league for crosses from fullbacks.

Good video. We are quite a hard watch at the moment and are often ineffective with the ball. Why? We pass too slowly allowing teams to reset, play sideways too often as we are static, and are risk adverse. Strangely we seem more comfortable taking risks with the ball in our own penalty area.

I've been saying for a while now that we need an 18 yard box coach, like we have Jover for set pieces. Arteta appears to be clueless when regarding a striker and the striking elements. He has failed to produce a CF along with ruining the ones he inherited. Laca left and banged the goals in. Auba went from 22, 10 and lastly 4. That was his goal return in Arteta 1st 3 seasons. Last season Auba scored 30 goals in 50 games. It is fine that Arteta can't do everything but he needs to be told that the striker and 18 yard box is the new coaches role, like Jover does set pieces.

Interesting analysis of how Liverpool bomb on when they win the ball. Our boys leg it back to get goal side when we lose it or when there's danger of a counter. I'm not sure our players have the engines to do both.

Teams fear Liverpool, Newcastle..sometimes even chelsea because they ATTACK. No team fears us anymore because they know we'll slow down and wait for an opportunity imo, he have one of the worst attacks in the whole league..statistically this is not true but when watching the game, our attack looks lackluster and hopeful for a mistake. Everyone is scared to take on a player (except timber), and this cannot be just the players faults..i think Arteta has discourage players from takeons without support because he is so hell bent on control Sad honestly, we need change ASAP

Idk where to start, but your really come with the right stuff at the right time to get oyr heads over our arsenal problems, this last game we lost in the cup vs newcastle, really mad eme think, where dis our creativity and coutage go, the only one in the team who was really unpredictable was the 17 yeara old , passing with courage past players elder tham him being around the the game for a while, we need a steixker thats for a FACT, which will at leastbput 25% of out chances in the back of the net, not to mention the wingers, we arw too predictable, long lost were the days when we had Sukur, Bergkam, Henry, Kanu Anelka in attack, Preise Wiltbord, overmars in attack , viera and gilberto marshing the midfield , We had evovled but we arw too pragmatic and predictable , we need ro fine tune of tactics and bring in quality players who will step roght into the 1st 11 and upgrade our team

spot on ! exactly what i have been thinking, I always feel going the money ball approach works very well to build a defense, but to build a good attack you need quite a bit of risk, unpredictability ,creativity and a certain level of freedom, all of which we are lacking in our attack at the moment.

i think the players are too "systematic", the same feelings in the winter period of 23/24 season or the forrest away 22/23. there were no intensity and urgancy to just take a shot or they just didnt know what to do next. it felt like they just did not want to lose but did not need to win at the same time. the balance between runners and ball-to-feet players are off is a good point with only nelli as the only runner but with defensive duties so basically no runners at all in some degree.

Its simple Arteta disallowed high tempo on the ball. He wants his players always to be aware of everything and obviously that perception slows us down a lot. We have such a strong backline they would be perfect for fighting with teams more openly. Saliba, Gabriel and Timber are quick they can cover a lot of space. We have not trained quick transitions in a long time it seems. Its always about gaining possession and never losing it. Its tiring to watch.

the manager needs to make more of his players than focusing on a system. play martinelli high let him make runs in behind and take hes man on. play rice in dm where he can be a sweeper and lay the ball off. and if we're playing trossard, dont play him as a touchline winger. we need him next to the box where he was great last year. shouldnt have sold esr we have no ball carriers ( apart from ethan 'kinda') and we probably need a number 10 like wirtz or musiala

That right there is the exact reason why klopp wanted martinelli was because he can become a great inside forward, look at the game against palace last year or the city game at home last year he was brilliant as an inside forward. But forcing him to play as a touchline winger is just killing his growth

This is a knowledgeable gunner here 😂 I'm a Liverpool fan but football isn't played on paper , emotions run human beings and Liverpool play emotional football , hence the comebacks , constant running , blood and thunder , Klopp started thinking about controlling games since 2020 and finding the balance has been difficult , Slot too has been trying to control games but these crop of players forget about it in second half of games😂

You know how Arteta always talks about the players on the same position raising the level pushing each other to become better? We play it too safe 9/10 times. For Example Look at the ball Trossard played to Martinelli before he hit the post, how many times does arsenal play such balls? in the Wenger days that sort of quick & inciscive pass used to be often, but now its so rare to see, right now we try to walk the ball in except unlike wenger 1. We r very slow in doing it 2. We are not clinical enough with fine quick touch passes in the final third (where space & time is limited)

I would much rather have More 3-1 games where we kill the game by trusting the players. Taking the handbrake off and accepting the risk of conceding one. Than these edgy controlled 1-0 1-1 2-1s. A few 4 or 5 goals feast peppered here and there to lift the spirits sometimes and the goal tally. Spread out some goals in matches and those eve ful bou bha matches start looking different. We have seen the same players and manager displaying that transition threat. Reminds me of the ø pass to martinelli vs bha away last season

Arteta needs to steal more tactics from Newcastle and Eddie Howe than from Slot and Liverpool. Arsenal would have more points than Liverpool with their current offensive production if they knew how to hold a lead. When Eddie Howe decided to keep the lead against Arsenal in their recent FA Cup game, he pulled all offensive personnel off the pitch and defended with two banks of five. He didn't play for a third goal. He didn't order his players to employ time-wasting tactics. He did not wait until the 80th and 90th minute to make the appropriate substitutions and change tactics. He didn't wait until Arsenal scored to make substitutions and change tactics. Forget about Liverpool. Our team does not play the Arsenal way of free-flowing football. However, we would have more points if our manager was more flexible and tactically astute as Eddie Howe.
