In terms of Irish and English writers; they’re probably my favourite too (along with Sheridan Le Fanu and Wilkie Collins.) But in terms of writers not from that area; my favourites include Fyodor Dostoevsky, Alexander Pushkin, Dante, Nietzsche, Dumas, Marcus Aurelius, H.P Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe, Nikolai Gogol and Franz Kafka.

Actually, she is. Look at the views those three channels had while Simon was hosting, and look at the views those channels are getting now. There is a vastly significant drop in viewership. Simon made those channels what they had become. The writers are great, the editors are amazing, but it was Simon that brought the views in. He built those channels from the ground up and Shell's daughter and Karl are driving it back into the ground.

More Ignatius trivia for new fans: • When fellow crime fiction writer Agatha Christie disappeared in 1926, SACD used the help of a medium to find out what happened to her. He wasn't successful. (BTW, she reappeared by herself, apparently unharmed, some 11 days after her disappearance.) • Though _"Elementary, my dear Watson"_ is Sherlock Holmes' catchphrase, he never says those exact words in SACD's original works. However, in movies and TV shows, actors playing Holmes do say that phrase. • Sherlock Holmes describes his logical process of arriving at conclusions from observations as "deduction." However, in most of the instances, he's applying either "abduction" or "induction," very rarely "deduction."

Arthur Conan Doyle believed in Spiritualism and met Edgar Cayce in America. Edgar Cayce was a man who helped over 14,000 people to regain health through his ability to undertake self-hypnotism and while in that state was able to diagnose their illnesses and tell them how they could heal themselves. He was not a doctor but his diagnosis was better than the doctor's of that time could do. Edgar Cayce did not believe in reincarnation but eventually during his life was able to prove that he was wrong and that the soul did not die with the death of the body but continued to survive in another level of consciousness. That was why Conan Doyle continued to give speeches on spiritualism. It is worthwhile getting the history of Edgar Cayce and reading what this man could actually do. The Association for Research and Enlightenment, Inc, in America has put out many books on Edgar Cayce over the years and is still publishing.

Conan Doyle misspelled the English martial arts bartitsu, if anyone wants to look it up! It's so cool, it's a defense arts developed to be able to be performed in full Victorian day time attire, dresses and three piece suits and parasols and canes. The suffragettes learned it to fight the police with. It's beautiful, so elegant, very light and efficient movement, with a super interesting history behind it.

Oh well, might as well rewatch some and watch the Simon videos that I haven’t seen yet. And this chap now.

I've always found it a bit strange that Conan Doyle, the creator of perhaps the greatest of all logicians and concrete realists, should have ended up being such a fervent believer in spiritualism and even believed in all the spiritualist charlatans that were around at the time, he even believed in the photos of the Cottingley fairies which the little girls involved admitted decades later were faked.

I read the entirety of the Sherlock Holmes canon a few years ago. Some are amazing, such as Hound of Baskervilles and The Adventure of the Norwood Builder, are quite good. Others, such as The Adventure of the Creeping Man...well, it's about a professor who tries to become younger using monkey blood and acts like a monkey under its influence. It's laughably bad, to the point that people suspect Doyle had someone else write it!
