Todays Famous Grave visit is the grave of Arthur Rostron, the captain of the RMS Carpathia. The ship that rescued some of the Titanic passengers and crew.
Sir Arthur Henry Rostron, KBE, RD, RNR (14 May 1869 - 4 November 1940) was a British merchant seaman and a seagoing officer for the Cunard Line. He is best known as the captain of the ocean liner RMS Carpathia, when it rescued the survivors from the RMS Titanic after the ship sank in 1912 in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean.

There's a wonderful interview with Captain Rostron on KZbin. He was a magnificent mariner whose ship and crew risked everything to rescue Titanic's survivors. His actions contrast starkly with the lack of them from Captain Lord of the Californian. Her officers observed Titanic's distress rockets from only ten miles away...

Just to add, CQD or come quick, distress was the recognised distress call on Marconi Operators at that point but CQD would never be sent alongside an SOS as both are contradictory. It was only after 30 mins that John Philips complained that he was getting a poor response. Harold Bride said 'Why don't you try the new SOS old man, while we still have time?' Titanics call sign MGY was the second ship in history to send out an SOS. I'm a Titanic Historian for good measure

I wasn't aware so many were rescued, nor was I aware of Sir Arthur Rostron or the Carpathia. The seas and oceans can be terrifying. The late Gordon Lightfoot wrote a song about a 1975 tragedy called The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The "Fitz" was a freighter on the great lakes and was sunk during a storm. All 29 crew were killed.

Captain Rostron will forever be the best Captain for what he did ❤️ Also a big Thank You to Mr. Harold Cottam, the young 21 year old radio operator. He was getting ready to go to bed and turn the machine off once he heard the distress call. If the message came in from the Titanic just seconds later, he wouldn’t have picked it up and the Carpathia would have been almost completely forgotten. I am so thankful the Carpathia has become known for it and I became devastated to hear that she was sunk in 1918 by German Uboat U55. I have had so much interest in the Carpathia in the previous years, I even bought myself a Historic Novel about the ship, written by Jay Ludowyke.

Hi Paul, another great and interesting vid. You might of visited this before, but if not, there is the grave of Jack Philips in the cemetery at Nightingale Road, Godalming Surrey. He is famous in the area as he was the wireless operator who sent out the SOS messages and went down with the Titanic, still at his post. He was born in Farncombe, where there is a plaque on the front of the shop that stands on the site where his families house stood. Also there is the Philips Memorial in Godalming behind St. Peter and St. Paul's town church in memory to him, hope this might be of interest to you.

As the Carpathia started to race towards the disaster scene Rostron being the pious man that he was raised his cap about 2in and started to pray. Then, before leaving the scene in the morning of the 15th he had everyone assembled for a brief service in memory of those lost and in thanksgiving for those saved. He said after the rescue that a hand other than his must have been on the helm that night
