Hi. I am a longtime subscriber and love your videos. My background is many years with Nikon digital equipment and 35mm prior to that, before switching over to a Sony NEX6 maybe 10 years ago. I loved its simplicity and we have made many trips and have many great memories in photos and videos using it with the kit lens and a Tamron 18-200 telephoto. I had played around some with the a6000 and a6300, but kept holding off with my local camera shop telling me a better replacement would be coming. I decided that was the a6500 and have put off buying one for various reasons, and then just when I was ready the rumors started and then now we have the a6400. Our camera uses anymore are with kids and grandkids and for travel and the occasional special moment here at home. I love technology (being an engineer and patent attorney) which is some of the reason I love your videos and approach to analyzing all of this stuff. But my question comes down to very simply, what to do and get now??? I see your My Gear list and am inclined to follow it exactly. But so far you are the only blogger I follow or respect who prefers the a6400 over the a6500. Also, while I probably don't need it, I have the funds to go up to a full-frame again but wonder if that would be a mistake if only because of size. Help if you can. And by the way, my Tamron telephoto is not as smooth as it used to be so I am looking for a replacement. You don't seem to use them much but it sounds like the Sony 18-105 would be your choice, is that correct? Thanks.

That indoor shot was surprisingly sharp on it! I just wish Sony would fix the rolling shutter issue already. On the first video, specially (I saw them in sequence), it's pretty much unusable footage. Handheld it is quite difficult to get a sharp image with it at 210mm focal lenth (with OSS enabled). Maybe its just me having super shaky hands. Gonna need a Mono- or Tripod...

good video man. I have a question: since the a6400 doesn't have IBIS, but relies on using lenses that have OSS stabilization, I'm wondering how sharp photos will turn out if I use lenses that don't have OSS? will the photos still be of good quality? is it good to use lenses without OSS on a6400? I wonder that because lenses with OSS are much more expensive. I hope for an answer.

When shooting astrophotography and using a tripod, you actually need to turn off all stabilization (both lens and in body). It seems counterintuitive but it is true! So a non OSS lens would not be improved with ibis turned on when shooting astrophotography (or any other time you are using a tripod...)

I think that, on the last video, I mentioned that IBIS (a6500) makes it possible for me to handhold a manual 90mm lens where no-stabilisation (a6500) required at least a steady elbow rest. Here is another advantage: the IBIS stabilisation makes manual focussing a lot easier. With the same lens, on the a6500 (ISBIS) I can even see detail at the higher focus magnification.

my main objective is actually to video my dog daily hopefully telling a story eventually say 1 month to 1 clip. I’m considering getting a a6400 instead of using a9 for video as the smaller setup would allow me to have more opportunities to bring the setup out since it is much lighter. What are some of your thoughts? I’m debating with getting a6500 - better AF and focus tracking vs IBiS. But since it should be a run and gun shoot, i thought still need a gimbal as both the 6400 and 6500 will still produce shaky footage. If it’s videoing from a stationary position. Having Power zoom lens like the 18-105mm should work? from your conclusion, it seems that there is no point for me to wait for the a6500 successor since i still need a gimbal?

I have a a6400 with the 18-135mm, f3.5-5.6 kit lens and mostly do photography and not video. I want to buy a prime lens for the better sharpness and smaller f number (better bokeh and low light performance). The choice is between Sigma 30mm f1.4 and Sony 35mm f1.8, the price being basically the same. Where the first seems to be sharper and better in low light but the second one has OSS. So do I understand it correctly that if I want to shoot handheld pictures during the day and also at lower light (say 10/11pm in a street), the Sony lens with OSS would be a better choice?

I think the processing speed influences on the sharpness with motion, because it's just like the vertical distortion in video mode when you turn your camera right or left caused by slow processing. So, if you use handheld camera, the a6400 will provide a faster processing than your hand's movement. On the other hand, with a slower processor like in a6500, the image processing won't be fast enough and it can lose more information. I don't know, but it makes sense to me.

Ahhhhh! I mentioned in the previous video that you didn't do the test with OSS in conjunction with IBIS. Now you have! THANK YOU! Just as I had surmised. In combination there should be an improvement. It's slight but a difference. Also, having IBIS for non stabilized lenses is a no brainer, especially in low light and telephoto situations. One other question? Do you have an overall image quality winner between the a6x00's? Has the sensor improved at all with each model, or are they really just the same?

Please do a video on the firmware update for the Sony A6000. I can't believe I haven't seen one? Also I do wonder of you can use of Sony update of different models? Its all about 1 and 0's, I cant believe a smart hacker hasn't opened the software to cameras and allow us to update any Sony camera

I just got an a6400. I would have liked to have ibis to allow me to buy some nice sigma non stabilized lenses. However, the price of the a6600 is too close to full frame cameras in my opinion and just too expensive for what you get. I can see me upgrading to full frame some time in the future and this a6400 will be enough for me to get back into the groove as its been a few years since my DSLR days. So far I'm super impressed with it, especially the auto focus!

don't know about you guys, but I can take crisp images at 1/10sec f/1.4 iso100 hand held with my a6000 / sigma 16mm. probably because of a small focal length..

What a pity you didn't compare OSS vs IBIS only (you compared OSS vs OSS+IBIS). That was exactly what I was looking for.

@@mikeydoes Thanks! I watched it. Unfortunately he used very fast shutter speeds, so you can't draw any real conclusions. Hopefully he'll upload another video with shutter speeds lower than the reciprocal rule.

so basically, the advantage A6500 have over the A6400 is in the video stabilization department. in the still photo , a6400 even slightly beat the a6500. if you take video a lot and using non native lenses like myself (sigma 16mm f1.4) go for a6500, otherwise, go for a6400 for sure.

Yes I think the same the a6500 it's better for video when you don't have stabilization in the lenses .

I prefer have 2 option use ibis with not stabilized lenses like sigma art or cheap lenses adapted I have and use native stabilized lenses (we know that the stabilization don't make miracles but It helps a lot )

IMO, stabilisation on aps-c generally not that great, comparatively to micro four thirds Panasonic or Olympus 5-axis in body

To be honest I am disappointed from the ibis, was the only reason why I switched to the a6500. The Sony Ibis is not that great and it’s not worth it as a important reason to change. Thanks for your effort and time.
