The *absence* of infrared light, which stimulates the mitochondria in the back of the eye, is the problem. We evolved with the principle that visible light in nature always comes with infrared light. However, modern LED lights are specifically engineered to not produce infrared light because we don't see it and have classified it as waste. This isn't entirely wrong, but we need to consider how much infrared light we are exposed to in a day. If we stay indoors with even infrared light-blocking windows to prevent heat, we miss out on this exposure. Check out studies on photobiomodulation, especially for eyes.

To achieve photobiomodulation it takes a lot more than just having infrared light...

I am 48 years old and after 30 years of being prescribed pharmaceuticals that never worked even once, I realized that the worst thing I can do is continue to take pharmaceuticals in an attempt to fix various health ailments. No matter what you do, seek alternative treatments because at least you have a chance of getting better when you go outside the medical establishment.

My mom is turning 78 and has no single sign of AMD, although she smoked 2 packs of cigarettes daily for 50 years, has diabetes, cholesterol and hypertension, and been exposed to artificial light all day long for 40 years, working in a kitchen. While my dad was always outdoors, didn't smoke, had a very low BMI and was health conscious, and he got AMD from his early 70s. The main difference was that he suffered from insomia his entire life, barely slept more than 5 hours per night.

Even race matters, If they're East Asian, then they have better eye genetics compared to other races

I wonder if that outdoor light study factored in whether the participants wore sunglasses when outdoors during the day. According to the Cleveland Clinic, sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays protect against macular degeneration. I don't like wearing sunglasses, but I wear them for this reason, whether it's sunny or cloudy outside.

I wonder what it is about outdoor artificial light in specific? Are we talking car lights, or street lights? And why are they different than the artificial lights we use indoors?

Artificial lighting in most cases would not cause WMD in my opinion, because my 96 year grandmother has it. She was an alcoholic, she smoked at a younger age, diabetic, and now considered obese due to way too much sugar intake by eating chocolates and other candy besides deserts. Another factor that researchers did not take in consideration is incandescent light bulbs before LEDs took over. The filaments in light bulbs produce ultra violet spectrum of light that is harmful to our eye's and older people were more exposed to these ultra violet spectrum. Even though the milky white coating on the glass is supposed to block the violet spectrum, how do we know it really works. I've seen experiments on these light bulbs on the before and after effects with bulbs with the protective coating and clear glass. The clear glass did release more ultra violet light compared to the protective coating. The protective coating did block more violet light, but not all of it. Very little violet light was still being released. Whether this violet light contributed to WMD, who knows, but the researchers should have included this factor.

Incandescent lights produce massive amounts of infrared light and very little UV. Florescent bulbs with defective coating can have UV output.
