Thank you for powering through for a build video while sick. A simple build with instrumental music is nice and relaxing and still inspiring. Hope you feel better soon.

I think this might be my favorite of your videos. The small nature of the build makes the little details and simple joys of a little bit of wood looking like tiny planks so good.
@pietrayday991511 күн бұрын
It reminds me a lot of the 1980s when RAFM (i believe) used to make pewter Call of Cthulhu miniatures, and most of the monsters would come with tiny bits of terrain, usually a little knee-high artifacts, relics, shrine, idol, or altar of some sort, unadvertised on the packaging, and included without explanation. Those little tiny-sized bits of terrain were always super-fun to paint up, quite eerie and atmospheric, flexible to work with for all sorts of little terrain and gaming ideas, and nice and simple for a quick evening or two of something a little different to paint from monsters, cultists, and heroes. I think these little terrain bits always ended up being used in gaming more often than the monsters, come to think of it! I kind of wish more miniature manufacturers included little bits of random terrain like that. Come to think of it, those RAFM Call of Cthulhu terrain bits would fit right in with this Trench Crusade terrain, too. - just the right sort of thing to put in a little shrine or other small terrain piece, and usually the sort of thing that wouldn't be hard to make "from scratch" in most cases, either: a skull and bones mounted on a stake, a little rune-carved stone slab or pillar, that sort of thing: sort of like the shell in this video, but more primitive and weird. For scratch-building this sort of thing, a little scrap foam or left-over bits of wooden dowels or stir-sticks or skewers, bits of cut-up skeleton minis, scrap from 3D print supports or "happy accidents" from failed 3D printing, unused bitz from multi-part mini kits (which always seem to include more heads than anyone ever actually needs, plus lots and lots of shields and weapons, such as nice, spiky spears or lances), broken toys, unusable/unloved minis from your reject bin, and that sort of thing could go a long, long way toward becoming the centerpieces of little quick-subject terrain bits of this sort! Scale modeling back in the '80s also supplied modelers with great little "battlefield accessory" kits that usually included things like sandbag walls, barrels, oil drums, fuel cans, ammo boxes, machine guns on tripods, tank obstacles, little guard shacks and barricades, road signs, telegraph poles, and that sort of thing - any of which could also provide centerpieces or supporting material for quick little terrain builds like this video's shrine. These days, plastic "dungeon dressing" of this sort are even easier to find! (What do you get when you start with a barrel, one of those crucifixes from the video, and an extra skull from a 28mm wargame skeleton army kit? The start of a low-effort, high-impact bit of atmospheric battlefield/dungeon terrain that can probably finished in an afternoon while watching KZbin or binge-watching your favorite show.....)

At first I was like what is he doing, then I was like oooohhh, that's different and I like it. Definitely some of the natural feeling to it, and not like we are watching some big box production, but a simple reminder that you are human and almost like our distant youtube screen buddy.

You applying glue to the base and just straight up scooping it into the box of stones/grit hit the "Why didn't I think of that?!" part of my brain! Absolutely keeping a mental note of that for next time I'm working on mini bases
@pietrayday991511 күн бұрын
Apparently it's an old wargame mini basing trick going back a long way, but I somehow missed it for decades, too. Maybe you already know or thought of some of the following tricks, but just in case, I came across them relatively recently, and thought I'd share: These days, I've been saving all the little scraps left over from tripping flash and clipping sprue and other little bits and scraps from my minis and scratch-build projects for this sort of purpose, along with bits of cut-up sprue, cut-up Evergreen styrene plastic railroad modeling rods (like I-beams, tube "pipes", and plank-like strips) and so on, which can be mixed up with pretty much anything to be used as basin rubble. Chop up bits of the plastic from "bubble packaging" that lots of stuff is sold in for broken bits of machinery or vehicles, and ruined building materials, too. Rectangular sprue can be chopped into loose bricks or into broken 2x4 boards or other ruined framing material, while round sprues can be chopped into lengths of pipe or into poles - a box of wargaming minis usually yields plenty of sprue and trimmed bits of "rubble" to work with! I've seen modelers using cheap counter-top electric blenders or coffee grinders to chop up these sorts of bits with and/or add a little weathering, used carefully in small bursts until the desired effect is achieved, it seems to work great. Another trick is to buy a hard-plastic, multi-part, 28mm wargaming skeleton army boxed kit - usually these kits (such as the one made by Wargames Atlantic) include enough bits for a couple-dozen skeletons with shields and weapons and probably some helmets too, at under US $2 a skeleton, plus a fist-full of left over optional arms and skulls. These skeleton bits and their gear can be cut up into individual bones and mixed into your basing material and rubble for a little extra "grim-dark" battlefield atmosphere, and a box of them will go a long, long way for this purpose.

I also like that with a swap of what you put in place of the artillery shell, it can fit in all sorts of games. A public data terminal from before the corporate wars, a small font of water for travelers to wash their hands on a pilgrimage, a roadside shrine visited after a party successfully defeats the monster in the mountains...

Unrelated to this specific video, but I just wanted to mention that I got the project you made in the Sewer Rat Diorama video off of your site a bit ago and am loving it! :) That video was one of the biggest factors/inspiration that got me to start 3D printing minis a few years back and it's super cool to be able to see the little diorama in person. Great stuff. Strep throat is the worst. Here in the UK, we've had several flu type things on the go. Get one, get 'better' and immediately go down with another. Not fun at all, and a guarantee of a ruined Christmas. Love that shrine, though - it made me think of 'Beneath The Planet Of The Apes', where a thermonuclear device is worshipped. Those figures you show at the end are very reminiscent of the holy troops used by Torquemada in Mills & O'Neill's simply mind-blowing comic strip 'Nemesis The Warlock'. Torquemada's credo is: "Be Pure! Be Vigilant! Behave!"
