I would use their preset as the starting point and modify. Absolute black works really well in PMU compared to PME. :) Give it a try!

Like PME it does this automatically. As far as windows color management goes, just set the profile in windows and you are good to go.

Thanks for the rundown. Super excited to see that switching the display profile on the puck is now also altering the ICC profile on my machine. Any input on why they would put the softproofing preset at 160 cd/m^2? Seems to fly in the face of the common reference of around 80 (note, test prints not yet done).

Again starting point for individual user customization. Also reference for print is a bit higher usually at 100-120 nits. But calibrating for proof at D50 our perception of color and brightness changes drastically at that white point, 160 is a suitable starting point, especially when considering that proper print viewing is done with a well illuminated viewing booth.

I know digital techs in the photo industry often have various settings - indoor vs outdoors for brightness (ie. 160 indoors, max brightness outdoors). For similar use cases, would you suggest calibrating at both points and just switching between them?

Hello Art, it's me again Thanks to your help, I purchased the i1Display Pro and installed Palette Master Ultimate on my Windows computer. I'm currently using the BenQ SW271C and SW270C monitors. I am using SW271 as my primary monitor for editing work station and the SW270C as a secondary monitor for monitoring ongoing editing in full-screen. Can I ask how to best perform calibration in my current situation? In your video, I saw a 'Measurement (other monitor)' option in the Luminance category. Would it be better to calibrate the SW271C monitor first and then use 'Measurement (other monitor)' on the SW270C? I'm always so grateful!

You can give that feature a try. Or if you want to keep things simple right now, you can just choose to calibrate them individually as well. I'm working on that video and will have something soon. :)

Eizo always updates one ICC profile under the same name - for each calibration target. BenQ names each profile differently depending on the date. This leads to having to manually assign a profile, manually delete it, and can lead to mistakes - on a Mac. According to the video, even in the new version, the names keep changing...

But you have the option to name the ICC profile whatever you choose so should be able to save as the same name as the previous calibration if that's what you want. One would assume the reason the default name includes the current date is for that exact reason, so you always know the date that calibration was run on. You don't have to use this naming convention if you don't want to: choose whatever name you prefer.

What @izonozi said and Eizo does that too because many of their high end model have in screen calibration. You need that because if the icc profile name change, calibration system and accuracy as a whole would fail. It is not a feature as much as a common denominator work around for precipitate from the high end device down to the mid-tier one.

Hi Art, Thanks for the video, PMU looks awesome but I'll have to wait as I'm using a Spyder5Pro which isn't compatible. Two questions if I may: Can you install PMU over the top of PME or should you completely uninstall Element first? You mention in your other replies that the spyder5 has a bad sensor, so in that case (because I can't afford to upgrade to the Calibrite Colorchecker atm) am I better off still calibrating with the spyder or just using the factory default on my SW270C?

They are 2 separate software and can both be on the system, just that only one can run at any given time. Not a bad sensor but quality wise it is not as good when compared to the alternatives in the market place. For now I would just use PME and Spyder 5 to calibrate your SW270C

I like that it goes straight into the validation for you and the dialogs are probably better than before. But my main issue is that the grayscale calibration has a bad kink in it right at about level 153 or so. My black and white images show it clearly. It's a faint red shift. In other areas, like deep shadows, it goes toward the green. Put up a continuous gray scale wedge and it's pretty obviously not a neutral scale. Maybe they just made sure the 12 points in their validation report were spot on.

@@ArtIsRight I typically use 5600K, and either 100 cd or 70 cd, and either panel native or sRGB. If it's sRGB, then I use sRGB gamma. If it's panel native, I use gamma 2.2. Blsck point is 0.3. Ive fiddled around a lot and never gotten rid of it but I can see it change some, so I think the hardware is capable, but the way the software builds the calibration prevents it. Like the matrix or curve fitting, interpolation, etc is not right. It's almost like they used to high polynomial curve fit because the result is so bumpy. Again, it's not a horrible unusable result, but it's pretty clear on a nice b&w image that there's reds and some greens in it. Computer is windows 10 or 11 Update: With the new Ultimate program, the old problem is mostly gone, but now I can't get rid of green shadows

@@ArtIsRight it's an i1Pro and a sw270c. I've had some improvements. Pallette master isn't as good as i1profiler still. It crashed when I used a custom white point from my other monitor. I think pallete master doesn't do as well with the 70cd I was using or the 5600k. This could be an issue because of the older i1Pro, but i1profiler was able to handle it just fine. In my latest attempts, I've used 80cd and 6000K and it did better. Raising the black point a little off of absolute zero might be helping. My worst results were with absolute zero. I'm not really satisfied with the results of their algorithms but it's usable. They should be going lower than a gray level of 40, I'd like to see a 16. I just read here that v4 is better. Why is that? I've been using v2.

2 separate software can both reside on the system. As far as sRGB or Adobe RGB it would depend on the workflow. Brightness again based on your environment, difficult to say. And yes there's panel native in edit settings!

It is not in the presets, you have to from the monitor setting page click on edit target and in the drop down list fir gamut, choose native there.

Does it matter what brightness my monitor is set to? A SW321C, I usually (using the puck dial) set it to about 65 in my fairly light room, and about 30-35 later in the day when it's dimmer. Surely this must affect the calibration. What should it be at? Cannot find info anywhere. Thanks.

Yes and you are currently using one of the factory calibrated mode which is ok. But for the most part, the luminance should be fixed> What you can do is calibrate slot 1 to a lower nit and slot 2 to a brighter nit and with Palette Master Ultimate icc sync kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZeUn5SDiZqCm9k it will automatically change the profile for you.

I downloaded the program and then saw my spyder 5 elite isn't in the list of supported hardware. With PME I got avr delta of .75 and max delta of 1.77. I have to think twice about getting the colorimeter you suggest considering the cost. I'd like the feature of syncing with the win OS when changing calibrations on the hot puck but it isn't hard to switch default icc defaults in windows. How much bettter than the avr delta of .75 could I really get?

∆e is one variable that is easy to compare and assess but not necessary the end all be all. For now if you don't want to get a new calibrator just stick with PME. PMU uses a new algorithm and overall it does a much better job calibrating the display. As far as Spyder 5 for so many engineering and technical reason, the sensor inside spyders in general is not good, especially in dark and black tones. If you are ok with what you have, stick with it. When you are ready for a move consider Calibrite devices instead and with that you can use PMU with it too.

Hi Art, great tutorial! I have a query. I got a passed calibration in PMU with an SW321C and SpyderX but the screen is now pretty dark. It's a very noticeable drop in brightness to the adobergb and srgb settings already in the screen menu. Because of this, I went into MacOS display settings out of curiosity to see if the ICC profile just created was in there and I clicked on one out of curiosity. I then clicked on a few. If I now go back to my calibration 1 hardware calibration bin the screen, it differs depending on what colour profile I have in the MacOS display settings. Should the profile have been created here? Wondering if there is there a way I can lock the MacOS display settings from affecting the new hardware calibration? Sorry for the waffle! Cheers

You can't lock that just have to use the correct one, PMU generated profiles are usually at the bottom of the list with the name of the display SW321C_Cal..... choose that one.

It really is a lot darker and coming from a Macbook pro XDR display I guess it's going to take time to get used to it. And if you try to print at XDR full brightness your images will be dark 10/10 times. There's viewing luminance and printing luminance. Would a higher luminance setting still achieve a calibration as good as normal luminance if say I wanted to run it higher than 120? Yes you are always validating at the luminance that you calibrate.

No, just make sure that it is the bigger color spectrophotometer one. There are numerous color munki, display being one of the model, that one is shaped like the i1Display Pro device, just different color and that device will not work. It has to be ColorMunki Photo

Hi Art, when starting a calibration with PMU my Windows 10 PC locked up and my SW321C screen displayed black for the entire screen. I was using the Eye1 Pro (mark 1) device, so this might be the cause of the failure. I selected the Eye1 Pro 2 as the device which PMU appeared to accept successfully. Do you think the Eye1 Pro is the the problem or are there other things I should be checking. I am able to use the latest version of PME with the Eye1 Pro without problems and with good results.

This is interesting. I'll report this to BenQ. i1Pro is a really old device and I don't even have one in the studio to test out. Either way, if you sign into PMU, create an account. On the Home Screen there an "I" in the circle on the bottom left, click on that, choose account and then choose Export Log ID, this will send an error log directly to BenQ. Once you click on it, a dialog will pop up with the Log ID number, if you email or dm this to me I can send it BenQ for further investigation.

I've just bought an SW271C, I can connect to the hub via the USB cable, I can view the screen via DisplayPort, HDMI and USB-C, however I cannot get the Palette Master Ultimate software (Windows) to recognise the SW271C. Any thoughts? Having only the USB hub and USB-C connected, no connection with the software.

@@ArtIsRight Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I thought I made it clear. I have connected USB-C to USB-C, AND the USB-A to USB B (hub) cable. Then started the software. No connection. These are the Benq cables. Both cables work, the USB-C for display, the USB-A to B for monitor hub connectivity as I checked I could read from the USB and SD card slot. But, the software doesn't see it.

An update on the situation for anyone reading this comment in the future. The issue has been resolved after some trouble shooting and diagnostics. Cause is unknown, Display port was clean and reseated. And PME along with i1Profilier were removed from the PC. Based on the feed back that I have seen so far this is an isolate incident. And in short everything is good with PMU!

Using PME = got Ave delta E 1.05 Max delta E 2.37 Using PMU = got Ave delta E6.95 Max delta E 16.5 Same monitor, same Colorchecker display pro using mainly defaults, just changed luminence to 100. It is not which is correct, it is that one just fails validation. The question is why? It would be great to get a log. If you sign into PMU, create an account. On the Home Screen there an "I" in the circle on the bottom left, click on that, choose account and then choose Export Log ID, this will send an error log directly to BenQ. Once you click on it, a dialog will pop up with the Log ID number, if you email or dm this to me I can send it BenQ for further investigation. Otherwise you can find the log file at C:\\Users\(User Account)\AppData\Local\BENQ\PaletteMasterUltimate\log either email me the ID or log and we can investigate further.

In addition to this what display Cale are you using and what video card? If Nvidia or AMD are you using their pro driver - Nvidia would be Studio Driver and AMD would be Fire Pro driver. If not please try that first. Also please send me the validation report as well this way we can see where the validation fails.

First, I am asked for my email. I put in my yahoo email address. Then I am asked for my password. Is this my yahoo password? If yes, why would I need to give this information? I feel very nervous about giving my yahoo password to BenQ. But before that, I had to pick either google or apple. So this makes me wonder if I should be putting a google email and password in. dm or email me. Something is going on with your system that is interfering with this. Is this a desktop or laptop, if desktop, are you using a separate GPU, if so are you using nVidia Studio driver for nVidia card or AMD pro driver for AMD card. Game driver will not work well.

Interesting looking software. However when I loaded PMU and tried to run it, the ICC profile won’t generate. I get a warning message telling me the ICC profile set failed. Doesn’t seem to matter what settings I try.

This is interesting. I'll report this to BenQ. If you sign into PMU, create an account. On the Home Screen there an "I" in the circle on the bottom left, click on that, choose account and then choose Export Log ID, this will send an error log directly to BenQ. Once you click on it, a dialog will pop up with the Log ID number, if you email or dm this to me I can send it BenQ for further investigation.

So, after playing around with the software, I finally found the source of the issue. I use a laptop, and my SW270C is the second screen. When the SW270C is on and plugged in (usb-c), the laptop was set to display second screen only. This was fine for PME, but apparently not for PMU. For the new software to work, the display has to be set to extend. After I switched the screen display to extend, the software worked fine.

Art, like I said before, you get better deta E because the calibrating device is not moving. For years, Xrite software forced the user to remove the device from the display and put it back in for the validation. Check it with the Calibrite software and ignore the instruction to remove the device after completed calibration, do not touch it and go to the validation process. My deltaE max is 1.2 in such case. Move the device and you get much worse results on validation

It’s really frustrating that when I assign number one on my puck during the calibration process, it doesn’t actually work. If I want to switch to SRGB and push number two, then I push number one again. It goes to BenQ’s default profile not my calibrated profile thank you Support says this is normal behavior, which seems kind of silly to even, use the puck when calibrating

Let me clarify, when calibration you are not assigning the calibration slot or number to the puck, far from it, you are choosing the hardware calibration slot to store the 3D LUT in, that is simply what is happening. Not quite, everything shifts over time. Calibration can be done once sure, but the longer you wait till next calibration the more things have slightly shift. These changes occur so slowly, our eyes cannot see or detect the changes from day to day and even over time because we are "used" to it but that is a bad road to go down.

This means that you should recalibrate your display every so often. The interval is up to you. But it is recommended that you do it at least every 4 weeks. It is not just one and done.

Yes that is because PMU lock the display, to reset this you have to pull the power cord out. As far as why it freezes, there are so many variables. I would reach out to your local BenQ support for help on this. Or if you want my help, you can dm me

If you are using HDMI, change to display port, make sure that you are running pro driver and not game driver, Nvidia studio driver or Fire Pro for Radeon

I just got a new SW240 monitor. However, when i installed BenQ's palette master ultimate, it could not detect the monitor no matter what I did. I am connecting it with a USB-C to displayport, together with the USB to USB upstream cable to my lenovo legion laptop but it still does not detect it in the software. I discovered the problem from watching your other videos regarding PMU. I slowly pieced together what was the issue after seeing the steps you took. I had to delete the driver that I got from palette master ultimate file and install the drivers under SW240 monitor section on the website. Once I tried it again with my USB-C display port + the uplink cable, it finally worked. Thank you so much for your help. Your videos and advice are way better than the customer service of benQ. I really appreciate it 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻. I can finally use my monitor without frustration.

I just spent two hours texting with a fabulous BenQ source because I couldn’t calibrate my BenQ SW321C at all. The ultimate and the essential could not see my monitor. so after lots of trying of different things, I now need to buy a DPI to DPI cord AND a USB A to USB B cord to work with my custom built desktop. I am crossing my fingers that this will work. Right now I am using HDMI to just utilize my monitor but nothing is working to help me calibrate. I have only Thunderbolt C and DPI connections in my Graphics processor and the regular connections in my hard drive. Has anyone else had this problem? I can’t be the only one and I am still not sure that buying these new cords will work. It just seems strange. this was a custom built computer but with all the usual basic stuff. Just wondering if anyone else had this problem.

Paletter Master Ultimate like Palette Master Element only works with SW series, anything else you have to use the OEM software. This provide will not help any other display. It is Display specific.

I was going to purchase a BenQ monitor; however, I will not due to the fact that I would have to create an account to continue to use the calibration after 30 days. It's the same reason I use Adobe Lightroom Classic as opposed to CC. I want full control over my content. I do not want to be a hostage to a company to use their products. It's well explained, but unfortunately Benq is seriously wrong with the colors or its color profiles compared to an Eizo, so I'll give my BenQ back. Everything I tried, especially in Srgb, is totally wrong

I don't wanna keep my hopes up high, but if it works with SW2700PT FW3 MFG 2020/01 then i want to know more about it and how to use it on Windows 10/11. SW270C is supposed to be 100% sRGB, 97% P3, 99% Adobe RGB with Delta E below 2 and you got 3.43. Good god. And it's not a 10 bit. I'm shock Batman

That is factory spec, fully and acutely aware. ∆e below 2 is achieved from factory and in this calibration as well. As an educational point, when talking about display ∆e, the industry at large is referring to average ∆e, which in this calibration passes just fine at below 1, which is amazing. Max ∆e is for 1 color patch only and it is to highlight - more so to make aware that said color might show some slight variation. I see where you are pointing to and coming from but that is not the correct set of information that you have. And if you are looking for a true 10-bit, sure, go find one in the Eizo top end that costs 2-3 times as much. There are more to display bit depth than just spec, each to their own

Are people seriously going along with this agenda. So The international colour consortium creates generic profiles that are not specific. Why would I want this.
