Mr. Phelan, what an incredible composer, I really feel outside of the Amiga he doesn't get recognized as much for the fantastic work he has done, and a brilliant feature here seeing Patrick humbly start out being inspired by C64 composers to creating his synth collection and eventually landing the chance to compose music for games, and he's been so vastly under-appreciated so its great hearing this Mix! Really can't go wrong with landing Zool as your first work, and it truly set the stage for him, and Zool was among the first Amiga OST's I listened to along with Lotus 3, and naturally I made sure to hear all of his Amiga catalog, and it's all so good! Absolutely love the pitch shift transition into Lotus 3, that just feels so damn good in my soul, as usual your transitions are impeccable! Lotus 3 probably remains my favorite Patrick has done, all the tracks are just bangers. Love all soundtracks ports he did for Zool, Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing and Top Gear 2 is another favorite, he truly made those games memorable with his outstanding composing! And nice he got some output for the CD32, a shame the failure of that console means not a lot of people have heard the music from it, there are a lot of underrated OST's on it! And hey nice to hear one of his DOS's soundtracks here, I love the heck out of that MIDI sound, and great to hear one of his contributions from Loaded, there is something so special about that era of PS1 and Redbook audio, was a magical time for that shift happening. And even as another Feature here shows the transition of Patrick going to more of Audio Director/Manager, its nice to see him be active every so often on Soundcloud, glad to see another composer not forget there roots. Great job on another awesome Artist Feature, Patrick Phelan definitely deserves more praise and recognition, as do you anosci, thanks for putting together this superb Mix for another talented composer! :)

Patrick Phelan was (is) a god to me when I was a child. I'd get games that he made the music for just off his name alone.

Argh, damnit! Spent around 10 minutes of my life searching for the exact mix with the track which I thought sounded exactly like Auckland and the track in question ended up to be... Auckland... from YM House mix. Another great mix by the way!

I had the same issue when I was writing it, haha I had to bring in the SNES version of the track because my mind kept wanting to transition to The Ottifants

Pity that the mix could not include Soulbringer and I understand why. But that music fits the game like a glove. It conveys the same cold claustrophobic athmosphere that the visuals and voices have.
@GSTChannelVEVO3 жыл бұрын
It's also unfortunate because Soulbringer really showcases the growth in Pat's craft, as far as orchestral works. Alas...it didn't make the cut.

4:44 YES! YES! YES! The exclusive Tool World music! And because Pat plays a music supervision role at Sumo Academy, it was added to Toll World in the re-release for Redimensioned, and is now considered part of the definitive soundtrack for Zool 1. Absolutely one of the sleeper hits of Pat's Zool compositions, I absolutely love this tune. My nerdy 90s gamer brain has been calling it that since my teens, and it's a delight seeing people showcase it. (and then just segueing into Mount Ices, that was just cheeky, but VERY well done)

I would assume in Pat's early years, he took inspiration from Barry Leitch given BOTH of them worked at Gremlin. Awesome mix.

While possible, it wasn't direct. I reached out to Barry and apparently Pat took over just as he left Gremlin. The two never met.

4:20 Why does the SNES blow on a pitch pipe before generating the music? Was that originally in the song or do you add that in for the transition?
@GSTChannelVEVO Жыл бұрын
I'm not 100% sure what you're referring to, but if it's the 2 notes that play during the snare hits before switching to the SNES, that's part of the Genesis version.

have you mono-fied the amiga stuff? i seem to remember it was only capable of hard panning annoyingly
@GSTChannelVEVO3 жыл бұрын
yeah I tend to mono-ify amiga tunes because the hard panning is almost always too much. it's not uncommon to see composers say "pls listen in mono", so I think it has precedent.
