I just did 5 months in my county jail and before I left every inmate was issued a tablet. We were allowed to have them from 8am - 10:30 pm. Now of course they had games you could buy (which I never got since I was leaving soon and didn’t wanna blow my canteen money) but before I left a game that got big between inmates was a sort of old school dungeon crawler game which looked pretty fun honestly. And what you were asking wondering if a device like that would be good entertainment for inmates, by god yes! Other than reading my life kinda revolved around listening to the radio or podcasts on my tablet. So a little device you were showing in your video would mean the world.

Drives me nuts when people expect inmates to just stare at the walls all day. They honestly think that makes for a safe environment for staff and inmates? I'm glad we have shit like this. As a former correctional officer I seen a lot of the devices you have shown. Except for the typewriter. Inmates also would get hot pots to boil water for ramens and rice. Once they have damaged the hot pot they would remove the heating element and turn their metal shelving into a flat iron grill. They scraped off the paint and attached the element beneath the top shelf and plug it in. Surprisingly it worked very well. Some officers would confiscate these items since they were modified. But, I didn’t sweat the little things that didn’t harm anyone. Now if they start grilling the faces of fellow inmates that may be a concern.

In 2005 here in Maryland, prisons took most of our “street clothes” (clothes with name brands and certain colors) but then they allowed us to get Gameboys and at first Nintendo DS handhelds (but they stopped that due to being able to message other DS consoles nearby but the people who already had them, were allowed to keep them). We also got cable. People wonder why we were allowed to get stuff like that since we were supposed to be in there being punished but it’s a way to pacify prisoners. Having a tv, handheld gaming system, cable, and things like that, kept more prisoners in their cells for long periods of time which made it easier on the small amount of guards to keep violence down and less prisoners to deal with.
@0neDoomedSpaceMarine10 ай бұрын
True, prisoners are supposed to be punished, but Cruel & Unusual Punishment is very much a thing, and human beings tend to suffer horribly if we don't have SOME form of recreation (solitary confinement is an extreme example, in how there's close to NOTHING for the brain to engage with, and that really gets to you). Not everyone behind bars is equally bad either, while one guy could be in for murder, another could be in for insurance fraud or tax evasion.
@idontwantahandlethough10 ай бұрын
@@0neDoomedSpaceMarine I agree, except for the part about how they're "supposed to be punished". The point of prison is not punishment.. or at least that's not the right way to think about it. Prison is a *_consequence_* much more than a punishment. I mean obviously their is a punishment component in there, but the goal is not, should not, and _cannot_ be punishment. The goal should be to separate people who can't live in society until they are capable of doing so [without harming other people]. By thinking about prison as a punishment, we make it significantly less likely that prisoners are capable of coming out the other side as intact, functional human beings. In my opinion, we should make prison as comfortable as possible. Because let's be real: even if they had the most absurdly luxurious shit like a chocolate fountain and the newest gaming consoles and gourmet chefs.. it would still be prison. They still can't leave. They still can't see their loved ones. They're still going to feel that degradation of not being able to make your own choices. The vast majority of them are still going to feel shame for what they did. They're still stuck in the same building for YEARS ON END. There is no scenario where people are like "oh wow, prison sounds pretty dope! I'm going to commit a crime because I'd rather be in prison than get a job!".The only people who ever do shit like that are people that have lives so awful that prison seems like a positive alternative (such as a homeless man in winter who is in danger of freezing to death outside). I guess all I'm trying to say is that it should be about separation and rehabilitation, not punishment.
@0neDoomedSpaceMarine10 ай бұрын
@@idontwantahandlethough Rehabilitation is good, but there still needs to be an element of punishment to function as a deterrent, ergo as a serious consequence. Some people will still do crimes with harsh punishments, but if a punishment is harsh then fewer people will figure it worth the risk.

Prison-related rather than game-related, but I've got a friend who writes trashy romance for a living. Her publisher asked her to knock together a trilogy of gay-vampire-romance novels around when Twilight was popular, and her first book was enjoyed by a gentleman in the Ohio penal system. The prison wouldn't let him get the second book in the series, since they deemed it vulgar, so he took it to the state supreme court. He got his book, and she can now market her trashy romance as "protected free speech in Ohio".

Quite frankly, I feel all prisoners should be able to have access to game devices and things like table top rpgs. Those things can help reduce violence within the prison system and actually break down divisions amongst inmates. Also, they can help better each inmate and better rehabilitate them, especially if they play games that demand cooperation, where they're forced to work together. Instead of using them as legal slaves, do that as well as implement work programs to help prepare them for when they get out.

@@KeepItGoinBeats Actually, there's plenty of reasons/crimes you can go to prison for that are non-violent, meaning a person can decide and act to go to prison without hurting anyone. Not only that but there are plenty of homeless people who either commit crimes or violate their probation just to go to jail for either food and shelter, and/or medical treatment. Minimum and medium security prisons are not that bad, when I was locked up the one thing I did enjoy was the almost vacation feel there was to my cell. If I could have a PS or Xbox in my cell I would seriously think about getting locked up just so I can play undisturbed for some time. Point is, I don't think it's "completely unrealistic" for someone to just want to get away and be locked in a room with all the time to play games even if they get a couple misdemeanors on their record. If they know the system the can go for charges that they can later get expunged.

There are clear Playstation 3 and Xbox consoles out there for prisons, I've seen them. They are sold to inmates by a third party who takes the original consoles, puts all the guts in a clear case, disables with wifi and uploads a stable OS and firmware update. The inmates then buy physical copies of prison approved games from a catalog. I don't know the name of the company that sold them but I know they were significantly more expensive than the off the shelf consoles due to the cost of the modifications and the markup added by the prison.
@williamthompson14552 жыл бұрын
Don't really think this is true. Do you have any links? Normally stuff like this not only van inmates buy them. But families and buy them as well for inmates. And everything I find the photos show nonclear consoles. So bascially ones you buy from the store. They just don't get to keep them all day everyday. Only on certain times. Plus no need to disable wifi since there are passwords and you must be supervised in a holding area. But that's just what I could find. There are tons of sources. But I can't find one about clear consoles. Or even being able to keep it in your cell. So there wouldn't be a point in making it clear anyways.

@idontwantahandlethough10 ай бұрын
This is such a weird attitude. First of all.. ideally, no, prison is not for punishment. We obviously don't live in an ideal world, but what you're saying is both counterproductive and nonsensical. Prison is a consequence for doing things that harm others in society. Prison exists to keep people safe [by confining those that make them unsafe], and to *_rehabilitate_* the people who end up there. The goal is to mold them into upstanding members of society. If we desire to do that, it is crucial that we make sure that they are treated humanely while in prison. There is quite literally zero benefit to making [American] prisons more grotesque than they already are. Treating inmates like animals doesn't make them _less_ likely to do bad things in the future, it makes them *_MORE LIKELY._* This is not surprising: when you treat someone like an animal for long enough, eventually they start to believe that they are one. The "punishment" is going to prison. Even the best prison still sucks. You can't leave. You can't see your friends or family. It's super degrading. It's dangerous. The food sucks. There's nothing to do. If we give them video games, it's not somehow going to make prison not suck. It's not going to make some guy go "Golly gee willickers, these games suck! That's the last straw, I'm never doing crime again 😤!!", and I'm sure you know that. That's not how human beings work. It might not *_feel_* as good to some, but the reality is that we need to treat prisoners a lot better than we currently do if we want them to have any chance at re-entering society (and imo we should want that, because the alternative is a gigantic problem for everyone) Prison can be two things, depending on one's mindset. We can go with the "enlightened" mindset (lol I hate that word so much, but whatever), where prison is a necessary thing where we send people who are dangerous to society, in hopes that someday they will cease to be a danger and can be reintegrated into the real world.. Or.. we can go with the oldschool mindset, where prison is a place where we send people to be tortured, and then derive some sort of sick pleasure from their suffering. I can understand the emotional desire to want to see bad people pay for their crimes, but it's pretty clear that's a desire we should not be succumbing to. ---------- TL;DR - being locked up IS the punishment. We don't need to be purposefully withholding things, especially in situations like this where better games would cost the same [or less] than the cheap shit. There's no purpose there other than to deliberately make someone's life slightly worse, for the sake of making their life slightly worse. We can do that, but in the long run that only serves to hurt everyone. If we want a brighter future, we stop deciding on the easy, emotional choice. We must make the difficult, less fun decision to raise each other up. "A rising tide lifts all boats"

If I was stuck in prison with this thing I'd just ask to be given the chair. On the other hand, I could easily survive a lifetime in solitary with a Rasberry Pi.

I could survive in a Manhattan closet apartment with a Pi!

You say that, but I think having something like this, even with this extremely shity games would be like gold. Honestly I feel like this thing will feel like a Nintendo DS or Raspberry Pi like you said

How about the fact if you didn’t screw up to begin with you would not be in jail?😂 Sorry guys but I don’t think a criminal but that is being punished should be playing video games maybe read a book rehabilitate his self. I never heard of rewarding someone for being bad kind of defeats the purpose.

For a prison game console, I find it funny that the second game listed is “Busy Bong”

Omg these shovel ware games were on the plug and play controller for our car tv when I was a kid!!! These shovel ware games are so nostalgic to me because I remember all of them. Such bad games but were great for long car rides to keep me busy.

Wow, unlocking some memories I forgot I had here. Knew that console looked familiar, had the regular version of it when I was kid and remember quite a few of these games

Saying it's prison issued makes me think it's like right after you get sentenced they're like "okay here's your orange jumpsuit and handheld game console"
