First off, thanks for reacting to these guys! Gang of Youths is my favorite band of all time and criminally underrated outside of Australia so I always appreciate someone who gives them a chance. This is one of their most popular songs, especially in a live show, and definitely shows of two staples of GOYm driving beats and incredible lyricism. Highly recommend exploring them more because although you are right in saying this a pretty standard alt sound, it doesn’t begin to show their range. Their first and second albums (the positions and Go Farther in Lightness) are definitely more alt rock sounding but their newest album (angel in realtime) has a huge range of song types (rock, disco, pop, hymnal) that have heavy Polynesian influences which is Dave’s heritage. If you want to see more range, my personal recommendation is Still Unbeaten Life (MTV Unplugged) but you can’t go wrong with anything of theirs. Others would be The Man Himself, Magnolia, Brothers, or their cover of Blood for Like a Version.
