It's recommended when painting fabric no matter the paint you used to heat set it, and not was it immediately. You're supposed to wait a few days before washing so it has time to really set in. Kind of like a stain you don't treat immediately and leave in your dirty pile for days before washing, and doesn't wash out.

Hullo Chloe, The vegetable oil is for cleaning oil paints from brushes, a cleaner oil(truly any clean oil product will work) will remove a denser oil from a brush and the oil particle paints. Many painters have used clean oils for cleaning your oil paints out of your dirty oil paint brushes. You are better off trying to use Chelsea lavender cleaner or Masters Brush cleaning soap. I have used Masters brush cleaner to remove even acrylic paints from brushes, but it takes soaking and you do not always get a "perfectly clean" brush. Reshaping brushes is where Masters shines too! I have been able to use them again, so there is that!

I dont actually soak them with the soap for brushes that were basically a brick because of dried paint. I would wet them and activate the soap then kinda just firmly (but also not roughly) scrub them against a raised stiff plastic- in the majority of cases a travel soap container i got at walmart or target. I then rinse/wash off the soap and repeat. It takes about 2 or 3 passes but ive completely revived brushes like that with 0 bristle breakage. I do that also with "new" used brushes i get 2nd hand just to make sure theyre clean. (Getting any possible oils or acrylic out so i dont risk cross contaminating paint mediums)

If you don't use the makeup brush to apply but only to blend and soften edges it works amazingly well. I used that on a sky in acrylics when restoring a painting my dad did. I suck at acrylic and it was champion! Also as you said it is lovely to softly blend oils. Again not to apply the paint with.

I think the vegetable oil is supposed to help break down any remaining OIL paint in the bristles, since those paints realistically can't be solubilized or cleaned with water. This can also work with acrylics to a point, but anything else won't get much more clean than you would get it with soap and water. The oil can also help keep the bristles moisturized and soft/pliable. Oils can break down other oils, so I think that's the idea behind the hack. Using household oils to clean and maintain vs using something like acetone or turpentine which will dry out and potentially cause damage to your brushes over time without proper maintenance.

Also, vegetable oil would be better to use for health as you don’t have to do it in a highly vented area.

I know a few artists that use make up brushes as dry brushes for blending over paints already applied. I don’t wear makeup, so don’t quote me on this, but I think they are blush brushes; the ones that are larger, very full, probably an in in diameter if you squeeze the bristles together. The pains are applied with other brushes first and then dry brushed over to blend. I personally use makeup brushes for cleaning camera gear because of it’s softness.

But once you've covered your paintbrush in oil and vaseline to make it look nice, does it still paint well afterward? I'm interested to see if all the oils resist the paint, or it mixes in with the paint, etc. I would assume you're only supposed to use a small amount, but those were my first thoughts.

Your brushes won’t be good for watercolour. You have to really REALLY clean it before using it for waterbased products. For oil paint it’s ok… you need to work the paint into the brush a bit more but you can shape your brush tip with a tiny bit of hard soap too

Also in South Africa we have a brand of soap called Dove which will remove acrylic paint from clothing if done soon after messing, I brushed up against Mars black on a painting and using Dove to wash the dress, no more Mars balck. I saw a video on restoring paintbrush bristles using hair conditioner and another one using a curling tong to straighten them

As for the second live hack: I saw a similar video on Pinterest and was able to successfully repeat it There are several conditions: 1 - the stem of the pen through which you blow should have a narrowing to the tip, so that the air flow is narrower. You have too wide undirected airflow, you need to apply more force, as a result of which everything splashes and spreads 2 - You need to blow at a certain angle, not just on the tip, but a little to the side, preferably up. You need to sit a drop of ink with the tip instead of just directing air at it.And also just a tip that there should be a certain distance between the marker and the paper, then the splashes are better 3 - You need to be able to apply force to your breathing, you did not get splashes, but drips because you blew for a long time. For a simple, spray-free splash, you just need to blow quickly as if you were blowing the dust away 4 - Markers can even be childish felt-tip pens or highlighters or permament markers, they just need to be full of ink so that the tip is "juicy", with "dry" markers it does not work even if they write perfectly on paper. I don't know if it's about what markers you use or not, but soaking in alcohol or something like that DOESN'T really help, the splashes will be translucent and will spread like droll 🤕 (yeah I experiment with this a bit). You just need the marker to be full of ink in the tip

If ever you need to do a project with large lettering you can use word to create 3D letters. Make them the size you need, then print it out. You can add chalk to the back and then trace it onto the paper. It will help give you letters that are all the same size and font! 😊 you can also reuse this to gently trace on your letters where you would like them! This will help you with spacing out your letters 😊 You can also use lightly scribbled pencil so you can clean up the area around the letters after!

But you can just iron it before putting in the wash and it will stay adhered to fabric. I use acrylic paint mixed with a little bit of textile medium when I’m painting on freckles or moles on my vinyl dolls. I think the textile medium is supposed to help turn acrylic paint into fabric paint. I would trust it more than the fabric softener. I have used fabric softener on doll hair though. Also, I totally relate to having a supply/tool and losing it a moment later. It also happens often when I’m wrapping gifts. With the vegetable oil, I think it’s supposed to be used to clean oil paints off of brushes, as an alternative to harsher chemicals such as turpentine.

The marker was really great. Good find for a project.

The blowing method is an “old” technique. Some company the name of which I cannot remember, used to sell a balloon type blower on a British craft channel a few years back. It was attached to pens for spraying colour. I also don’t remember whether alcohol or watercolour pens were used which shows how impressed I was with the end results!

Try the old Cra z Art blo-pens or Crayola blow-n-go. They sold the kits in the 2000s. It worked best with juicy markers and a longer consistent blowing.

Rae did the blow pen thing with the marker a VERY long time ago and it worked pretty well, but the aim was poor... I think she used a washable Crayola marker... Water based.

for shaping brushes you can you egg white, if cook an egg: go with your brush in the shell, shape it and wash a day later.

I really like that marker you made!! 👍 You need a matching paintbrush and pencil or palette!! 🎨 Learning to care for paintbrushes is something I'd like to see. It seems like a spa for hard-working brushes, but it isn't a NICU for newborn brushes with birth defects.
