Interesting discussion. I faced a similar quandary about upgrading to V Collection 10. At the time, I was wanting only the marvellous Acid V (TB 303 emulation), but the US $149 V 10 upgrade was not much more money (I had missed the $49 intro for the Acid V). V 10 added Augmented Piano/Brass/Woodwinds, as well as CP 70 and Acid V, but an unexpected bonus was the MiniFreak V, which I love as much as the Acid V. Unlike others in this discussion, I don’t feel that Arturia is doing me wrong with the high upgrade prices. As a former developer myself, I don’t begrudge them charging more for their newer offerings.

The sheer number of instruments and sounds in these Arturia collections tends to discourage going deeply enough into any one of them to really learn it and use it to synthesize your own sounds. But there are some deep instruments in there, with sounds created by experienced fellow synthesists who know how to use a preset to invite you to experiment. With and without words they suggest trying things.

Yes, you're right. Far too many for most of us to learn in depth although relatively easy to tweak. They are NKS-compatible so if you have Komplete Kontrol (free) or an Arturia controller you can tweak settings from the keyboard.

Thanks for the video. Question: does the Arturia Keylab MKii controller control each of the V collection instruments directly in a DAW or do you need to load up Analog Lab V as an intermediary?
@IanWaugh2 жыл бұрын
Hi - It will control them directly, in a DAW, the stand-alone versions or via Analog Lab. Hope that helps.
@easyneal2 жыл бұрын
FYI. I have a Keylab49 MK2, V collection 7. FL Studio 20. The V collection synths will not record automation/knob tweaks in FL Studio. This issue also affects Pigments 3.5. As you theorised, opening the synth in Analog lab is a work around. The problem is the synths in the latest Analog lab are from V collection 9 and will not open the synths from V collection 7 even though they are more or less the same. I've reached out to Arturia about this and have been "Patiently" waiting for a fix since December 2021. They gave me some free fx as an apology a few months ago. The reverb is amazing. It kind of feels like V collection is actually a subscription by stealth.

Arturia has put a lot of effort into creating and maintaining the V Collection. The price isn't too high for what you get. The latest versions load much faster. That may also be true by just applying the latest V8 updates. I had already updated to V9 when I noticed the improvement. I also like the U-He Synths, Omnisphere, Synapse Audio synths, Roland synths, Full Bucket, XILS and a whole lot more. I ordered an Oberheim OB-X8 to have a piece of history. That is the cost of a few V Collections. Ha.

Yes, one of the great things about Arturia as a company, as mentioned in the video, is that they do release updates for their software and hardware. I wasn't complaining about the overall price as such, but observing that the update isn't such good value. Not noticed any difference in loading speed but they all seem to load fairly quickly. An OB-X8 - Wow! I'm waiting for Behringer to catch up 😀

@@IanWaugh I use PluginGuru Unify to host all my VST synths and sounds libraries. A big improvement in loading speed when I switch to different Arturia synths as of the V9 update. Regarding your comment about how some channels specialize in comparing vintage hardware synths and digital emulations, I don't really care what these folks say or demonstrate, it's much like the digital CD vs analog vinyl album debate. To me if it sounds good, that's all that matters. I enjoy listening to vinyl, even the new reissues and remasters and also buy cds. The cost of new vinyl releases has risen so much and will go higher due to demand, I have to be more selective. Personally, over the years I've accumulated quite a few soft synths, like the Waldorf PPG, several versions of the Prophet 5, VS, Minimonstah, Oddity, etc and a bunch of stuff from Native Instruments. The more I download, the less I use. So I don't see myself getting 32 synths..I get overwhelmed when writing if I have TOO many choices. I think the best and most accurate sounding vintage analog emulation synth out there is from GForce who just released their Oberheim OB-X clone. It is probably the best softsynth I've ever heard. But I passed on it, because it sounds SO HUGE..I think it would blow all your other tracks out of the mix. Thanks for another great informative video discussing the Pros and Cons of software. You really do help folks with your honest presentation Ian, and help people make an informed decision.

Hey Richard - Thank you soooo much for your very kind comments. I'm certainly with you on the 'if it sounds good' front. Not a good workflow 😮 G Force has a very good reputation but, other than those mentioned and Native Instruments, I try very hard not to buy any more software sounds! I succeed. Up to a point. Hi Ian… I have a question for you and I hope you will offer your best guess. I have a MacBook Pro that meets Arturia’s minimum specs for V Collection 9 except…. It runs at 2.5 gigahertz instead of the recommended 3.4 gigahertz. Do you think I could get started with Collection 9 on that computer or should I just wait until I can afford a new Mac. Soft synths are something I don’t have much experience with so I value your advice. Thanks!
@IanWaugh Жыл бұрын
Hey Gene - Most minimum specs are the absolute rock bottom spec you need. At least they used to be. Maybe they've changed and I honestly don't know how close to the bone Arturia's minimum specs are. And it's not just a matter of running the standalone versions - you'd probably want to run them in a DAW for recording and that needs more CPU power. Some standalone versions may run but other may stutter. If you're planning on upgrading soon and there's a good deal on V Collection it might be worth buying so you can maybe try some before upgrading. Otherwise I'd wait till you upgrade. Hope that helps 😊
