This is a keyboard-performance oriented midi-controller. I use an Ableton Push. I don't think it's necessary to duplicate DAW/Production functions on something that's unlikely to be the only piece of hardware in a studio. My guitar doesn't have drum pads either. I've always thought they were a little out of place on keyboards.
@IanWaugh5 күн бұрын
Hi Michael - you could use it live but I suspect most folks use it as a controller in their studio. Its integration with Komplete Kontrol is a major factor and, as a controller, many folks would like drum pads although I personally would rarely use them. Pads on a guitar - would definitely lose its cool factor 😄

I like the industrial design of the Opsix SE though. It also allows for some ergonomics. The empty areas on the left and right for example. The gentle slope of the case would let me put my track pad on the left and mouse on the right. I find that most of my production woes are more about ergonomics these days. I use stock Ableton shit for everything because, well it sounds good. Korg dropped the price to $1299 so bit easier to digest. How much is a NI controller? $850USD there abouts? Not a million miles away for a 80 voice FM synth which is I think DX7 compatible but it has a whole range of other features. Most of music production is about composition anyway. Bottleneck isn't going to be Ableton or some synth. If you can write a good track all else pretty much is forgiven. So back to ergonomics again I guess. The OPsix seems like a cool synth but I've always kind of liked FM synths so it's easy for me to kind of understand the appeal.
@IanWaugh7 күн бұрын
There's a synth and keyboard for everyone 😊 The OP-6 is great but it's a VST in a dedicated box. Although some might appreciate the extra space, most would prefer more and better controls The upside is it is down to a better price and if it's just what you need, it's a good time to buy 👍
@Screaming-Trees7 күн бұрын
@@IanWaugh Yeah fair enough. And as I said I like the industrial design aspect of it. I'd pay for that. For you it's a vst in a box which is also a completely legitimate assessment. Not everyone cares about design. I spend 90% of my time making techno, modern trance and 2 step UK garage within Ableton and I use a lot of Operator for that. It is basically all just the piano roll and a mouse/track-pad combo. That's my workflow. It's very clinical and I'm not sure most people could hack that. But I do like having a keyboard in front of me so you can play. That's enjoyable. Ableton and all its synths/devices and what have you are great and offer lots of workflow advantages but when I want to let my hair down a bit I like hardware. No screen, no mouse etc. You can just play. It's nice. I have a whole bunch. When it's down to business though it's faster to work within Ableton and the hardware sleeps.

Not familiar with VST Live but I don't think JBridge is causing the problem as the demo version works exactly as the full version except it stops working after 20 minutes. Also, I'm not sure how that would affect the mixer as it's to do with plugins not mixer control.

I think the tempo variations were more in that.. as in the fast parts were faster and slow parts slower..
@IanWaugh8 күн бұрын
Quite possibly. I don't think Chopin included tempo markings and most performers have their own speeds for the sections. With many pieces of virtuostic classical music I think there has been a tendency to play them ever faster 😄

My goto for noodling around is Galaxy Instruments Noire. None of the pianos in this video sounded very good, but that might have been the MIDI file, which seemed to be very much lacking in the expressive nuance that would highlight the differences.

Galaxy do a lot of instruments for NI. Noire is great. 👍 Yes, I tried to improve the expression but obviously not enough 🥹 You probably get bbetter results if you play the instrument yourself 😊
@NeuroPete9 күн бұрын
@ I probably wouldn’t get better results myself, as I am not a skilled pianist. However, there probably exist a number of MIDI files that were recorded by expert pianists playing them in directly. But, as you say, it is very hard to find anything that was not step-recorded. Also, it wouldn’t be a perfect test anyway, since the nuances in a particular MIDI file would depend somewhat on interactions between the player and the specific VST being played, which would not necessarily translate favourably to another VST.

i know what you mean but that section did come from the Woodland 🤔 It was interesting physically playing the pianos and hearing how they played the MIDI file. I think much of the character can come from the velocity layers and, of course, these examples only played one preset.
@rhinewater10 күн бұрын
@@IanWaugh Ian, I'm not buying this explanation, I'm afraid. I've now downloaded the Woodland piano and reproduced a few bars of the same music (starting at around 4'26" of your video), and not only is my result quite different to yours, but the difference between them is markedly greater than the differences between ANY of the seven pianos as represented by your video. So I still think there must be a rabbit away somewhere. My guess is that one of your pianos has inadvertently been left faded up, and we've in effect been hearing that layered with whichever other piano. I'm not sure how youtube handles links in comments, but I'll try to link below to an audio clip that contains 10 seconds of your Woodland piano followed by the same 10 seconds of mine. I plan to have some fun with some spoof songs, as you have done, and also use it for reference vocals for my own songwriting efforts. If it seems like I got some good use from it in 2025, I will pay for a second year, thus obtaining a permanent license. However, listening to this wonderful example using Synthesizer V, I hardly think that Ace could do a better job, though it is much more expensive.

Does ambient music generally (like almost always) avoid 3rds and 7ths to preserve ambiguity or are there certain modes that are less clearly major or minor that also lend themselves to ambient music. I never really made the connection of ambient and ambiguous in such a defining way though I get how it makes sense.
@IanWaugh17 күн бұрын
It depends 😄 For relaxation/meditative music it can help to avoid - or minimise - a tonic center which could pull the listener into following a harmonic path so ambiguity helps here. But there are also many pieces of music which do have a key but which minimise strong cadences. Anything can work , it depends on how it's put together 😊
