The fact dude is one of the best trumpet players on the planet who can also play piano like that is too much for me. Arturo Sandoval is legendary!! Awesome!!

Most of it is knowing harmonies, what sounds good and having an amazing feel for the music. If you got that down translating it to another instrument is not thaat hard.

My guy. On so many levels. The piano time was superlative, again, shows what an incredible musician he is. As another frustrated french horn player, boosts my ego, that he sucks as badly on the horn as I do. He is so humble, in spite of ruling the trumpet community for 40 years, as one of the greats. And like him, give thanks to God, and bend my knee in prayer, that both he and I can enjoy the true pleasure of just making people happy, with what we do. Played a gig Saturday, that among others had a dozen kids out on the dance floor, under 6 years old, just rocking to the beat. Nobody has to be taught how to dance, especially to toddlers, just comes naturally.

This was absolutely beautiful. The learning from this guy, the little practice toys, and the ending classical improvisation on Oscar Peterson's piano. I have passed this on to my friend from elementary and high school, who played in the French horn section of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra from the 1960s to early 1990s, Ralph Hotz. I played the horn in our high school orchestra but never, never approached Ralph's talent.

Hola Arturo!!

1:11:40 So funny how most people don't know know how much of a musician Arturo Sandoval is. I saw him live last month and was just as, or even more, impressed by his piano skill! He's a treasure. (Btw, he walked in just after me when I entered the Blues Allet building. When I turned around, I was in awe and said "my hero"! He then immediately gave me a hug. Great guy!

I could've watched another hour! Arturo is both humble and a musical genius on so many levels. He appreciates life! He's arguably the greatest trumpet player ever... and I've seen him in a flannel shirt just checking out young players at Charlie O's in Van Nuys!! (He discovered his longtime sax man Zane Musa there r.i.p.). And then you'll hear him on trumpet playing the most amazing rendition of The Star Spangled Banner at Dodger Stadium... and on PIANO w/ his big band at the Hollywood Bowl the next day! This was a great interview. This 30+ year trombone player just subscribed!

for me the interesting part begins around 47.10 where he talks about practicing and the right mindset about it before, he demonstrates how you can play many different sounds with the same equipment. it's about the imagination of the sound BEFORE you play

I do not understand why everyone asks Arturo Sandoval always about the high register,he has a sound in the middle and low register simply amazing.I would talk to him about everything except the high register, sometimes we forget that the music we play is the 90% below the acute DO.

What he says about the most important thing about tongue production is the imagination, picturing the sound in your head, because if you don’t do that once you start the sound it’s really unlikely you’ll be able to instantly alter it to fit the picture without sounding awkward or distracting. So it’s kind of a preparation thing where the mind and body work together to be ready to produce the sound that is heard or imagined, or as I like to say “EarMagined” (a word I recently coined).

I’m not surprised that he loves the Bosendorfer sound! My favorite pianos to, and a very famous pianist who I follow and have followed for years, Valentina Lisitsa, prefers them or a highly modified Steinway. She said something like the Steinways have “too much teeth“ which I totally agree with there probably made for those hard of hearing and the back rows of the symphony hall but Bosendorfers are much more musical in the right hands.
