Had he not been given a dragon, that's basically what would have happened when you think it through. He had no way to pass the wall without its breath to break it, he couldn't go round it, over it or under it, its magical nature prevented that, he needed magic to break it and dragon breath was just the right magic. I can tell you as a security officer and someone who has watched and read enough fantasy/medieval books these guards were shit. They should have sent a messenger to Sansa saying that there was a lady at the gate claiming to be Arya and asking to enter. I dont get why people are so hostile towards Sansa. Her whole life she was trained to be a wife and a mother… just like men are trained to be fighters and knights and administrators.
