Any attempt to stretch India's defenses by encroaching on two fronts (West and East) cuts both ways, likewise stretching China's efforts. Further, aggression in India would likely escalate into disputes elsewhere, such as the South China Sea; and, with western support for all of these locations (not just India) - meaning China cannot know from whence the counterattacks will occur. That is, China will be much more "stretched" than India. Lawfare is difficult when the all of the bordering nations are united against you and you are a lawless nation. Somehow, these supposed "Laws" will not stick.

Lately, I keep hearing that the US has been helping us in so many ways. I am perplexed why our popular EAM and media is spinning increasingly an ‘Anti West’ rhetoric. Adani’s episode reveals that most of the funding to build India’s infrastructure is mostly funded by Western Financial Institutions at very soft terms. At this rate, we should deny participating in BRICS currency and engaging more with the Chinese.

Purely ideological. Because it makes no geo-strategic sense. Sorry to say, this govt has always mixed ideology in foreign policy : - 'ab ki baar trump sarkaar' during US visit. When India had bipartisan support in US among both democrats & Republicans - Trudeau snub - meeting su Kyi after the rohingya massacre when she was being criticized all over the world - joint military exercise with Russia, after the Ukraine war (everything else - oil, military purchases, trade could be explained as self interest. But not the joint military exercise. Immediately next week, US announced $500M F16 package for Pakistan. Interference in indus water treaty, their ambassador in pak visited POK and called it Azad kashmir. And meeting of EAM was kept after Bilawal and Pakistanis.) And Russia itself is a Jr partner of China. And aligned with Pakistan and turkey. It makes zero sense, except when you look at it from ideological angle of current govt. Despite all this, US is helping us in time of need.

I don't think anyone thought the action is just going to concentrate in the northern sector. Certainly not our military. And i don't think we have diluted anything against Pakistan. If you look at the new ORBAT of the army from 2021 it becomes clear. In 2020 when the standoff started, it was true in some sense but not now. In 2020, immediately after chinese iincursions the army moved 39th mountain div from yol, HP ( which was the northern command reserve) to assist the outnumbered 3rd infantry div in eastern ladakh. But in 2021 the Mathura based 1 strike corps with its 2.5 divisions was moved under northern command and reassigned from Pakistan to china to relieve the 39th. Because we had unbalanced force structure against Pakistan, against which we still have 2 strike formation which are 2 corps and 21 corps. But remember the whole armoured and artillery div from 1 corps is still under the south western command which can be used to pivot the 1 corps against Pakistan if the need arises. This move prompted the half made 17 mountain strike corps previously tasked to provide offensive power in both northern and eastern sector to reorganize and reassign. 23rd infantry div based in ranchi was added to the newly raised 59th moutain div to complete the 17 strike corps, and was given the sole responsibility of eastern command. Now both northern and eastern command have a seperate offensive formations. Even general Manoj pandey who was eastern army commander in an interview reiterated the army's focus on the eastern sector.

India has adequate resources for the both and they must be strengthened further. We must teach Chinese a lesson, if they start the incursion. 2. The dilemma about land or sea is also not an issue, as India is upgrading its naval power. Jyoti, unlike India's, most countries' MEA/State Depts. play to a local audience. US and Germany definitely do so (regardless of what you think). Canadian PM Harper essentially confirmed the same point in the 2019 Raisina dialogues in speaking about foreign media. Jaishankar is finally doing the same thing - focusing inwards. Indians elites (Print Subscribers?) are fed up with the West's hypocrisy... and J is finally playing to the gallery, with no real foreign policy downside. Tharoor wishes he was the MoFA - but he is never going to make it. Good for J. And the German Foreign Minister... well she is a well known Pak-loving, Indo-skeptic. US ambassador in pak visits POK and calls it Azad kashmir 4. Meddling in indus water treaty 5. Pak enjoys patronage of both China & US, now. The same pak that US admin gates, and who had betrayed them recently in Afg, wrt taliban takeover. You have delivered them into US arms again. 6. What do you get in return? Nothing - because Russia is a junior partner to China, aligned with pak & turkey. Can't help you. 7. The russian equipment - the flying coffin migs and the S300s which cannot defend against latest weaponry - are crap. US was ready to help India with a $500M package to help us move away from Russian equipment - instead you gifted it to pakistan. The acerbic, boastful arrogant comments of the EAM - US admin does notice it. The viral videos of Jaishankar have the opposite effect in real life. When you use your entire state media machinery to shill for Russia and attack the west, they do notice. When Indians are everywhere making pro-Russia, anti-West comments - they do notice. The tricks you used here in India to browbeat and silence critics, aren't doing to work with USA.

Some are concerned whether Russia will support India in a conflict with China as today China and Russia are blood brothers, and 'their friendship has no limits". Also, the performance of Russian weapons in Ukraine has been disappointing, to say the least. It would be prudent for India to pivot towards the United States in a military alliance, which will be sufficient to deter China from further provocative actions. The US is India's best hope.

Well there was a reason for that. After independence our political class was very idealistic bunch and was very anti western because of colonial experience. Thats why they wanted to do everything opposite of what the west was doing, even ignoring the feasibility of the ideas. Thats why we had socialist economic model, so called non alignment policy, closed market and a clear leaning towards the soviets. Pakistan was a different state. They didn't have the idealistic mass political leaders. They were mostly feudal zamindars, military officers etc. And when west wanted a ally against the soviets Pakistanis were clearly willing to be anti soviet to get benefits from the west.

Lawfare cuts both ways, that is to say both parties can apply it to support its case. Sad to say in reality it is an impotent tool to use, that is to say it is not enforceable as each party will maintain it is right and the other party is wrong. In the light of this lawfare can be consigned to the waste paper basket. In a situation like that between India and China, China is now vehemently saying it does not recognise the border treaties its tributary state ie Tibet signed in the past with British India as it was cajoled and coerced to do so by the crafty British. China maintains those were unfair treaties and are null and void. Did India bring this matter up with the UN Court of International Justice (ICJ)? If not, why not? China has always treated the McMohon Line and the LAC with disdain and as utter rubbish. In light of what the Chinese are saying and have always said that Tibet then consisted of what is presently called Arunachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Bhutan and Sikhim and as such these are their rightful territories since time immemorial. Btw the Simla Convention of 1914/15 recognised Tibet as a Suzerainty (i.e. a Tributary State of China). It must be mentioned that China was not a signatory to the Simla Convention. In order to enforce their right the Chinese do not want to apply Lawfare even though Lawfare favours them. Why so? Because with Lawfare you can be arguing over and over and still find yourself marking time thereat till infinitum. Today China is saying that Right is Might is totally wrong but Might is Right is totally right, which means you can enforce your right from a Position of Might and Strength. Sadly India lacks both. India today is a very poor country (as per GDP per Capita) and militarily a weakling and this is the case then how is it going to respond to China's might and strength? No other way but to "kow tow" (i.e.to humbly bow down and surrender) to them. The time for this is not too far off, perhaps in the next 25 years or much EARLIER. The plain truth is, today no one can truly help India, not the USA not the UN not NATO not the QUAD and not other legal, political and military groupings or organs. It looks like India will have no choice but to eat a humble pie and give in to China regarding the said territories, with its head bowed, its tail between its legs and with its thumb in its mouth. This clearly shows that India is not only a very slow learner, it is also not a good steward of the territories and resources it inherited from British India. There is always a price to pay for being weak and impotent. Btw, upon getting independence from the British, India's first PM Nehru said that India did not need to have an army as India was not going to fight anyone and, as such, India will have no enemies. Indeed how "wise" was he. Today India is paying the price for Nehru's folly. THE BITTER TRUTH IS THAT THE INDIAN PUBLIC IS VICARIOUSLY RESPONSIBLE FOR NEHRU'S ACTIONS. Dream on India.

The only long term solution for the border problem on India's Northern frontier lies in Tibet's full independence. The McMohan line was demarcated between British India and independent Tibet. The time is not yet ripe for it. India should take five plus years to reduce it's dependence on Russian arms, fully develop border infrastructure and cross $100 billion defence budget. After that India should give a full push for Tibet's full independence. I believe that the CCP and President Xi are laying foundation for Tibet again becoming an independent nation. India should manage the LAC situation till then.

Interesting question but if you are willing to keep your politics aside, there might be a simple explanation. West countries are democracies and what people say in media is a factor there. If you are able to influence the public opinion in these countries, it adds to your diplomatic efforts and helps Indian interests. In case of China, what good will strong statements do? They won't run in China anyway. At the diplomatic level, it will only raise the temperature which right now is not in India's interests. We don't want to end up like Pakistan, do we?
