Bandha: bind; bond; arrest; capture; put together; lock; shut; close; redirect; seal; stop; cohere. Bandhas come under the
broad category of mudra (seal) and their usage is one of the
most important foundational techniques used in the practice of ashtanga yoga.
There are three main bandhas: mula bandha (root lock, pelvic floor, first or root chakra), uddhyana bandha (flying up, stomach lock, second chakra), and jalandhara bandha (chin lock, fifth or throat chakra).
A bandha is a set of muscular contractions in a specific area of the body that serves to stop and redirect the flow of prana (energy, or life force) within the body. Applying bandhas involves sealing in one’s life force to direct, purify, and unblock the flow of energy within the vast network of pranic channels throughout the body. Skillfully locking specific locations along the central axis enables the yogi to confine his prana in the middle so that he can untie the powerful knots of ignorance that are formed by his karma and conditioned habit patterns.
The sacred texts say that “like a man and his shadow go together, so too do the prana (life force) and the atma (Self within the body).”1 Thus the yogi utilizes bandhas to train his mind onto the movements of his prana, and he improves his chances of glimpsing the elusive Self who “runs swifter than thought and yet never moves.”
From the Hatha Yoga Pradipika:
In order to awaken this goddess, who is sleeping at the entrance of the great door (brahma dwara) mula bandha, uddhyana bandha, jalandhara bandha should be performed.
David Garrigues is one of the few teachers in the US certified to teach Ashtanga Yoga by the late world renowned yoga master Sri K Pattahbi Jois. As an Ashtanga Ambassador, he bases his teachings on the idea that 'Anyone can take practice,' a core idea in the teachings of Sri K Pattahbi Jois.
David's mission is to help others flourish within the contemporary lineage of Ashtanga Yoga. While staying true to the traditional teachings of Ashtanga, David is adept at adapting the practice to suit all levels of practitioner and make it accessible to everyone.

This Asana Kitchen was filmed at David's home studio in Philadelphia, the Ashtanga Yoga School of Philadelphia www.aysphiladel.... David teaches a Primary Series and Second Series intensive there each year during the spring and fall.
