A lesson im trying to learn. Im only speaking about myself from now on and not mentioning others unless they are there. Its not normal for me! Im trying.

Thank you for focusing on gossip as a major vice. Often, within the Christian context, we speak of other sins with some regularity. All the focus is on transgressions like sex outside of marriage, violence, idolatry, malice, selfishness, lacking faith, but little time is spent on a wrongdoing that probably happens far more often than any of these moral failings - our tendency to gossip. I like the way Nell O'Leary explains that our penchant for gossip really does stem from our fear of truly addressing the person behind our grievance. Gossip, in many ways, is a very damaging avoidance strategy.

I relate. I am often too scared to confront others about my grievances. I fear being dismissed or turning it into an argument. Depending on the person you are dealing with, they may dismiss your grievances or start arguing with you to deflect. This is not an excuse to gossip, but perhaps you may have to find a different way to address the issue at hand.

Thank you for speaking on this topic of gossiping Such a life ruiner because they build lies and lies after someone like a habit It's like making a shrine for someone to hate

Thanks for being so honest. It can be addictive and self-satisfying to focus on what is wrong with others and the world around us rather than looking at our own transgressions.

Love this video. Overall agree, gossip reveals an internal nastiness and should be avoided. But oftentimes I find it very useful to parse out other people’s poor behaviour with others, without being judgemental of the person but of their actions. Sometimes this works by the other person telling me I’m unreasonable and gives me an alternative perspective, or I realise my own contribution to this person’s behaviour, or I can use their behaviour as a teaching point for others and myself of how not to behave.

How can you tell if you're gossiping or not ? I find it very hard to discern when I've entered the wrong territory vs just sharing something from my own life.

My go-to question is, “Is this my information to share?” If I need to verbally process something with a close friend that involves another person, I REALLY try to be as gracious to the other person involved as I can. And if I catch myself sliding into gossip, I usually ask myself, “Is there something about my reaction to this news that I need to process by myself?” I’m not perfect at it, but Mary’s example helps to remind me of the good of interior silence, keeping all things in my heart (and bringing them to the Lord).

I ask myself this a lot too! I think for me gossip is anything doesn’t help anyone by sharing or that’s very personal/private to the person. A lot of things you can talk to people and ask advice about you can also just use generic terms like “my friend” or “my coworker.”
@vanessabernal83399 ай бұрын
yes, i think intention matters. why am i sharing this information and to who? am i being genuine or am i looking for reason to criticize, but most importantly have i brought my concerns up to God? this is of course easier said than done and the line of gossip and genuine information seeking seem to be blurred around topics such as politics and celebrities. the way headlines are formed and knowing that journalist are willing to slander those they disagree with certainly puts us at a sin of occasion if we aren’t careful.

For me gossip is like caring about the personal life of another person that is like famous but I don't care at all or something between being famous or another person you don't know. Not politics, history, religion, etc.

This is my issue… coworker drama. I can be just fine working alone by myself until a coworker draws me into their drama with another coworker that I had secretly had my own struggles with, only to find myself going down the rabbit hole like a sinking ship and asking God to forgive me AGAIN for gossiping. It’s a vicious cycle. I really need a good comment to say in these situations to help stop the rabbit hole process.

ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM: “Respect that Table in which we all participate. After participating in such a Table, and communing such Food, why take up arms against one another? Not only arrows and javelins cause wounds. Certain words can inflict more profound wounds. A word pronounced against your brother is poison shot from your mouth. If your neighbor harmed you, ask God to show mercy to him. He is your brother, a member of Christ’s body. He is called to one and the same Table with you.”

Great video. Thank you! Also, when i think about gossiping, i ask myself, is what I'm about to say (or said) about the other person true? This especially works when i heard something about another person. How can i talk about something when i wasn't even there and i just heard it from someone else?
