Ascetic, austere and hermit all derive from ancient Greek. The word ascetic derives from the verb "ασκώ", transliterated as "asko" which can be translated into English as "exercise" or "exert". An ascetic is a person undergoing a personal transformation, usually a spiritual or mental one, by austere "askesis". One of the ways this can be achieved is by refraining to participate in social gatherings or events and by choosing to live in the "έρημος (desert)" transliterated as "erimos" from which the word "hermit" derives.

That's correct. Some Greek words were Latinized, meaning that they were borrowed from Greek and changed into Latin root words. I wonder where the Greeks got those words, but I guess we'll never know :D

Perfect explanation...just one minor correction...since we latinize the greek writing, we should respect the rules of the latin language, therefore έρημος becomes erēmos

@@s.papadatos6711 I don't speak a lick of Greek, so it all seems pretty fascinating. As words travel from language to language, spellings change and definitely how they're pronounced. That's why sometimes you can hardly believe that two very different words could ever have been related. Thanks for watching and leaving a reply. I hope you're enjoying the other videos on the channel

Are the words fragmentarily, primordially, rudimentarily, conterminously and pragmatize actual words?
@snaplanguage

They all look legit to me, though I'm not sure you'd see or use "counterminously" or "pragmatize" very often unless you're in a field of study where these words may be common. :)
