Another Ebert inaccuracy. Themes and incidents from the orig. show are seeded all throughout this movie; the producer and writers definitely saw it and incorporated stuff form the best episodes. The runaway robot; the isolated ship they board; the "fake"/demolished Jupiter 2, etc. They claimed to have done so at press events, and it's obvious they did.

I thought this movie wasn't too bad, either. I don't think it deserves the hate that it gets. The concept of Jupiter 1 being the exterior launch vehicle with Jupiter 2 "shedding" it was a clever way of showing a touchstone to the original. It's too bad Matt LeBlanc's career kind of petered out after Friends. This should have been his breakout role. Unfortunately, people just couldn't help but think of Joey when they watched it. :/

The saucer shape of the J1/booster was deliberate, to prevent the Global Sedition from observing the true details of the J2, from which they could have learned key information and used it against the program (and/or: to speed development of their own ship to Alpha Prime -- remember, it's a race). The saucer shell also served as a layer of physical protection -- like standoff armor -- for the J2 as it was being built, and all the way up to orbit. The chemical rockets that get it up there were the decision of a committee, which selected the most-reliable way of doing the job -- one which did not needlessly disclose the capabilities of the J2's engines or the ship's performance to the Sedition's prying eyes. You've got to put the whole thing in its operational context to find out why they made the design decisions they did. Not all of this could be explained on film, but they all make sense given the backstory and the ultra-high stakes involved.

@Raguleader2 жыл бұрын
It made more sense back in the 1960s when the show was made. The "family adventure" plot was still pretty popular. So later iterations of LiS get away with doing that because it'd be weird. Great movie. On my top 10 list of sci-fi space travel movies to watch. The one thing, but a small thing. How come they didn't tuck the Robinsons in cryo until after takeoff and breaking into orbit first just to make sure everything was running good. I am not gonna let anyone put me to sleep until we successfully break orbit. I'm just saying. Executing a slingshot maneuver through the sun to escape its gravity and get back on track was brilliant. Robots opening scene "destroy the Robinson, destroy the ship" would have made a great action theme ride at Universal or Disneyland.
