What's interesting about this scene, is that to an astronomer it proves that Prot IS an alien or at least he's BEEN to this system. Those numbers, you can not fake, you have to KNOW the answer to model them correctly. They knew of the gravity presence based on their observations, and to be given the answer that fits it exactly. You can't fake that. For me this scene proved Prot was exactly who he stated to be, an alien from a planet called K-PAX.
@Malachor01
@Malachor01 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! Couldn't have said it any better. Do you think that the alien inhabited his body, perhaps via some form of telepathy/projection or do you think his entire being was the alien?
@Treffaut
@Treffaut Жыл бұрын
@@Malachor01 The books leave it probable either it’s a split personality (signs point to a terribly traumatized man with least one other persona who managed through the pain) OR somehow an alien really did hitch a ride inside. At the very least, another resident of the facility COMPLETELY vanishes the night Prot invites her to leave Earth together. All they find is the normal man in a catatonic state and a hand mirror in the room.

The fact we know too much about so many people and everyone acts surprised when, given the oversharing, they aren't perfect, it's depicted with shock and outrage. I've long contended that Prot is an alien intelligence that took over the patient's body when he had a mental break. Having grown up with him, Prot stuck around until he was sure he could leave his friend with someone that would really take care of him, not leave him isolated in a room somewhere. Because he was in his mind, the hypnotherapy reached the patient toward the end which is the scene where he lashed out at Jeff Bridges' character.

My mom bought this movie on DVD for my birthday because I liked it. And as some other commenters have said, I believe that Prot WAS an ALIEN! However, he was an alien in a human body (alien mind, human body). In a deleted scene, Prot draws up a map of The Milky Way Galaxy seen from an entirely different part of space, possibly from where his alien part came from. Though in the deleted bits they prove him to be an alien in both mind and body. Humans don't see ultraviolet, Prot's people can.

@@Galactic123 First it's a movie and you're not gonna make a much more rigorous questioning in a movie, unless all the movie revolves around this theme. You are going to lose your audience. Second you seem to not understand what is going on here. Only 10 people on the planet knows about this system which has not been publish on internet yet and then comes a man from a psychiatric institution, who enters formulas and suddenly those multiples formulas give the exact orbits and explain a problem those scientist could not explain. What on earth do you want them to do more to be worth of their PHds? You can't go there to check, the first star Vega in constellation of Lyra is 25 light years away and others stars are 2000 light years away. A light year mean that if you travel in a spacecraft that could go as fast at the speed of light, you would still need 25 years to reach it. So again, what those PHds could do more faced with a guy who explains them with mathematics and equation things they didn't know? Of course there would be more question than those 2 questions and 5 minutes here but they could not do much and be like a pupil in front of his master class and ask for the answers.

42 year old guy here. Seen this movie to death. One of my all time favourites. I've watched this one seen an inordinate amount of times on KZbin too. EVERY time is like the first time. I get chills and well up. The music, the build up, the realisation he's using legitimate and approved mathematical formulae, the crescendo at the end.....man oh man. It just takes me out of myself to another place. Just like the movie. Bravo Kevin Spacey. Bravo Jeff Bridges. What an absolute masterclass in film making.

"What just happened in there?" We just had our ass handed to us by an alien is what happened.. In the 3 book series Prot demonstrates light travel using a flashlight and a cat.. All that said, being an Astronomer myself, this movie made a profound impact on my life.. I spoke with the writer as to why there was never a follow up movie. (A real gentleman btw) "The movie didn't do as well at the box office as we had hoped."

IF, we as human beings ever encounter a life form like Prot we can only hope he would be as patient and accommodating a Prot. He explains with his calculations what these scientists had been unable to explain and simply explains it away as common knowledge. Not reviling what his true capabilities truly are.

The genius of his character is, it shows you what is is like trying to debunk someone with a completely different worldview especially when their "common knowledge" is actually well thought out. The mistake people make is just assuming that every other worldview other than their own can easily be debunked.

The flaw in the savant argument is that the Rembrandt has to come first before the Savant can make a perfect copy. In this case. He just gave the astronomers information that had up til that moment never been recorded.

he's a genius with an interest in astronomy. This was actually part of the story. The psychologist investigates his patient to try to unravel what happened. He was a man of low means but extraordinary intellect. he dedicated his life to providing for his family who were quite literally everything to him. His family was brutally murdered and he snapped. it is possible that he calculated out what was happening in this star system and came up with a theory that checked all the boxes on what was known about it so far. the fact the scientists were able to match more current data to the calculations he came up with just acts as supporting evidence of his theory. It would, however, require him to be considerably more intelligent than his colleagues... but it does happen. Knowing he was encountering psychological problems he sought out a psychologist whom he believed was smart enough to unravel it all. He knew he was losing his mind and sought help. Insane people quite often understand there is something wrong and seek help. it is also possible that he really is an alien consciousness that has been in regular contact with this individual and really did come to try to help his friend. all the evidence seems to support it. in the end it doesn't really matter. He has fallen and it is unclear if the psychologist that was chosen will ever be able to help him, a sadly common predicament among individuals in similar situations. Most people who have been broken that severely just never recover. The only question is, was the psychologist able to get through enough to touch the last vestiges of the person who used to be there before he completely shutdown, or did he come into contact with an alien who was trying to help his friend who had already shutdown. I love that they never answer this question. this is what makes it a great movie.

Great scene but never followed up with other questions or information. E.g. some people today would know things about our stellar system including things like comets like Halley's coming by every 76y etc. Other factoids about Perseid meteor shower or space junk or objects like Voyager and presence of asteroid belt. These things wouldn't be visible from far away from our solar system at all. So it's possible he is from k-pax. However, it is also possible, that he is an astronomer who studied k-pax and went mad and something snapped in him and he thought he was k-pax'ian. So he knew the math around k-pax and the orbit data. However, no further questions were asked about things outside this a bit but still connected to k-pax with new things no one was working on and you'd need only Hubble to get that info. Now just with one thing, jumping to conclusion is a bit much. Maybe his sub-conscious knew more questions would come and snapped him out of this delusion and everything is just made up from his mind.

the biggest stretch of the imagination isnt even that there is a space alien on earth- the biggest stretch is that Prot did that and (after some time to let the shock wear off) , the astrophysicists didnt go completely bananas trying to get him to come back so they could see what ELSE Prot knew.

I both loved and hated this scene. From this point, they still don't treat him any differently. They just sort of walk off puzzled and the scientists fade away. They had a chance to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt there is life elsewhere and he is on the earth, and they just...left that part of the story un-followed.

*SCENE EXPLAINED:* The astronomers were seeing unusual orbital disturbances, "perturbations", in the rotation pattern of the binary stars but couldn't explain why even when factoring in the assumed gravitational effects of the systems bodies determined by mass. They were expecting to see a tighter more circular orbital pattern between the two stars with the planets having variable orbits due to shifting inner-system gravitational tugs. What he diagrams is a system with more asymmetrical orbits for all bodies, however, the orbits are fixed instead of variable and one of the outer planets generates four times greater gravity than its mass should generate (the cause is unexplained but that's what the equation shows) which effectively acts as a counter-weight for the binary stars and allows the planets orbits to be fixed in place over time. Basically, when two large masses orbit each other, anything orbiting that system should experience intermittent bursts of more gravity/less gravity depending on which star is closer in orbital procession. When the smaller star is closer, the planets orbit should become elongated, and when the larger star is closer, the planets orbit should become shortened. This is what the astronomers expected to see. However, one of the outer planets generates 4-times more gravity than its mass should, which creates a medium tug force on the inner planets to counter the shifting inner-system mass of the stars. Your welcome!!
