is it so hard to understand that if you remove an organism the whole ecosystem is compromised, pull a spark plug out of your car's engine and see if it work.

Who'd have thought there were so many more reasons to save the whales?

I am sure that all species are important to the eco system, but... The oceans are ridiculously huge and the number of other species that that provide similar services are probably huge. I think humans drastically overestimate our ability to change the ecosystems of both land and sea. We are much smaller and more insignificant than we think. This is the great example of humans thinking too highly of themselves. BUT!!! We should still do whatever we can to maintain the natural order of our planet.

Im all for conservation. Just make sure to control the population and its food chain once it has recovered. So often we overprotect the cute animals only to have them overpopulate and eat up their food supply or their food supply gets overfished.

is it legal to kill whales? i caught a small one a few years back in the pacific
@plainlake
@plainlake 10 жыл бұрын
Depends on species, legal status in the country and permit. In your case, probably not. The biggest problems are not whaling these days though.

I have a plan for that. Pollute the ocean with mercury until its really unhealthy to eat fish. Than people will stop eating fish and oceans will thrive :)

If not for the fact that a lot of species are actually important to our comfortable existence , scientific research and progress I wouldn't care for saving species half as much. People are using the emotional arguments to promote saving the animals. Because they are cute, because they will suffer, because your grandchildren will never get to see those animals again. This kind of promotion has been pretty successful but i feel like people are becoming desensitized; and for good reasons. Emotional arguments arent really logical. In fact some people become immune to the emotional argument by developing an allergy and never again wanting to talk about the subject. This is terrible for the movement. I feel like if we want to increase preservation of species we need to shift gears. Start using logical arguments instead of emotional ones. Logical arguments are hard to sell at first but they are build on solid foundation. You cant draw a picture of a cute animal to sell a logical argument. Once people truly understand reasons why its worth preserving certain species informed laws can be made that will really help the situation. we can also start saving species that truly matter not the ones that are cute or popular. There is still a lot of concept that uninformed public could benefit from. For example a lot of people arent aware of the concept of key stone predator where it is in fact a predatory animal that keeps many species alive. An example of such predators for which a lot of people dont care about because they are scary are: sharks, snakes and spiders. Sharks going extinct would most likely resolve in an extinction of multiple other species of fish. A lot of them probably being cute.

The problem is that logical arguments only work on logical, educated people. Often emotion drowns out logical argument. If people were less ignorant and self-serving we wouldn't be facing the issues we have. Look at politics, the elections in the US are pretty much coming from emotion. People don't to act, change or take responsibility.

@TheMidnightdemon

and who are you to decide what is appropriate?
@aducksecho
@aducksecho 10 жыл бұрын
TheMidnightdemon Who am I? Who am I?! I am Bandobras. In this particular case etiquette determines the appropriateness. You will learn about it as you continue your education.
@TheMidnightdemon
@TheMidnightdemon 10 жыл бұрын
aducksecho to educate someone about etiquette is nothing more than training a dog doing some funny tricks. i´m educating myself. interestingly enough, i´ve got betters manners than most people i use to know. what does this tell you about the educationsystem in general? not much good. btw., i googled bandrobas, but i don´t get the reference to the tolkien-universe in this case. while i´m at it, when i asked who you are, i didn´t want to know your alias, moreover i wanted to know which instance are representing, that has the authority to decide over appropriateness.
@aducksecho
@aducksecho 10 жыл бұрын
Even if you don't appreciate the principle of etiquette it still exists. Sociology, Language, and Professional Speaking still teach it to all in my culture. The Idea (of etiquette) represented is appropriate when following the cultural norm. Deviation from the norm is considered inappropriate by that culture. Simply put, it is inappropriate in regards to etiquette. BTW there is no logical reference to The Hobbit, you're right.
