Speaking after the second Ashes Test at Lords, Australia captain Pat Cummins says the controversial stumping of England skipper Johnny Bairstow was 'fair'.
Subscribe to Guardian Sport ► bit.ly/GDNSport
'You see Johnny do it all the time,' Cummins said. England skipper Ben Stokes said the while Bairstow's dismissal was 'out', he would not have wanted to win a game 'with something like that happening'. 'If I was fielding captain I would have had a real think about the spirit of the game,' Stokes said. Asked about a moment earlier in the match when Bairstow had attempted his own stumping in the same fashion, Stokes said whether or not it was the end of the over makes a 'massive difference'.

Englishman here. I don’t think Australia have done anything wrong here. It is basics. Bairstow is at fault. People need to understand the laws of cricket. Ridiculous to bring up the 2019 World Cup, though. England won that according to the rules set out previously that both teams agreed to.

It's the end of the over when the umpires call "over." The umpires were unable to call over because the ball was caught and thrown in quick succession. The ball was still live and the right decision was made. If the thrown ball missed everything and went to the boundary, it's four runs fair and square.

To be fair, that was not in Stokes' control, and it would be silly to suggest he somehow did that on purpose. Bairstow's stumping is out at the end of the day, and is up to interpretation whether it is a way you would want to win a game or not. I'm sure other teams would have kept their appeal like Australia, and some would have withdrawn or the WK wouldn't want to get a batsman out like that in the first place. As an England fan, as frustrating as it may be, at the end of the day the rules are the rules and when the ball is live you should stay in your crease..

Accept the umpires decision. Create a positive atmosphere by your own conduct and encourage others to do likewise. Show self-discipline when things go against you. There was a similar incident in a One Day match between a World 11 team and Australia in the 70's. After the final ball of the day's play, the batsman (was it Alvin Kallicharran?) left his crease to walk off before 'over' was called. He got stumped, and was OUT!

Bairstow was still in his crease when Carey threw the ball, clearly not trying to take advantage, maybe a bit careless from Johnny. However the better team won, hopefully it won't diminish the series, but I think the Headingly crowd won't ease up on the Australian team.

There were a lot more than three MCC members behaving abusively to the Australian players when they went in to lunch. If the MCC are sincere in wishing for the return of the spirit of cricket, they need to take action against everyone involved.

I think it's not wrong because Carey threw the ball just after receiving it, it's not like he waited for Jonny to talk with his partner.....also it is very much similar to stumping in case of spinners, so I personally don't think it's unfair
@andrewmartin5073
@andrewmartin5073 Жыл бұрын
Also, think of it this way. Imagine the stumping was withdrawn and England won. It'd then be a hollow victory, wouldn't it? I mean, with one securely caught catch disallowed and one obvious stumping not given. Who would want to win like that?
@macster1613

that was not a catch, you cannot touch the ground with the ball and then claim it. if ur falling, u r not in control, once u hit the ground with the ball, its not out. Bairstow is foolish to do what he did but Aus should hv called him back like msd.

@@bonaranjha the ball was not dead and over had not been called. The keeper threw the ball at the stumps as soon as he gloved it so the play for that ball was still ongoing.
