I think Aki was actually looking out for both of them by pairing them together. Denji said he can become friends with a devil and he replied he will remember that and power is a devil. So I'm assuming that they're paired together so they have someone they can relate to and be close with since neither of them have friends

Yeah power and denji are really similiar in their situations. They both have to perfrom well or they will be killed and they have no future outside of the devil hunting job. Its no surprise they have similiar life styles and hit it off so well. Their pairing up HAS to be deliberite. Spoiler: It turns out to be deliberate anyway...

not necessarily the official opinion of Tatsumaki Fujimoto, the name Makima comes from a play on "Mama". Tatsumaki Fujimoto wants to make the figure of Makima like "Mommy" in his manga, and even then it is clear how Denji is treated like that.
