When a pedestrian steps out into the road without looking it's obviously very serious. In the end this lady was very lucky! This is the second time we've looked at something like this, but different things can be learned from this. Thanks to my viewer for sending the clip in for me to use, check it out here • Video .
Please let me know what you think in the comments, and don't forget to send me your clips to analyse in future episodes. By sending me your clips, you agree to me using them. You must be the owner of any clips you send in. Thanks, Ashley

Wet weather actually makes a difference to how pedestrians behave. On a nice sunny day they are more likely to have their head up and look around. A cold wet day means you tend to pull your collar up and put your head down. Add to that less light in the winter and it is a recipe for disaster.

No it isn't because 1) the tactile pavement is a brownish colour which donates a type of pedestrian crossing is not controlled by traffic lights or a zebra crossing although you can just look at the traffic lights if there all red in this case. If the tactile pavement is red, then it donates a controlled crossing. 2) I didn't see any buttons to the left so I know it's not a controlled crossing

I work on traffic signals. A site like this if built recently would have pedestrian signals, no doubt about it, but I can tell the signals here are ancient. There’s no reason to have tactile paving here; a blind person has no way of knowing when it’s safe to cross without a tactile motor under a push button, or audible bleepers (this site wouldn’t have bleepers though).

@Candice HodgsonRiley definitely the rain and umbrella was a huge contributory factor. More concerned with keeping her head dry (and his too?), she didn't even think to lower it to look. Same happens with coats with hoods - if you just turn your head you see the inside of the hood, so you have to either lower the hood or turn your body. I've seen many people chance it crossing the road just because it's raining and they don't want to get their face or hair wet for a few seconds.

I had to brake on a manhole cover years ago on my motorbike, just like in the video (speed less than 30mph in a 30 limit, wet road, a shut throttle already in my case) the result was I hit the road so fast I was aware of the bike 'going down' AFTER I hit the road. That's how fast it happens believe it or not. Me and the bike then slid for over 30 feet. The bike in the video would have hit both of the pedestrians instead of only one of them like skittles, if it had braked hard enough to stop. Did the bike have anti-lock brakes fitted???

Agree, the rider could have positioned themselves centre right of the lane however early doors, about where the repair meets the existing tarmac would have been about right and could have meant the rider just got past the couple stepping out and not have to think about the slippery surface and also the road imperfections which were obvious in leading up to that point.

i believe the reason it's done at some roundabouts is to force you to slow down before commiting so you have to crawl up to the threshold and then check if its clear. There is a junction near me which has excellent visibility out when turning left, to the point you hardly need to brake. the problem is that can create hazards in itself where you may forget to check fully around you before leaving.

First of all, 'Look Right' was printed on the floor in front of the pedestrians. They didn't even bother checking. Why is that hedge there? It blocks the view of the driver. How can someone blindly cross the road without checking first? Even if the green man's there or not I could never rely on just that. I always check. There is one section of my road that's really bad and is blind corner. I've had a few scares with oncoming traffic on this corner and no you can't mount the verge unless you want to go down the drop off on both sides of the track. Anyway since using the horn I've managed to avoid collision with traffic and local wildlife so far (helps that deer are mor intelligent than pheasants). Point Number 1 for me: Do not move the casualty. At 1:00 in the video, the man in the blue top tries to lift her up like a sack of potatoes! In that situation, he should have ensured immediate situational safety (road blocked), made sure she was conscious, and made sure somebody had dialled emergency services. @@TomRogersOnline There were occasional visits by them in my Primary School teaching basics, mostly the recovery position and how to get even adults from their backs onto their sides properly. I had no idea you could do more with them as a child, I probably would have. Professionally all I ever did was the Emergency First Aid training and thankfully never needed to use it, but you're right, some things you just never forget. I assume it's covered in the regular First Aid training, but the training the Emergency version focuses a bit more on is how to help a fully trained First Aider, so I should be the one getting the first aid kit and any other supplies needed, initial contact with emergency services and in the case of this video in that more ideal scenario, diverting traffic around the accident safely. It's funny how often people assume I know everything a First Aider does when my training was to be as helpful of an assistant as possible. They get so let down when I tell them I was taught how to divert traffic, not set a splint. Applying pressure, proper bandage wrapping and chest compressions is the extent of my medical knowledge and I can't even use them in a professional setting anymore.

Good clip. I could write a lot on this one, it's a difficult situation as there are no pedestrian aspects on these signals, presumably not enough time or demand to fit them in. The hedge should, however, be removed. Most similar situations have the guardrails angled to improve visibility, to then have a hedge there totally negates that, it needs shifting.

Just because the limit is 40 doesn't make 40 'legal' in the sense of no wrongdoing, it could be deemed excessive speed for the conditions which IMO would have been going through a crossing like that in the wet at 40. The posted speed is the very maximum limit in best conditions, and these were far from best not just weather wise, the rider did almost everything right except a bit of road positioning further to the right of the lane which might have meant being able to avoid them stepping out.

A similar incident happened to me sort of but it was my fault entirely. No one was hot or hurt etc however. I was approaching a zebra crossing... now these videos have helped me so much in my driving that I immediately spotted two teenagers and thought they’re just going to walk out so I slowed up... and they walked straight past.... however my mind was so fully on them that I didn’t spot a gentleman on the other side (behind a lamppost in black) and I proceeded (albeit at a very slow speed) but he stepped out and I did not see him. A couple of seconds later and I would have hit him. I tried to stop and apologise and explain but I think he was too angry and carried on but oh my god it scared me to death. I hate that crossing now and almost crawl through it and I lean forward to look behind the lamppost and rails now to check. Spot on analysis, Ashley. Dont forget, bike helmets in the wet obscure visibility to the point you cant see much detail, so you often cant be sure if you’ve made eye contact (not that either pedestrian even bothered to look up), so your “even slower” comment is what I was doing in my head without verbalising it. Then when you asked what else could the biker have done, the first thing that popped into my head was use the horn, so I’m glad you did the rest of the video :) Its under used, and oft mis-understood, but just because others don’t understand doesn’t mean everyone watching here shouldn’t learn to use it more (when appropriate). Screw the “funny looks” people give you, they’re looking, and my paint ‘aint scratched. Use it early enough to be useful, and short enough to minimise (perceived) offence.

Another fantastic clip. Very informative. Motorcyclists don't tend to use the horn as much as car drivers do, as they are not nearly as loud or as impactful (too high pitched). However, in these sorts of situations I slow to a crawl and try to make a little more noise by revving the throttle in short bursts. This tends to get most people's attention. The motorcyclist could have attempted a swerve, but there wasn't really enough time to process a reaction. By the time the brain realises that the pedestrians have stepped out onto the road its too late.

Thanks Ashley, I wish I had better awareness 20 years ago! Driving in pouring rain on duel carriageway, a 9 year old running in the same direction, suddenly darted right at the pelican crossing, just as they changed from flashing amber to green.Luckly bounced off front nearside of transit van.Worst feeling ever as i approach his motionless body, car driver behind me said he was off duty policeman! Then the boy jumped up,I just hugged him! Policeman took him to hospital and home, then phone me to say he was OK but badly bruised!💜💜

Also had a similar experience. One adult and one child cyclist waiting at the kerb of a lay-by. Apparently dad said to daughter, "OK, let's go to Burger King..." at which point she set off across lay-by and A road before he finished the sentence with "... when the road's clear." Managed to bring speed down from 40 to 5, but her head still stove in the windscreen. Interestingly, dad, an army sergeant, refused to call 999; I suspect this was an example of what I believe is called "cognitive paralysis." I did the 999; after one night in hospital she was discharged with no ill effects. There was so much luck involved here. She was wearing her dad's white helmet (too big) because she had "gone off" pink, but it did the job. Another interesting point is that when the police arrived, all I could remember was a series of freeze frames which didn't seem, logically, to be in the right order or make sense. Apparently this is perfectly normal, and is in line with the results of psychological experiments about the reliability of memory.

Another great video with good learning points. Aside from the parties directly involved, the situation was made more hazardous by the vegetation on the left, behind the fence which obscured the view of the pedestrians. Local Highways Authorities / Councils really ought to consider this. From a railway perspective, I have been involved in correcting sighting issues at level crossings where the stopping distances for a train are far longer!

Hi Ashley, when you posed the question in the commentary asking what could have been done differently, my first two thoughts, in this order, were: tap the horn (it IS a communication device!) and roll off the throttle and cover the brakes (as you note, the rider was already well below the posted limit). Thank you for commentary that is appropriate to motorcyclists and I hope that this helps educate cage (car/truck) drivers a little bit into our world as riders. Cheers from Canada!

I hope none of the people blaming the pedestrian ever get old, infirm, ill or maybe just have a bad day. You can't expect humans to operate at 100% all of the time. Drivers and pedestrians have responsibility to each other. However drivers have the added responsibility of a large heavy vehicle.

As a pedestrian I see this kind of stupidity every single day. People just stepping onto the road without looking - some of them pushing child buggies! I've always been cautious crossing roads and that very caution has saved my life on 2 separate occasions. I was on a pedestrian crossing - green man lit steady and a bus on the inside lane of a dual carriageway blocking my view of the other lane so I was crossing slowly and carefully - I had taken 3-4 steps on the crossing when the green man started to flash and the driver of the car on the obscured lane took the flashing amber to mean "put your foot down!" - since my view was obscured by the bus I held back and leaned forward a bit to get a better view and it was that action that stopped me getting hit - had I just continued crossing (as was my right) he would've hit me. Only my caution saved me and that driver was 100% in the wrong. As a pedestrian you are the most vulnerable of road users so you must always pay attention and anticipate just as much as any driver or motorcyclist! You cannot (and must not) rely on others to think for you. As a boy I was in the Tufty Club and you never forget what you were taught about being safe on the road. Stop! Look! Listen!

I was once waiting at a red light on my bike, there was a pedestrian immediately to my left, a couple of feet away on the pavement waiting to cross. Just as the lights went green and I began to move off, impatience got the better of her and she chose THAT moment to step into the road. We collided (albeit softly), and what followed was a tirade of abuse directed at me from the person (who was absolutely fine) and another nearby pedestrian. The crux of the argument was that I should look where I'm going/slow down/be more considerate/apologise and all number of ridiculous things when you consider that I had all of half a second to react to a zombie pedestrian stepping into my path. I was apologetic, but took absolutely no responsibility for the incident - that's completely on her.

Great vid, another excellent analysis. From the beginning of the the video the motorcyclist is in danger from the road layout vs his speed and road position. In the left half of the M/C's lane there are a series of very large double manhole covers in the road. This may be forcing him to take up a road position in the less grippy centre (oil/fuel dropping from vehicles) of his lane and he is consistently riding on the slippery white arrows painted on the carriage way. As he starts to pass the cars to his right he needs to find a safe balance between his road position and his speed (should a driver on the right suddenly switch left into his lane). Prior to that point consideration to the use of the horn should have been made. Then as you say, what cant be seen in front of the silver van and the pedestrians on the left that can be seen means further speed reduction and further consideration of the horn (consideration because the new reduced road speed may negate the need). Common sense in hindsight, but to be human is...

Poor motorcyclist couldn't have done anything unless he had used the horn which people just don't tend to do - it's perceived more as a way of showing that you're pissed off at a fellow road user than as a warning to them. Pedestrians can be a right pain in the arse though lol. I had to literally stop today for a young couple who were crossing the road as if they had all the time in the world. My first thought when seeing this clip was that they brought it on themselves and I felt annoyed by it but after seeing the elderly woman lying in the road, I felt bad for her and am glad she's ok.

I had a similar incident a few months ago! Caught on dashcam too. Approaching stopped cars with a keep clear sign on the road. I was in the first lane, large van was in the second, he had already stopped as he wouldn't have been able to clear the keep clear sign before the stopped cars. There was still a car's gap in my lane on the other side of the keep clear sign so I had planned to take it. But as I got closer, a woman and 2 kids stepped out from in front of the van! Luckily I was slowing anyway and able to stop in time, but she obviously saw me brake hard and came over shouting aggressively at me! When I uploaded the video I had one non-driver argue that I was in the wrong, since there was a dropped curb. But I know a dropped curb isn't the same as a zebra crossing. I still had the right of way!

your summary of the incident is spot on. I agree the horn should have been used. The council should now lower the hedge on the approach side to improve visibility for both road users and pedestrians. The biker did an excellent job to stay upright and not lock the front wheel, this is exceedingly difficult in those situations. You showed a clip where a van stopped and children crossed. I have been faced with the same situation and it worries me that people will cross because they think I have stopped at a read light. Like the van I have stopped due to traffic ahead and not wanting to block the junction should the lights go red. A difficult situation but a good driver passing the stationary vehicle, will, like your pupil be aware and already taking defensive action, well done to them

I was just thinking about the use of the horn. I have double lights near me and I am watchful for when it's safe to cross both looking at the lights AND the road users. My dad always uses his horn whenever he exits my driveway and though ice never asked I now wonder if it's because of the obstruction to the right as u leave, warning any pedestrians who are maybe coming from that way. I also feel the big SLOW letters should have given the rider more awareness of potential walkers as well as the LOOK RIGHT for the pedestrians.

Technically the guy on the bike was not at fault. Green light on a pedestrian crossing. Traffic on opposite side of carriageway was stationary perhaps leading the pedestrians into a false sense of security, thinking they could cross. I’ve learnt from experience that you should expect anything at anytime. I would have prepared for the worst especially when I’m on two wheels and an emergency stop is more risky. Ashley raises a good point..... use your horn. I get lots of walkers and cyclists on the lanes around me, I give them a quick pip on the horn to make sure they know I’m there. They may think I’m being aggressive or not understand my intentions but at least they get to carry on safely.

my only comment (as a motorcyclist) is that IMHO this biker had possibly only recently passed his test as he was riding to the left rather than the right of the greasy strip. That not withstanding he did have an option to move to the right slightly (without braking) to potentially avoid the collision (which is now a part of the PTW test, swerve avoidance). There are also occasions on a bike where the throttle can be used to get you out of (as well as into) trouble. All that said the pedestrians were completely at fault here (apart from anything else her face was covered by her umbrella) and as I 'm sure others have commented WTF is that bush doing on that crossing.

Pedestrian totally at fault. However, I know I keep banging on about it but defensive riding would have probably prevented this. Firstly. Hazard ahead (pedestrian crossing with people standing on edge of pavement). Second. Weather road conditions. Third. Speed. Fourth. Use of horn. The motorcyclist stood no chance in this clip but maybe if they had applied several of the former considerations the collision may not have occurred. Glad no one was seriously hurt.

On some traffic light post doesn't have a clear good view where pedestrians can see when its safe to cross an when its safe not to cross, it can be hard to see the lights. And this is why they teach the hazard avoidance/swerve test on MOD 1 tests these days. If I'm being brutally honest & critical of the rider; 1) slower speed, Yes he was appropriate for the wet conditions, still, I would have been going slower 2) see the ped's at the crossing, anticipate and plan as if they are going to just step out 3) use the horn to make them aware of your presence 4) position yourself further to the right, just right of the central position in the lane 5) could've done a slow speed swerve, considering you have to perform a swerve manoeuvre at a minimum speed of 30mph on the MOD 1 to even pass.

Difficult to call, however, with the pedestrians being elderly. Would they have heard the horn? They are old enough to remember the green cross code, they never looked, just walked out. It happened that fast. No wonder the biker was cleared good call. Thankfully, the elderly lady was OK.. In any other conditions, going even slower can give mixed signals to a pedestrian. Thinking you are slowing down to let them cross.. Being on a motorbike, not only are you concentrating on the wet slippery roads what the camera doesn't show is vision is not always the best on a visor. Rain pending, your visor steams up, there is no wipers like a car, so you are constantly wiping your visor, this makes your vision. Not 100%. Had the biker just finished work? Tiredness, same as with cars can make a difference in your reactions and driving /riding. In my humble opinion, we can discuss all day what the biker should and could have done, however, pedestrians also have to take responsibility for their own actions and road awareness.. I remember on my lessons my instructor would always says "scan the crossing" at every single set of lights. Used to drive me crazy cause in 2 hours, you pass a LOT of traffic lights. Soon learned how valuable that habit of his was when I scanned the crossing and a woman walked out, face in phone, oblivious to the two cars hurtling towards her. Now I always scan the crossing. Granted, here, that bloody hedge wouldn't have helped, but the tip with the horn certainly will if I happen upon a similar crossing.
