I'm the cammer in this clip. I remember that I had no idea why the car in front stopped until I watched the footage back when I got home and spotted the woman running out! Like Ashley says, I was looking in my mirror too much, trying to keep moving when I should have held back. This was a couple of years ago in my first few months of car (and bus) driving. It was only recently that I remembered it (it's the closest I ever came to a crash, touchwood!) and thought I'd send it to Ashley, great to see an excellent video has come out of it. Always makes me cringe a bit watching this back but hopefully people learn from my mistakes and this helps prevent an accident somewhere! Drive safe everyone...

Also, if you’re the car behind in the right lane, it’s helpful to anticipate and leave more space. You have a better view and can aid the situation, so that the driver ahead doesn’t feel compelled to squeeze in. I know this section well. It’s very, very busy with narrow lanes. It’d be quite difficult to move into the right lane with a lot of space. I’d probably have stayed behind the bus, though sometimes they have hazard lights on and park along this stretch and that leaves you with no choice.

There may be one mitigating plea on the cammer's behalf - Whereas the camera looked to be centrally placed in the windscreen, it would have a better view (wider view) of the road ahead, and the pedestrian. The driver, being further to the right would have had a somewhat narrower angle of view, limited by the car to the right. I'd surmise that the cammer could not see the pedestrian because she would be obscured by the car to the right. My surmise would be that the cammer may not have fully known why the car to the right was braking/may not even have been aware of the pedestrian right at the time. One thing which should be clear is that in traffic, in urban streets, you cannot afford to 'bunch up' - Far better to lay back and give yourself time and space to react to situations as they unfold. Even then, with a lot going on it is still too easy to either miss a salient point, or to become fixated on one particular element out of a whole complex of elements which demand equal attention.

A few things here from my driving - In the cammers clip, I wouldn’t have moved back to lane 1 as I am already expecting the bus to be stopping. So with the traffic as it was. I would have stayed lane 2. The pedestrian is what it is. They stepped out and the cammer dealt with it, albeit with a ‘heart in their mouth’ moment. At least nothing happened. Buses - I am always anticipating them to stop and try to look for passengers, however had completely forgotten about those interior stop lights! Excellent point Ash, thanks. I need to mentally mark that one for later use. That’s a good one, especially at night. Anticipation - I get this wrong, mostly at roundabouts. I am too eager at times. Especially when I am ready to and start to go, before the person in front has even bothered to look! So I have to brake again. The amount of people who seem to arrive at a roundabout before they start to look is just incredible. They pull up and then seem to look. Thanks to the cammer for the clip 🙂👍🏻
@cargy930
@cargy930 3 жыл бұрын
Two slight problems with that: It's a waste of road space because it crams everyone into the right lane "just in case", but also if the bus doesn't need to stop, you could find yourself in the wrong lane with no way of getting back if traffic on the left closes up. Nothing wrong with pre-looking on a roundabout approach; it's very good practice. But too many people get fixated on looking and forget all about the car in front!
@kevinsmith9382
@kevinsmith9382 3 жыл бұрын
I know Ashley praises the cammer's move back to the left, but I also would have stayed in lane two. Buses stop frequently, so it's reasonable to anticipate that the bus would stop soon, and there was a lot of traffic in lane two, which would make it more difficult to move back into that lane to pass the bus. The cammer's attention was undoubtedly distracted by traffic behind him in lane two as he was looking for a gap to move out, which wouldn't happen if he'd have stayed there in the first place. There wouldn't have been any road space wasted in this instance as the cammer ended up in the same place in the queue if he'd have stayed in lane two.

The idea of looking for stopping signs on buses is unreliable. In London for example, Transport for London require its bus drivers to stop at at all recognised bus stops, so it is not necessary to press the bell on buses for them to stop at the next stop. Some passengers do press the bell but many do not and it is the pressing of the bell that activates the 'stopping signs' on buses where fitted. However of certain bus routes there are hail-and-ride sections where there are no recognised bus stops but the passenger can use the bell to request the bus to stop at any safe stopping area. These can be found often in urban residential areas or more often on rural bus routes.
@ashley_neal

So therefore in London it's easy, you know the bus is stopping!
@seraphina985
@seraphina985 2 жыл бұрын
@@ashley_neal Thing is they are also unreliable everywhere for another reason, the bus can also be hailed by a pedestrian with a hand signal too. Considering this typically happens close enough to the stop the bus itself is likely to obscure your view of it you still need to assume it could stop at any stop light or not. Then you have timing stages as well, they will stop at those if ahead of schedule regardless of the bell being pressed or being hailed from the roadside.

Great video, thanks for sending the clip video in, I’m always looking In my mirrors when driving now, just through a combination of being gone into the back of before and this one time when ide just exited a road, I looked and there was nothing there so went, the car behind me also went I assume for the same reason but about 5 second later I heard a beep go of behind me and someone came flying past at about 50 to 60mph over a raised zebra crossing and I had no idea until I saw him come flying past. I think it was the corsa behind that beeped at him, that just showed me though how much I had to look in my mirrors. I still have no idea where he came from though as u had a fairly decent view and there was most definitely no one there when I looked.

Great video as ever. One minor point- I don't like the term "stuck behind a bus/ cyclist/ horse rider/ learner etc". If you're stuck somewhere it implies you need to get out, and this attitude of I must get out and more than that have a right to go faster than I am at the moment can lead to all kinds of unsafe behaviour. As someone below pointed out you're not stuck, the bus will shortly be moving again and there's no need to overtake it (or a learner, cyclist, horse rider etc). It's nice to be able to, and all the things you said are spot on in doing that safely, but if you can't who cares?
@ashley_neal
@ashley_neal 3 жыл бұрын
You do have a point about "Stuck' behind, but for me stuck behind implies you didn't anticipate well enough when there was an opportunity to keep the flow going. When buses park at bus stops they don't always start to move again shortly as they could be waiting for a driver change, or even be ahead of time. When anything is parked you should look to negotiate round to aid the flow of all the traffic on the road. Stopping behind every bus that parks shows a lack of skill and anticipation. There is never an issue overtaking any learner, cyclist or bus when it is appropriate.

@@ashley_neal I agree with that, and unfortunately through the attitudes of some drivers (who, regrettably, probably won't be listening to you anyway) stuck has come to be used in situations where it is inappropriate. @johnmckay1423
@johnmckay1423 3 жыл бұрын
@Matt C, @ashleyneal not original video: I'd agree, but a close relative failed their test for doing this. They didn't anticipate that a bus was stopping at a bus stop in the main carriageway shortly before a roundabout they were turning left at. They had to stop behind it while other cars that (if you're being generous) had anticipated better and overtook both him and the bus (or as I suspect were being impatient at being stuck behind both a driving school car and a bus). Having made the mistake, they waited for the bus to pull away, which is exactly how I would have corrected my error (given the road was busy). I was very surprised that this was judged a major fault so they failed despite having only a couple of other minors during their test. My counsel was that "in real life" while I'd hope to anticipate better, if I hadn't my recommendation would be to do exactly what they'd done causing them to fall their test. None of the other failure were for hesitancy.
@mattc9005
@mattc9005 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnmckay1423 That does seem harsh! I can kind of see where they're coming from if the traffic speed and density were similar to those in the video though- as Ashley says the bus might be broken down or something so you do need the ability to correct your error by changing lane and overtaking the bus. Also compare the video from some time back with a learner on the fast duel carriageway, if you don't display the skills (even if you have them) to deal with a stopped bus can the examiner be confident you can deal with the other? In this video the risk from being behind the bus was low, but also the traffic speed and flow meant it was relatively easy to move out, but not as easy as planning ahead correctly, (which was another reason I personally wouldn't say stuck)- compare to the previous video on the duel carraigeway where risk of being there and difficulty of moving out are much higher.

Would guess that maybe the pedestrian was in a rush to catch the bus. Not a good move to run in front as buses can suddenly move off. Also, the cammer did not want to get held up by the bus, that was their first instinct. Really the first instinct should be safety than worrying we might not catch a bus or be held up behind one for a few moments This can be trained as a habit. Such a habit would also stop people from being desperate to get by learner drivers. Always try to be patient with buses and learners is a good rule. Or we can make the wrong split-second judgements as the cammer did here. And as Ash said anticipating ahead really helps too. It looks like the driver is a good one and learned from it. We all make mistakes from time to time.

@@scottlaaa Hi. Not sure if you are saying that to suggest the ped was not desperate to get the bus? Look closely and you will see the flash was AFTER the ped had desperately taken a step out into the road - right in front of the oncoming driver. Plus the ped waved his hand - which may have been at the bus driver to wait for him. Looks to me like the ped was desperate to run out across the path of the bus and step into the road while a car was coming. But yes, that is a good issue you raised there - people flashing can prompt people to run into dangerous situations. Even if you see someone badly wants something - flashing to let them do it is wrong - as it can prompt them to proceed without thinking of the danger. Also, look how the ped held his hand up as well - looked like he was gesturing to the bus that he wanted to get it. This does not mean the driver has seen him, though. The driver may have been looking into his mirrors as he was about to pull out.

You're absolutely spot on re staring in one mirror too long and generally failing to anticipate. I had an... interesting experience in this regard last night. Entirely my fault, but thankfully the other driver made up for my mistake. For context, I was driving to a number of places, with a passenger getting out and delivering at each place, so one can imagine the extra stress and distraction that entails. At one place, I was parked up on the right just after a T-junction on the left. So the time comes to pull away. I check my left mirror and my blind spot over my shoulder, nothing. I check my interior mirror and ahead, nothing. I then see in my peripheral vision someone walking their dog on the pavement out of my left window - totally unimportant, but it distracted me, so I check my interior mirror and ahead again. Still nothing. So I signal and start pulling away while watching to the left, and I move about a foot before suddenly putting the brakes on because now there's a van to my left. I realised they must have turned out of the side road as they were signalling left, and I could only conclude that the time between my original blind spot check and moving off - a few seconds - was long enough for the van to drive up to the main road, appear in my blind spot and pull out - indeed, the lesson here is that the correct response to being distracted by the dog walker would be to do **all** my observations again, not just the one I was just doing. Fortunately, and thankfully, the van driver saw me, stopped, and let me go first, but it could have easily ended differently. They definitely made the issue a non-issue, as you like to put it!

There's a similar scenario to this that I see quite often on motorways and dual-carriageways, where a driver intends to pass a slower vehicle (van or truck in particular because they obstruct the view ahead) and doesn't pull out soon enough. They get so close to the slower vehicle that they can't see ahead and change lane sharply only to find that the presumed space has disappeared due to slowing traffic. As you say, it's poor planning, fixating on the gaps in the next lane and yes, sometimes it's due to gap-closers. This NASCAR/F1 trick just doesn't work on motorways.

I just leave a generous distance in general, and especially for the more risky vehicles like tractors, trailers, lorries, Learners, buses etc. Saw someone tailgate a Learner in front of me, and the erratic flashing of the brake lights on them. If you're going to tailgate a learner, what do you expect but to have to brake irregularly? You're only encouraging them to drive slower. They are going to be constantly checking their central mirror, so they are likely to lose focus on how smoothly they press the pedals.

In Adelaide, South Australia, the buses don't have back windows, so we cant see the 'stop' light up. Perhaps buses should have a light on the back that lights up when the bus is going to make a stop to let passengers off. They are often blue (or were when I last caught a bus here), so if a blue light is on in the back of the bus, cars know it will be stopping at the next stop, and change lanes early if possible. Not much can be done about picking up passengers, in regards to early notice.

@alane7903
@alane7903 3 жыл бұрын
The pedestrian did not make any mistake. Firstly, pedestrians have a right to be there and to cross (car drivers are there by licence); secondly there is no test for being a pedestrian, so no rule-set that they must learn and obey (yes, the HC has recommendations for them, but this is not a rule-set they are required to learn and pass a test on, unlike car drivers); thirdly, there is no 'jay-walking' law in the UK (and long may that situation continue). It is entirely up to those bringing the danger to the roads, to cope with pedestrians exercising their right to cross. A pedestrian crossing to the bus-stop was entirely predictable and no motor vehicle driver/rider should have been unprepared for this.

My question is, even tho the dashcam picked up on the pedestrian. Could the driver see it or would the white car be blocking it along with with A piller. I don't think in my eyes that he could see this pedestrian due to the fact just how close he was to the white car. If he stayed back maybe it would have given himself a better view. Either way, the pedestrian made this situation dangerous & if that white car wasn't paying attention which unfortunately is quite common. It would have been more serious, i didn't see the pedestrian until the last second due to what he's wearing. This could have been avoided with a bigger space cushion. Then checking your mirrors and anticipating the bus is gonna stop.

Good tip about the bus “Stopping” light. Wouldn’t it be useful if that light was properly repeated on the rear of buses to tell following traffic that it is about to use the next stop? Given the weight of traffic (reasonable, flowing) and other circumstances (dark, bus ahead) in the cammer clip I don’t think I’d have moved to the left at that point in those circumstances. It didn’t help anyone else and just made it more difficult for the cammer. And finally, let’s have a word about the pedestrian. The current official policy seems to be that pedestrians are never in the wrong no matter how daft their actions, and this was particularly daft. We all need to be aware of that our actions have potential serious consequences, whether we are walking, riding or driving.

If they were killed , no fault would have been ascribed to driver of white car . A friend of mine hit a 3 year old boy who ran out in front of him from between two parked cars ( he was not speeding , there was a line of cars along the road ; he had no chance to stop ) full on police investigation found my friend blameless ; even the boy;s parents agreed . Also, if you are a pedestrian don't be a dick... use the provided crossings. This doesn't change anything for drivers that must anticipate these things but far too many people walking out in the road right next to a crossing - doesn't matter the type of crossing either - getting far too common place these days and risking the chance of getting hit by a car just to get the bus or to cross the road saving 3 minutes just isn't worth it! In this case, buses have timetables, plan your journey... from your mobile... if you miss the bus or might be missing the bus, just get the next one. They are either frequent enough that it isn't too inconvenient or you get there extra early to make sure you get it.
