I don't think the criticism of the car at the lights is entirely justified. I thnk it is a systemic problem with UK lights, that appear 'designed' to catch motorists at the end of a phase. The lights did not offer the full 3 seconds of amber, that was 2.9s (they can be as low as 2.75s, by law). That's not enough in a 40mph zone. According to the Highway Code the stopping distance at 40mph is 36m, which would be a stopping time of 4 seconds. The car was breaking in anticipation of a change, and came off the brakes when they committed, which was when the lights were still amber. To stop within 3 seconds, AT MAXIMUM BRAKING (0.5g, this being the MoT minimum requirement, there is no requirement for older cars to meet that) means a deceleration of (9.81m/s/s)*(0.5)*3s = 14.7m/s, which is 32mph, and that is MAXIMUM breaking, not reasonable and fair. They say double the stopping time for being in the wet, so that is now 16mph. So, I ask, is it reasonable to slow down to 32mph before lights in a 40 zone (let alone 16mph in the wet) on the approach to traffic lights, or might that cause a crash? Amber should be at least 4 seconds, if not 5. The UK stands as an extreme for short amber intervals in countries around the world, and most red light infractions are people right at the very end of the cycle, not flagrant disregard of it.

The parking situation over there is undesirable at best. Look at the white van to the right, which is VERY tight between the lines. It's the reason why the black tiny Peugeot next to it also is parked tightly against the white line or they would not have been able to exit the vehicle. 10 inches per spot and you'd have a friendly parking zone where people have room to park.

My top tip for parking in a carpark. 1) ALWAYS reverse in, or drive two through if safe. 2) if you can, park on the edge of the carpark 3) if you can park at the end of a row leaving the drivers door clear. 4) always check for restrictions on time 5) if at all possible park on a nearby street and walk in (n/a for supermarkets).

Yep, I get that too. My theory is that they assume (correctly) that you value your car because you've parked it out of the way. So, they feel that their car will be safer parked right next to someone who values their car. Which would mean that they too must value their own car. Which makes no sense because if they did, they'd park it out of the way on its own as you have. So ultimately - they are indeed a numpty.

Yep, me in 1976. I used to go out on Sundays in my Vauxhall Viva (HB Deluxe!) out on the A4 or the road to Faringdon. I would offer to take people anywhere just to drive. Now, I only drive if I have to, even though my skills are still excellent (RoSPA trained, skid-pan tested, advanced tuition from Thames Valley's top traffic cop). People are moronic and incompetent.

10:19 im glad you mentioned about the hatched markings in that clip. Too many people seem to think you must stay out if them. I've done what you did and queued in the hatched markings before a turn lane before and then have had people carry on past down the straight lane only to try to turn into the lane when it actually opens. Of course it's easily corrected and i just let them in, but people with this misunderstanding love to block active lanes.

I think it's people not knowing / realising there is a difference between broken and solid hatchings. People don't used broken hatched areas where it would make sense to, but then sail across solid ones where they shouldn't.

That is some awful -parking- abandonment at the end but a very common sight of “That’ll do” and without car park patrols they get away with it. If anyone is wondering why they didn’t park in a disabled bay. It could be a recent disability and they are still waiting on a blue badge. It can take up to 12 weeks and does require a lot of evidence to support the application. Until then, people have to use standard bays. An application for a family member took longer as we had to appeal the original decline decision

it could also be a borrowed car, or all the disabled bays may already be in use. or it could even be possible that they are using the chair as a trolley, and the disabled person isn't with them.

Of course you need to make sure the blue badge is put into the borrowed car which I have forgotten to do before for the family member mentioned earlier. Using the wheelchair for the shopping is a strong possibility

I just passed on Tuesday with 1 fault on my first attempt. Still have lots to improve on but I've already had a couple of moments driving on my own where your advice has helped me with planning the best flow for everyone well in advance, which also makes it a lot less stressful.

Getting stuck like that in a car park with penalty charges would make me come over all litigious. It was actually easier to get it straight from that position. No idea how he ended up like that. And that’s from someone who isn’t great at parking and can take an adjustment or two to get it right. Turns out I don’t need to bother…. Most car park regulations will say you need to park in a bay between the lines. I think you’d be well within your rights to chuck any costs this guy’s way. Of course we’re forgetting that the world revolves solely around these people, so we have to take that into account too…

I remember when I was younger and more contentious, I thought it would be a great thing to have a tow truck and contract to our US malls with their acres big car parks, and simply move any improperly parked car so it was properly parked. then go over the loudspeakers and announce to the owner of said car that for a small fee, I'd tell them where I put it.

When he looked back and saw the space on the other side, why not move the car to be tight against the other border? The car to his left is facing away, so it's passenger-side to passenger-side there and the driver could get in and move the car if a passenger wants to get in. Stupidity on that level will never be fixed.

At around 9:50 I hate it when that happens. Namely, you are on a roundabout and have priority and a vehicle approaching the roundabout approaches at a speed that quite reasonably causes you doubt as to whether it's going to give you priority. So to be prudent, you slow down just to make sure and in the process, this delays everyone. I've even had the other driver give me a "Hurry up" signal in this type of scenerio. Well driver, had you approached the roundabout at a more reasonable speed so I could be more sure of your intentions, I would have been out of your path sooner.

I see bad parking quite a lot as a padestrain. 2 years ago I went up to Sainsbury's up Bentley Bridge Retail Park in Wolverhampton to get some stuff with my mum and my step dad, we was walking accross the car park and this car decided to reverse out the parking bay without using their mirrors! Reversing out of parking spots can be hazardous (not shown in this video, maybe something to cover later?), it is best to reverse into a parking space and drive forward out of the space, better visibility when emerging into traffic. The actions of pedestrians in car park also needs to be improved at times, it is a hazardous area so children should be controlled, and if you can see a car backing out but can't see the driver then they are blind and should be slow but make sure they see you before walking behind them for your own sake (not saying this was the case in your example). I had an incident where I didn't follow my own advise and had to reverse out of a spot, van along side so I was partially blind, and coming out slowly, just caught a glimpse of something in my mirror and hit the brakes, a young child running down the line of cars who was shorter than the bottom of the rear window so couldn't be seen except when they passed the gap between the cars, never hit them but it was close. A woman walking the other way then gave the mother of the child a serious lecture on looking after her kids.

FWIW, my missus has been in hospital and, as a result, I spent the week haunting the hospital car park and the amount of poorly parked cars was just astounding. Literally, 1 in 5 cars were either parked with their wheels on/over the lines of the bay, parked diagonally or parked straddling 2 bays. I genuinely wonder what's happened to people's attitude to driving over the last 20 years or so.

@@TisAndrew”nothing wrong with it” other than it’s against the law in this case because that pavement isn’t a shared cycle path. Shared cycle paths work because they are marked so pedestrians are expecting cyclists thus less likely to do certain actions such as suddenly changing direction without a quick scan. They are also supposed to be well lit and not have any obstructions you might typically get on pavements (especially residential areas, rubbish bins etc).

At around 10:15, I would absolutely do the exact same thing when right turning traffic is backed up past the actual start of the right turn lane. Namely, turn early into the hatched area that's bounded by broken lines, so that I'm clear of through traffic as early as possible. I have to say, there are many junctions where this type of scenerio is a regular thing that I wonder why the authorities don't reconfigure the setup so that the actual right turn lane officially starts further back.

the road I live on turns across traffic off a 4 lane highway, and happens to have a wide median (central reservation for the non-bilingual brits) I tend to get into the central reservation a good distance before the turn, so I can slow gently without inconveniencing the poor sods who want to overtake the guy who's been toddling along at the head of the queue, and is now off to the races.

Some while ago I was waiting for the tutor to unlock the door for a silversmithing class. The car park was nearly full, and part of it was reserved for the sports hall. There were two next together, slightly difficult parking spaces left. A woman with a huge people carrier tried parking. First reversing. Nope. Forward. Nope. Still taking up two places. Then she tried parking on the sports hall spaces. She got moved by the parking attendant. She was told to park next to other cars, in the correct space. Where she parked right next to the driver's side, leaving them no space to get in. It certainly made waiting more interesting.

Wrt that first clip, always be aware that the view the driver in front has is not the same view you have. They may be able to see around the bend even when you can’t. Sometimes it works the other way too. You may very well have a better view ahead than the car in front.

Unfortunately I see it as well as the driver coming the other direction to find a vehicle overtaking badly. The worst one was a couple of months ago where zi was greeted by a van overtaking a cyclist over the crest of a hill on a blind corner. Thankfully my speed was already slow due to the road but many don’t slow down All they were doing was rushing to the traffic lights less than a minute down the road which had a queue of traffic anyway 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦‍♂️ I dont know what goes through some peoples heads sometimes for them to think these are sensible places to overtake. All they are doing is putting other people lives in danger, especially if they swerve to avoid a head on and take out the cyclist(s) they are passing

10.15 Yes Ashley. A lot of motorists think that to be driving over or on these arears is illegal (the ones with the broken lines) but having just recently seen a clip with a right turn T junction I commented that the driver should have been on these as not all right turns will have a little space without the diaganal lines, so you should be out to the second line which in turn gives those following the vehicle behind you the vision that a car in front of the que is making a right turn.

This reminds me, I thought I had seen everything in car parks from dodgy parking to donuts with shoppers around. Until last week that was I saw a car reverse across 3 bays and back up to be close to the trolley bay. You are reading this right, the car was at a 90 degree angle to what it should be taking up three parking spaces. The driver then gets out, opens the rear door to remove a basket and inside was some food, a flask and some cups. Him and his passenger (going to assume wife but never assume anything) decided to have a picnic After that, I am not so sure if I will ever see everything

I remember reading decades ago in a motoring magazine, an article about motorways. This was at the time most / all motorways didn't have a barrier on the central reservation. A family in a Ford Zephyr actually stopped to have a picnic on the central reservation! Police officer pulls up to investigate and this whole family is there, complete with deck chairs, tea and sandwiches. The driver said "I thought this would be a convenient place to stop"!

Now that is just God awful parking. The driver just didn't care. Also, with the cyclist who went on the pavement, if he had dismounted, then he could have done that to not wait at the lights. It may be slower, yes, but least it's quicker than waiting a few minutes. This reminds me of one of the Mr Bean episodes where a cyclist dismounts to cross a red light because he is legally a pedestrian, so Mr. Bean exits his car and pushed it. Good thing it was a Mini Cooper.

I would agree, generally, but amend your saying; "Good road users follow the rules unless it is demonstrably unsafe to do so". I say this regarding cyclists. There are certain intersections or obstacles that I encounter where it is much safer to use the sidewalk or otherwise to remain safe. This does not automatically mean that you are raising the risk for others to the same degree or at all. It is circumstantial.

To get in and out of my car I have to open the door at quite a wide angle for better clearance because I cannot turn my foot to get between the front of the driver's seat and front of the door opening. As a result I always try to park at the end of a row or in an empty area of the car park, because people do this ALL the time. My current car is a hatchback, which isn't too bad, but try and imagine what it was like for me when I had an MX5 with it's long doors! Sometimes I had to fold the roof down so I could stand up to get out ... 😆

Remember though, every badly parked car is NOT out on the road. Bonus. 10:30 I once had a learner fail her test for NOT driving onto a hatched area. Having booked her test for morning peak, driving away from the town centre she was asked to turn right. Junction has a small protected turn area, for one car, plus a bit of hatching. One car already waiting. By waiting in the main carriageway, she blocked the traffic leaving town, resulting in many horn parps, and angry shouting when she did eventually move into the protected area. Examiner took the view that she had unnecessarily inconvenienced others, so got a serious fault. He said, she should have used the hatched area. We had already discussed this, and used it on a lesson, at this very junction. Pressure of a test. Always scan for debris in hatched areas, no need to collect a puncture, or at higher speeds, throw stuff at others.

That last one really infuriated me. It's like, once you've parked, how do you not think "Oh, I might struggle getting myself in/out here. One thought on the hashed area with a broken outer border (10:15) - if its ok to go into that area just to keep traffic flowing - why have those hashed areas at all? I know I am asking for retaliation from some people on this issue where they will think its ok. My son was taught it was ok to do this too when he was learning to drive (the hashed area was on a 40mph stretch of road so the instructor said it was better to get in the hashed area earlier to reduce braking in the main 40mph lane). I was taught (a long long time ago) not go in hashed area unless I really needed to (and I mean "really" - aiding traffic flow does not count as "really" to me). I often see people go into hashed areas, not turn right but go straight on simply to jump a few cars. Too many people ignore that there is a reason for broken hashed areas.

At around 8:11, ah yes the good old "I'm turning right up ahead, I'm not really part of this waiting queue". As tempting as that is, there's a risk of: 1. Vehicle emerging left out of the side street you are going for 2. Pedestrians crossing and not expecting a vehicle on the wrong side of the road 3. A vehicle in the queue you are bypassing suddenly deciding to pull out to perform the same manoeuvre and straight into your path without checking.

I made a comment to the driver that they hadn't given me much room to get in, and with a bit of reluctance the driver then parked their car correctly. 😂

I have just been round my local aldi's . And it was extremely busy But the news on TV said . Don't venture out unless it is absolutely necessary . Because of the snowfall during the night . 12:10 I believe cyclists should not stop at red light when it's safe to do so. Going on the pavement brings no harm to pedestrians as cycling is much slower than driving. Additionally on a bike you have a much better visibility than in a car and know exactly when it's safe to do such things. The real underlying problem here is that cyclists should not be forced to mix with cars, they should have a dedicated infrastructure and rules.

Why must people park so close? A few years ago we were in the Channel Islands and went to this museum. It had just opened and we were the first car in the car park. We came out a couple of hours later, there was only about half a dozen cars were parked. Buy of cause there was one right next to me.

I do the very same on hatches at Junction Street here in Carlisle next to Kwik-Fit. It splits in to two lanes, if you don't use the hatched area, it causes obstruction to the left turn lane.

Rather than the other way round where you glance and see further back, but have either look out your window or kinda slam your head down and backwards.

@13:52 this situation happened to me once, I always try to park far away in where it is empty, also the extra walk is always good for you. I parked just like the Clio as I don't have a passenger I left extra room on the driver's side, am a big guy so getting in and out is a squeeze. A guy parked just like the Nissan did, both me and him came to our cars at the same time, I said "Hello, would you mind driving off first as I don't have much room to get in" his reply "A big 4x4 parked next me, so I had to park close". I went into the shop in and out in about 5 mins, had view of the car park, no car parked next to him the whole time.

I drive down the road in your first clip most days, I’ve seen a lot of cars overtaking cyclists on the bends, I put it down to impatience. I cringe when I see another car coming the opposite way. I had it once where the cyclist was in front, car was behind me and I couldn’t overtake because of the bends. The car behind decided to overtake, I slowed down to create a bigger cap between me and the cyclist, the car attempting to overtake had to pull into the gap because a car was coming round the bend in the opposite direction

At around 5:41 re Don't ever be scared to use cruise control. Personally i don't like using it at all. Tried it in North America ages ago and it just felt too weird for me. Never used it again. I like being able to use minor adjustments in throttle applications and i feel it keeps me more alert. I also feel more in control that way. Yes I know there are Plus and Minus buttons to increment or decrement speed but i just couldn't feel comfortable with the whole system. I'm also curious to know: How does cruise control work in a manual car if you need to change gear, either up or down? I only tried it in North America in an automatic.

It varies. All cars disengage it if you declutch and many (mine, for example) resume once you re-engage the clutch, some you need to press resume again. It actually works fine like with manuals as it's something you only really use in cruise where you mainly leave it in one gear anyway. It is better in autos as you just punch "resume" to get back to the limit after passing through a restriction. Cruise seems very "marmite" - people love it or hate it. I suspect your typical b road commuter will use/like it less than someone doing lots of motorway miles. I didn't like it at first until I learned how/when to use it. Now I wouldn't choose a car without. I also like the limit mode.

I only use the cruise control in average speed camera enforcement areas, set the speed using the GPS and relax and not worry about the cameras. I just don't really trust them fully, I had one run away on me in the past in town, the car just started accelerating and when I hit the brakes and then released them it just engaged again and off it went, really put me off them.

Hi Ashley - I had a question which I'm hoping you would give me your opinions on? Blackbox or Telematics Insurance? Are these policies actually more dangerous than a normal policy? My thoughts behind it are the following; - As a telematics insurance driver, my policy rates me on a traffic light system for each week of driving. If I break harshly or accellerate harshly it will mark me down and if I get 3x RED weeks in a 3 months period then they cancel my policy. My question here is how does this make driving safer? If we need to take evassive action by emergency stop or slamming on the breaks to prevent hitting another car (because of their own driving skills) it would naturally negitiviely impact us so more than likely we'd second guess our own choices we make to prevent our policies from being cancelled. Thus meaning we're not infact safer, but more danergous due to chasing our good score. - A second example, the road speedlimit shows 60mph but the telematics thinks the road if 40 MPH - we will be forced to drive at 40mph to prevent a bad score, meaning we put other people into danger because if we go the speedlimit, they will cancel our insurance. There's loads of examples, but I'd love to hear you thoughts on blackbox insurance and should I, a driver of 1 year and month potentially pay an extra £200 per month for a normal policy?

The most important traffic rule for cyclists is “don’t get dead”. At 12:11, I have done this plenty of times. This is kind of the opposite of impatient, you have to go slowly because you have to look out for pedestrians, and then you have to give way to cars when rejoining. This usually costs you a lot of time. Did you notice the parked cars just after the intersection? Waiting for green and then going is a good way to get doored, and then die. You don’t do it if you can at all avoid it. It is almost as stupid as outright blasting through a red light.

As for the cyclist on the pavement. I seem to recall Ashley being less concerned about it when they did it to aid the flow of car drivers (eg. Learning Point 373) and also in other videos where he was unconcerned about it from a safety point of view. Thought experiment: would this have even made it into the video if the cyclist in question had been on the pavement throughout the whole clip?

Have mixed feelings about cyclists riding on pavements, or even jumping red lights. If they do it in a considerate manner and ensure it is 100% safe is it not helping the flow of traffic? Probably safer than doing the right thing, with all those inpatient drivers behind who would do almost everything to get to the other side in that one green light cycle. And in heavy traffic the 1.5m rule is rarely obeyed when overtaking a cyclist... Of course not talking about all those reckless cyclists out there who ignore the rules entirely. Seen way too many of those, unfortunately.

@@p.a.1675 ​ As someone else noted further down the comments, the horse rider who briefly used the pavement to aid the flow of vehicular traffic did not warrant so much as a finger-wagging, whereas the cyclist who did the same to help his own flow was the subject of a lecture. It's the psychology of this that interests me. For what it's worth, I do obey the rules while cycling, but have noticed something in myself as a driver that I think is worth exploring. Having spent the last almost 50 years working hard to modify my behaviour to be less selfish and more socially acceptable, I think I'm doing rather well... Until some ne'er-do-well on a £50 bike blows through a red light in front of me without a care in the world. And boy does he remind me of my unredeemed inner nature and the thin veneer of respectability behind which it is hidden. So I retreat to the false comfort of my tribe, and he to his, from where we throw rocks at one another to avoid doing battle with the demons within.
