Im with you on food delivery and manicures and pedicures. Pads and tampons. Menstrual cup and period underwear are what I use. I dont use a dish rack because I just let my dishes sit there adding visual clutter. Fabric softner, eye lash curler. Make upbtemover products. I'm so on edge about organic (mainly produce)and cagecfree eggs..I just don't know if it's worth it. Benefit vs cost. I buy almond milk and that is kind of my expensive item for groceries.

I save serviettes from restaurants that I never use anyway and bring them home. We don’t use paper towels, we just use a bunch of tea towels, but if there’s a particularly awful mess that we don’t really want to use a tea towel for, those disposable serviettes can wipe it up and be chucked, so at least they got used

You spoke of not buying things on vacation. I learned this lesson as well. What I decided to do instead is to support local artists- especially of artwork of the scenery of where you are-some of it is so beautiful. And I like supporting local jewelry makers instead to help boost the economy.

Totally agree, our favorite is to have an artwork piece on the wall or a small jewelry piece to wear, from a local artist, so that we enjoy the memory every day.

I also love and prefer buying type of artwork of local sceneries as memorabilia. In 2019 I bought a pencil drawing of Ankar What in Cambodia. It travels light and didn't damage in my luggage. I came home and took it to the framers, so now it hangs in out home.

I hear your point with saving money using an Airbnb vs a hotel but there have been so many occasions for me that for a short 2 night stay a hotel wound up being cheaper because of the high cleaning and service fees that some Airbnb’s charge. It really varies by city but sometimes the added Airbnb fees from a host can negate the savings.

The Airbnb fees are high. If it is for a short stay hotel are better .If you fly can be an airport transport to the hotel. Airbnb can be out of the way so you need a taxi.

I have never had a positive experience with Air BnB… so many added fees and issues with things not being as described. I used to get a gel manicure every 4-6 weeks until COVID hit and I realized I really didn't NEED it. It was a luxury purchase that I enjoyed, but I also found other experiences I'd rather spend my money on. Now, I only get a mani/pedi if I'm going on vacation or for a special event. That's saving me several hundred dollars a year. It truly does add up!

I’m in a travel Facebook group and everyday there are horror stories of people’s Airbnb’s being cancelled at the last minute and they are stranded. Not to mention safety concerns, room not looking like pictures, and cleaning fees. I will never book one. Hotels have sales if you sign up for the emails. Also use credit cards for travel points for free stays. I only go to the nail salon for dip for a vacation. That guarantees my nail polish will last 3 weeks during a vacation. It also gives me length that I can never grow on my own which looks pretty in my vacation pictures.

We don’t buy plastic wrap, ziplock bags or paper towels. We use reusable ziplock bags like Stasher, rags and tea towels that we just wash with our towels, and sometimes beeswax wraps in place of plastic wrap (or glass containers and jars usually eliminate the need). I thought this was pretty mainstream by now, but our friends recently were shocked to hear we don’t buy paper towels. This also has helped to greatly reduce the amount of trash we have every week!

I started meal planning for the week and it saves quite a bit of money. We plan out the week on Sunday and do the grocery shop that day, so we only buy the ingredients on the list. Ashlynne I have followed you for so long, and very inspired by you! I have to say that I encourage you to do research into Airbnb's practices and how Airbnb is negatively impacting the housing market and displacing families around the world. I also used to use Airbnb frequently (especially abroad) but i encourage you to revisit the concept of hotels (which have recently upped their standards + offers to compete with Airbnb) because a medium-to-nice one will typically have a lot of access to the same experiences (wine tasting, hikes, boat trips, etc depending on where you are) and frequently offer discounts when booking through them as well, and they are statistically significantly safer, even in areas where you may want to be extra diligent. Just some food for thought!! Airbnb is hurting the housing+renting market and there is no regulation, which allows hosts to lie about services, availability, cleanliness, and even ownership. In Greece I stayed in an Airbnb that was "place all to yourself" SUPPOSEDLY and the landlord entered with their own key during my stay duration, without announcing themselves, and when I asked them politely to leave they said that they "saw I was in the shower" and thought they could get away with "dropping off some more towels" and then when I asked to see the towels they supposedly brought they did not produce any and said they "must have left them in the car" and when I said ok I will accompany you to the car to retrieve them he got in the car and sped away leaving me standing in the driveway. I immediately moved to a hotel nearby and reported him. Nothing was done! I was not refunded ANYTHING even though I had 11 days left in my stay. I've seen many many reports of similar (and WORSE) experiences. Please for your own safety and general wellbeing I encourage you to consider revisiting your view of hotels as viable options :)

I love hearing different perspectives on things that are meaningful to one person and not to another. I collect thimbles, so I always seek them out when we're holidaying. But I don't wear makeup because of allergies, so I also don't need a whole skin care routine thing going on. When we had a season of almost no income, we learnt the true difference between 'need' and 'want' and what was worth investing our limited resources into. We also learnt to borrow, do ourselves, and say 'no', and be OK with saying no. It's also important to learn to graciously receive - not something we're really taught, especially in the church, that teaches us to give and reach out. Sometimes we need to take in and be OK with that too.
@lucemills36882 жыл бұрын
If you don't like doing a full-on skincare routine, you should consider switching up your makeup routine to a skincare routine. I don't know if you have insecurities about going out with a face without makeup but, personally, it just makes me feel more natural, more myself, self-confident, happy and clean!

To add to the not buying food delivery.. A lot of the services take 33% of the total purchase, which is a lot for local businesses. It is more supportive for them to pick up. When we were shut down, it made sense to do delivery because it allowed local restaurants to remain open and have income coming in. Now we pick up on the rare occasion we eat out.

#1 stock, I make my own. I have a couple of containers in the fridge I feed with scraps and every couple of weeks I make a chicken or fish stock. I grow my own little tomato plants, costs $30 a year and pretty unlimited. Also canadian food standards are such that most food is equivalent to American organic, so i only buy organic celery etc. And only buying non imported foods 99% of the time is a massive savings. Bulk foods for seeds, grains and the like. But the biggest savings of all is having a couple of premium credit cards and using and paying them off each month to pay things like grocery or hydro. This gets me hundreds and hundreds of points or cash back for dining out, gas etc. Also buying just two or three occasion wear items that I can mix and match or dress up with accessories. I have a winter LBD and a summer LBD and between leggings, shoes, jewelry and layering, I haven't needed a new dress in 10 years.

Please be mindful of where you choose to stay in AirBNBs, they are pushing locals and essential workers out of the housing market, especially in many European cities. Whilst a price of 60EUR a night might seem like a bargain for a city centre room to you, its far more than locals can afford as a monthly rent and landlords will rent them to whatever makes more profit. Most the houses in my street are unoccupied for much of the year until the summer or there is an event on. Meanwhile workers such as nurses who work at the hospital at the end of the road are having to live further and further out to find affordable accomodation, when there is limited public transport at night and no parking, putting their safety at risk.

I too don't buy souvenirs as often as I used to, but I think the pandemic kind of helped me to naturally kick that habit as I haven't taken as many vacations since the start of post-COVID times 😄

Something to keep in mind by staying in Airbnb's is that a lot of times it is forcing people who actually live in the area out of home ownership. I only stay in Airbnb's that I'm renting a room from someone in their actual home or maybe their MIL suite or something like that.
@annan.32832 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a security concern staying in a house with a stranger. Plus I want my privacy and personal space.
@Jamie-jf5uz2 жыл бұрын
@@annan.3283 Not really, if you're staying in a 5 star Airbnb with thousands of positive reviews. Plus, I always bring a door stopper for the inside door, just in case. Though I've never actually needed it. I don't like the idea of staying in an Airbnb that increases costs of rent and home ownership and negatively impacts the people who actually live in those cities.

I'm a minimalist too but I will not minimize the importance of skin care. It is an investment of time, energy more than money and it is worth. Aging is beautiful but I don't think anyone would want to crack and accelerate the process. Korean skin care (where I live) is way cheaper than European/American brands and 15 years more advanced in R&D. I don't splurge on skin care meaning I don't buy La Mer but I do not scrimp. I religiously cleanse, tone, moisturize and sunblock all the time even indoors! People are floored when I say my age. They think I am at least 15 years younger than I truly am.

I only wash my face one or two times a day. I have fairly oily skin. But sometimes I needed to exfoliate. So, I have that. And a big £9 tub of Hydromol. This is because a women who is in her 90's at the care home I work - looks 20 years younger lmao! But I agree. Too much it actually makes my face worse.

Your videos are so refreshing compared to all the consumerism of the world. Thank you! I love getting kids meals when I go to fast food places!

My POV, being a minimalist is about quality items and quality experiences over quantity, meaningless items. It’s not about being cheap or saving money 💰as i’m still spending alot as im buying investment pieces.

I like using skincare products. But sometimes things you buy don’t work for you. I still use all of them and only then buy new products. Even if I don’t really like them

Getting your nails done is so expensive. It's literally about the same price as getting your hair done at the salon (getting a color put in or highlights along with a trim). I would rather spend that money on my hair than my nails.

I have food delivery it is the whole weeks worth of food packages of breakfast lunch and dinner. I work away from home leaving at 5 am and getting back after 8 pm five days a week and then to shop and cook on top of this would mean I didn’t get the washing done and hung ready to fold and load into car in the morning and shower and have eight hours sleep not possible

Here, we live half of the year without fridge. We heat our house with wood. We grow the majority of our vegetable and fruits. And I make my own beauty products. We save money and it's better for the planet 😊

I personally think that buying organics is a investment for the future health. specially where I live (Brasil), where everywhere there are pesticides in food. So when I can I buy organic for the sake of my health.

I love this video! Such great tips. Something I have done to save money is not online shopping and waiting at least 24 hours before buying the item at the store. I have bought too many things instantly online and regretted it later. So if there is something I really want, I wait until I can go to the store to buy it. Many times, I end up not even buying what I wanted because I don’t want to go to the store and realize I don’t need it haha.

That is amazing, I always thought I was weird, I don't do any of those things either. I live in Australia, we decorate our homes and make them nice but I did not realize that people changed their decor with the seasons until I started watching youtube. The only time we add decorations is at Christmas time. The blanket ladder seems like an American idea as well. Thanks for sharing, Ashlynne, I always enjoy your content.

I use airbnb every time I travel. Way cheaper and you can also cook so save more money than eating out.
@deedsh62802 жыл бұрын
I've never been one to order beverages when eating out, and people thought it was odd. It's nice to know others also skip the huge mark up and drink water! The only one that I've cut way back on, (but can't get rid of), is seasonal changes. Not full out, but my autumn stuff goes out Labor Day -Thanksgiving, so it's actually enjoyed longer than the Christmas holiday. A few small tradeouts for spring, and summer. I appreciate that you are so open to all ways of being intentional. Thank you for sharing your ideas!

If you want good skincare actives at a MUCH lower price try The Ordinary and The Inky list. They have really simple effective products at a fraction of the cost and are easily accessible. And dont forget the importance if sunscreen daily as the last step of your skincare. Btw i love your channel and content.

I try not to buy like groceries I don’t need. For example an excessive amount of caffeinated drinks or sugary drinks. I do not go an cut my hair. I have been at it for almost 6 month and couldn’t be happier. I stop online shopping. It was so hard. And buying clothes. I’m getting marry in 19 days and I have to declutter my closet again because I was gifted clothes. I don’t buy jewelry I won’t wear. I have a lot of stainless steel, silver, gold jewelry but learn I don’t wear them so I stop buying that. Dresses. I only own 5 dresses and are perfect for summer and going out to different places and they have pockets.

When I turned 40, I developed allergies to nearly ALL make-up! So I stopped wearing it! No make-up also means no fancy skin care products! (I use Trader Joe's facial lotion - affordable and it works great for me!) I do spend money on mani-pedi's (I believe I went to the salon ONCE last summer!)

The #1 thing I don’t do to save money: social media. I have a KZbin account and watch about 4 channels-none of which promote consumerism. That’s it. No Instagram, TikTok, no Facebook, etc. Out of sight, out of mind. No comparison. No shopping or consumption triggers. No subtle messaging or pressure. No mindless scrolling that always leads to mindless spending. Honestly, dumping as much social media as possible has made THE BIGGEST difference in spending habits and levels of contentment. Highly recommend.
@lovingsunshine35152 жыл бұрын
I find that KZbin vbloggers are becoming just as bad in my opinion. When I watch cleaning and organizing videos, majority of them use expensive matching organizers, bins, jars, etc. A lot of them replace old jars that are functional with a matchy ones. Ashlyn actually did this in one of her kitchen organizing videos. So I find that KZbin is just as bad when it comes to promoting consumerism.

For sure! That’s why personal responsibility and critical thinking is required for all media we consume. : )

Just purchased a food delivery. It had been years. It was truly yummy but won’t be a habit. Don’t really travel these days. Don’t but designer. Don’t intentionally buy organic except chicken. There is a brand that is so tender and yummy.

I really like good coffee. Instead of buying coffee at Starbucks for $3.00 or more, I buy Starbucks coffee at Target and make a cup at home for about 25 cents. I put the coffee in a 16 oz. thermos and sip away for a few hours. Also with prom dresses , many thrift stores sell" gently used " ones that cost much less than new. With travel souvenirs, I just buy one refrigerator magnet type from where I am visiting for my fridge collection.
