What’s something you’ve stopped doing or buying to simplify your life or save money? 🤍 P.S. Please keep in mind that we’re all different, just because something doesn’t serve me, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy it. Think of this video as inspiration, I’m not here to tell you what you should or shouldn’t buy. Take away from this the ideas you like and leave the rest. 😉

Im with you on food delivery and manicures and pedicures. Pads and tampons. Menstrual cup and period underwear are what I use. I dont use a dish rack because I just let my dishes sit there adding visual clutter. Fabric softner, eye lash curler. Make upbtemover products. I'm so on edge about organic (mainly produce)and cagecfree eggs..I just don't know if it's worth it. Benefit vs cost. I buy almond milk and that is kind of my expensive item for groceries.

I save serviettes from restaurants that I never use anyway and bring them home. We don’t use paper towels, we just use a bunch of tea towels, but if there’s a particularly awful mess that we don’t really want to use a tea towel for, those disposable serviettes can wipe it up and be chucked, so at least they got used

You spoke of not buying things on vacation. I learned this lesson as well. What I decided to do instead is to support local artists- especially of artwork of the scenery of where you are-some of it is so beautiful. And I like supporting local jewelry makers instead to help boost the economy.

Totally agree, our favorite is to have an artwork piece on the wall or a small jewelry piece to wear, from a local artist, so that we enjoy the memory every day.

I also love and prefer buying type of artwork of local sceneries as memorabilia. In 2019 I bought a pencil drawing of Ankar What in Cambodia. It travels light and didn't damage in my luggage. I came home and took it to the framers, so now it hangs in out home.

When I travel, I love to purchase post cards (locally made if possible!) from a museum or market - they're cheap, small, flat, easy to transport, and I typically write a little about what I did that day on the card so I can look back and remember later!

I hear your point with saving money using an Airbnb vs a hotel but there have been so many occasions for me that for a short 2 night stay a hotel wound up being cheaper because of the high cleaning and service fees that some Airbnb’s charge. It really varies by city but sometimes the added Airbnb fees from a host can negate the savings.

The Airbnb fees are high. If it is for a short stay hotel are better .If you fly can be an airport transport to the hotel. Airbnb can be out of the way so you need a taxi.

I have never had a positive experience with Air BnB… so many added fees and issues with things not being as described. The pesticides in specific fruits and veggies as well as grains pushes me to continue buying organic but I’ve found buying organic frozen is much more affordable… especially with berries.

I used to get a gel manicure every 4-6 weeks until COVID hit and I realized I really didn't NEED it. It was a luxury purchase that I enjoyed, but I also found other experiences I'd rather spend my money on. Now, I only get a mani/pedi if I'm going on vacation or for a special event. That's saving me several hundred dollars a year. It truly does add up!

We don’t buy plastic wrap, ziplock bags or paper towels. We use reusable ziplock bags like Stasher, rags and tea towels that we just wash with our towels, and sometimes beeswax wraps in place of plastic wrap (or glass containers and jars usually eliminate the need). I thought this was pretty mainstream by now, but our friends recently were shocked to hear we don’t buy paper towels. This also has helped to greatly reduce the amount of trash we have every week!

I’m in a travel Facebook group and everyday there are horror stories of people’s Airbnb’s being cancelled at the last minute and they are stranded. Not to mention safety concerns, room not looking like pictures, and cleaning fees. I will never book one. Hotels have sales if you sign up for the emails. Also use credit cards for travel points for free stays. I only go to the nail salon for dip for a vacation. That guarantees my nail polish will last 3 weeks during a vacation. It also gives me length that I can never grow on my own which looks pretty in my vacation pictures.

Ashlynne I have followed you for so long, and very inspired by you! I have to say that I encourage you to do research into Airbnb's practices and how Airbnb is negatively impacting the housing market and displacing families around the world. I also used to use Airbnb frequently (especially abroad) but i encourage you to revisit the concept of hotels (which have recently upped their standards + offers to compete with Airbnb) because a medium-to-nice one will typically have a lot of access to the same experiences (wine tasting, hikes, boat trips, etc depending on where you are) and frequently offer discounts when booking through them as well, and they are statistically significantly safer, even in areas where you may want to be extra diligent. Just some food for thought!! Airbnb is hurting the housing+renting market and there is no regulation, which allows hosts to lie about services, availability, cleanliness, and even ownership. In Greece I stayed in an Airbnb that was "place all to yourself" SUPPOSEDLY and the landlord entered with their own key during my stay duration, without announcing themselves, and when I asked them politely to leave they said that they "saw I was in the shower" and thought they could get away with "dropping off some more towels" and then when I asked to see the towels they supposedly brought they did not produce any and said they "must have left them in the car" and when I said ok I will accompany you to the car to retrieve them he got in the car and sped away leaving me standing in the driveway. I immediately moved to a hotel nearby and reported him. Nothing was done! I was not refunded ANYTHING even though I had 11 days left in my stay. I've seen many many reports of similar (and WORSE) experiences. Please for your own safety and general wellbeing I encourage you to consider revisiting your view of hotels as viable options :)

Buying organic can be really expensive, so if you are not able to afford it I totally respect you decision not to buy it. However, if you do have the opportunity to buy organic it is actually really important to do so. Not for you own health, but for the health and safety for the people who work with the produce and also the environment.

My family has a small coffee business and you would be so surprised to find out how cheap actually good coffee is. The cafes and specific shops or brands overcharge people and they even use ground grains mixed with coffee to make coffee weight more? Idk if I make sense English isn’t my first or second language. They basically mix chickpeas or peas or some similar cheap grains and mix with ground coffee to make it weight more which means they will sell more

I started meal planning for the week and it saves quite a bit of money. We plan out the week on Sunday and do the grocery shop that day, so we only buy the ingredients on the list. And also waste no food (which was a big issue before when we would just buy "basic" food items without a plan. This also prevents the need to get fast food last minute.

I take my bike to work every day of the year. A lot of people where I live (north of Sweden) stop using their bikes in favor for cars in the winter, but I honestly don't see the point. I save so much on gas and electricity (yup, we need to warm up the engines for about 20-30 minutes before we drive if the car is parked outside in winter) by just spending 20-30 minutes on my bike each day 🙂

To add to the not buying food delivery.. A lot of the services take 33% of the total purchase, which is a lot for local businesses. It is more supportive for them to pick up. When we were shut down, it made sense to do delivery because it allowed local restaurants to remain open and have income coming in. Now we pick up on the rare occasion we eat out.

I love hearing different perspectives on things that are meaningful to one person and not to another. I collect thimbles, so I always seek them out when we're holidaying. But I don't wear makeup because of allergies, so I also don't need a whole skin care routine thing going on. When we had a season of almost no income, we learnt the true difference between 'need' and 'want' and what was worth investing our limited resources into. We also learnt to borrow, do ourselves, and say 'no', and be OK with saying no. It's also important to learn to graciously receive - not something we're really taught, especially in the church, that teaches us to give and reach out. Sometimes we need to take in and be OK with that too.

Love number 13 more than anything else on the list. Not just saving money but also avoiding waste so helping the environment. 💜💜 I'm a bit torn about the food delivery advice. I don't do takeaway but I think that those that do it regularly would save more time and money by having a subscription fee which usually covers delivery. Especially since petrol prices are increasing as well.

Please be mindful of where you choose to stay in AirBNBs, they are pushing locals and essential workers out of the housing market, especially in many European cities. Whilst a price of 60EUR a night might seem like a bargain for a city centre room to you, its far more than locals can afford as a monthly rent and landlords will rent them to whatever makes more profit. Most the houses in my street are unoccupied for much of the year until the summer or there is an event on. Meanwhile workers such as nurses who work at the hospital at the end of the road are having to live further and further out to find affordable accomodation, when there is limited public transport at night and no parking, putting their safety at risk.

#1 stock, I make my own. I have a couple of containers in the fridge I feed with scraps and every couple of weeks I make a chicken or fish stock. I grow my own little tomato plants, costs $30 a year and pretty unlimited. Also canadian food standards are such that most food is equivalent to American organic, so i only buy organic celery etc. And only buying non imported foods 99% of the time is a massive savings. Bulk foods for seeds, grains and the like. But the biggest savings of all is having a couple of premium credit cards and using and paying them off each month to pay things like grocery or hydro. This gets me hundreds and hundreds of points or cash back for dining out, gas etc. Also buying just two or three occasion wear items that I can mix and match or dress up with accessories. I have a winter LBD and a summer LBD and between leggings, shoes, jewelry and layering, I haven't needed a new dress in 10 years.

I've noticed that I get alot of quilt when wanting to buy myself something nowadays. I don't drink, smoke ,buy take away coffee, I do my own nails, cut my own hair and I save money. I rarely go out because my job is all consuming, so most of my money goes to food and basic, every month necessities. However I have this constant debate in my mind when I want to buy myself something, even if I don't need it. I work hard for my money but it gets to a point where I feel I can't spoil myself because food is getting expensive, I need to save more ect.

I like most of the ideas, thank you for sharing! The only thing: I'm a bit surprised about your opinion on organic food, especially as an idea of the video is to buy less but better quality. In my opinion, fairtrade and organic food is very important for improving working conditions and sustainability in food production. For me it's comparable to buying higher quality clothing against the trend of "fast fashion" and bad conditions in producing countries.

This won't be a forever thing, but because of me not driving/owning a car, this is greatly allowing me to save more money. I too don't buy souvenirs as often as I used to, but I think the pandemic kind of helped me to naturally kick that habit as I haven't taken as many vacations since the start of post-COVID times 😄

I'm a minimalist too but I will not minimize the importance of skin care. It is an investment of time, energy more than money and it is worth. Aging is beautiful but I don't think anyone would want to crack and accelerate the process. Korean skin care (where I live) is way cheaper than European/American brands and 15 years more advanced in R&D. I don't splurge on skin care meaning I don't buy La Mer but I do not scrimp. I religiously cleanse, tone, moisturize and sunblock all the time even indoors! People are floored when I say my age. They think I am at least 15 years younger than I truly am.

For skincare, if you start using certain things now, it will help your skin stay useful! And you don't have to buy excessive products either: sunscreen, hylauronic acid, and moisturizer go a long way! I recommend Dr Dray's YT channel. For traveling, I won't buy souvenirs, but I'll go to actual shops that sell local things.

I don't do most of these, but like my choice not to drink at all is mostly due to it makes me tired and I don't really think alcohol tastes that great. lol I've also never had fake nails because I actually like my nails short, especially when it comes to cooking (more sanitary).

I stopped coloring my hair. I don't get my nails done (unless my mama is treating a time or two a year because she loves it) I get maybe one hair cut a year. I picked a style of shoe years ago thats actually comfortable and I have accumulated multiple colors. By rotating them, they should last a very long time.

Something to keep in mind by staying in Airbnb's is that a lot of times it is forcing people who actually live in the area out of home ownership. I only stay in Airbnb's that I'm renting a room from someone in their actual home or maybe their MIL suite or something like that.

@@annan.3283 Not really, if you're staying in a 5 star Airbnb with thousands of positive reviews. Plus, I always bring a door stopper for the inside door, just in case. Though I've never actually needed it. I don't like the idea of staying in an Airbnb that increases costs of rent and home ownership and negatively impacts the people who actually live in those cities.

Getting your nails done is so expensive. It's literally about the same price as getting your hair done at the salon (getting a color put in or highlights along with a trim). I would rather spend that money on my hair than my nails.

Hmmm We don't really eat out much, maybe once every few months or even more sometimes! We also have a really tight grocery budget and its been learning to re use food from previous meals to make NEW meals with etc so we only have to buy like 8 items and it makes lots of different meals with those 8 items for the week etc....lol We also do free outdoor activities or skiing pass is pretty cheap for winter and stuff. Been bad with board games lately LOL butttt I will let it slide since we cut a lot out elsewhere haha and the value for a game lasts a long time compared to an eat out!!!!

I've never been one to order beverages when eating out, and people thought it was odd. It's nice to know others also skip the huge mark up and drink water! The only one that I've cut way back on, (but can't get rid of), is seasonal changes. Not full out, but my autumn stuff goes out Labor Day -Thanksgiving, so it's actually enjoyed longer than the Christmas holiday. A few small tradeouts for spring, and summer. I appreciate that you are so open to all ways of being intentional. Thank you for sharing your ideas!

I love this video! Such great tips. Something I have done to save money is not online shopping and waiting at least 24 hours before buying the item at the store. I have bought too many things instantly online and regretted it later. So if there is something I really want, I wait until I can go to the store to buy it. Many times, I end up not even buying what I wanted because I don’t want to go to the store and realize I don’t need it haha.

We’re pretty similar bc most of these things I don’t buy or do either! My skincare routine is literally soap and water (although occasionally I will splash some witch hazel on my face at night). We don’t do delivery for food either but that’s only bc we live in the country where things like that wont be delivered 😂 But some of the things you mentioned you made really great points on and even though I don’t *always* buy/do those things I can definitely cut back on like ordering drinks, buying alcohol, coffee (that’s all revolving around drinks 😂 🧐). However, I used to buy Knick knacks when I would travel and I wish I could go back in time and tell my younger self to not waste my money on those things. Except now in one area I allow myself to buy a magnet when I travel and add it to my collection. That’s the one area I’m not so minimal in but I’m okay with that bc I love my magnets and you can always find magnets anywhere you travel! ✈️

I really like good coffee. Instead of buying coffee at Starbucks for $3.00 or more, I buy Starbucks coffee at Target and make a cup at home for about 25 cents. I put the coffee in a 16 oz. thermos and sip away for a few hours. Also with prom dresses , many thrift stores sell" gently used " ones that cost much less than new. With travel souvenirs, I just buy one refrigerator magnet type from where I am visiting for my fridge collection.

That is amazing, I always thought I was weird, I don't do any of those things either. I live in Australia, we decorate our homes and make them nice but I did not realize that people changed their decor with the seasons until I started watching youtube. The only time we add decorations is at Christmas time. The blanket ladder seems like an American idea as well. Thanks for sharing, Ashlynne, I always enjoy your content.

Matthew 6 Treasures in Heaven 19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy,[c] your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy,[d] your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! 24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. Do Not Worry 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you-you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
