This is a 30 min workshop on Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga backbends. It explains how to use the diaphragm and the low belly for deeper backbending in Camel (Ushtrasana), Pigeon (Kapotasana) and Upward Bow (Urdvha Dhanurasana). Learn to get more length through the spine and keep an even and balanced breath.
These backbends from the Ashtanga Vinyasa system are very demanding and should be approached gently. To avoid injury, it is crucial to develop a strong foundation of internal support. This video offers some guidance.

Thanks for this Ty (and Alessandro?). It’s a super-valuable 30 minutes and takes us away from this stupid habit of focusing only on the “wow-asana”. The preparatory postures have so much going on too and we can then step back and see the wood AND the trees. Any chance of adding a “Thanks” button to your profile? Some of us householders can’t get to class but are happy to give what we can. There’s prana in money exchange too, when it’s not being ripped out of us by the Rakshasa’s.🙏🏽

Hello Ty I have a question about flexibility Maybe you can help me with your knowledge. I do a lot of yoga and I got a few bored almost doing splits. But every time this happens, the body shuts down and the muscle shortens for a period of time. Can you tell me the reason? And how you can flex the body to split in a healthy way for the body and over time

Slowly and consistently. Too much at once leads to injury. Have a steady but easeful daily practice, and it will come in good time.
