This song resonates with pain. Crying out "I am," knowing that no one will acknowledge your existence. Neil was the frog who dreamed of becoming a king (in music) and he became one. He got what he always wanted and it left him "lonely still." So many can relate.

“I AM” is him crying out to God but he feels that God is not hearing him. Exodus 3:14 says “God says to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you’ “.

Neil stands alongside anyone, no doubt, but imo there is no best, music is so diverse, we had the King, the Prince, we had Queen, we had the Peter Pan, we had the material girl, so many so much great music that will live forever best is relative, though I will say genres certainly have the best eras, rock, metal , 70s 80s etc there definitely is a plateau of creavtiy, song writing, instrumentals vs day todays shit esp commercial shit that is digitally and vocally auto tuned shit, sure they’re are some great artists today but few get credit or commercial play, but Neil is right up here as an Artist songwriter with anyone.

One of my favorite singer songwriters spanning many decades. I had so many of his records. He had tons of hit songs. "Cherry, Cherry", "Kentucky Woman", "Red Red Wine", "Solitary Man", "Sweet Caroline", "Holly Holy", "Cracklin' Rosie", "Song Sung Blue", "Longfellow Serenade", "You Don't Bring Me Flowers". One of my favorites is "I Am, I Said" which is almost an autobiography of his life & fame. He wrote the song "I'm A Believer" which became a big hit for the Monkees in 1966. I was privileged to see him in concert twice. He was a great showman & his live performances were memorable.

Neil Diamond was a song writer in the old Brill Building in New York City. Him along with others (like Carol King) would sit in cubicles all day and churn out songs. Good songs .Even great songs. But they were faceless people in the entertainment industry. Part of the big "machine". Then he started singing his own songs and became a Superstar. One of the biggest names in Music, Television and Movies. This song describes his state of mind going from the bottom to the top. It sometimes can make you feel empty and alone. He is not the first, or last entertainer to feel that way. But he wrote the perfect song to convey that feeling. Thanks for all your time and effort. You two are a joy to watch.

He said have you ever heard the story of a "frog who dreamed of becoming a king and then became one"..and his story is THE SAME. This is a song of empowerment. I AM. I AM I CRIED. This is the story of every soul who comes to know its worth. The song of every poet, artist, musician and sentient being in the universe. The lonely refelection is just bacground for one caught BETWEEN TWO WORLDS. The path that leads to every ones's heart is inherently lonely but ultimately reveals that which has never has been alone and never could be.

Great songwriter is Neil Diamond... Neil Diamond told a magazine in 2008 that this song came from his time in therapy in Los Angeles, adding that it was an attempt on his part to express what his dreams were about and what his hopes were. He credited the song to the sessions he had with his analyst. He probably would have entered the field of medicine, but left university just before he graduated to take a job as a songwriter for $50 in 1961.

Hey Asia and BJ! Another great song and it was awesome to see you guys hearing it for the first time. I always enjoy that part because it reminds me of when I first heard it. This song is definitely about loneliness and depression, but you missed the meaning of him singing about the frog that dreamed of becoming a king, then became one, and how that’s kind of his story. What he’s talking about is people don’t think about how he started out just like anybody else: a kid with a dream to be a singer, who ended up being the one-in-a-million superstar.

I saw this comment on "song meanings"... "The chair is a reference to the psychiatrist's chair. Diamond battled with this song for 6 months following a near-breakdown after divorce and a move from NY to LA. His failure to land the part of Lenny Bruce in the movie Lenny left him close to breaking point and Diamond was depressed. Diamond eventually took a 4 year sabbatical from performing after his landmark appearance at the Greek Theater in LA in 1972. I am I Said has a far deeper meaning than most casual listeners imagine. The song is a masterpiece by a great songwriter. By his own admission, Diamond spent months in psychotherapy and this song explains wonderfully his thoughts and feelings at the time. In Gestalt therapy, a patient projects his thoughts into an empty chair while a counsellor looks on making notes. This may well explain the meaning of the word chair. It is too easy to dismiss the 'chair' as a trite attempt to make a rhyme but Diamond is nothing but meticulous in his lyric writing and he has said that IAIS underwent countless rewrites until it said exactly what he wanted it to say. Diamond no doubt felt so alone and so alienated that he must have felt that no-one was listening to his tortured cries - not even the (psycho-analyst's) chair.
