I loved Kurt Cobain, but his heroin addiction was a toxic situation that interfered with the band and I think Dave would've left within a couple of years even if Kurt had lived.

@@mztweety1374 an interesting comment. I disagree to an extent, as, from what I've read, Kurt was excited about some of Dave's songs - these eventually ended up on the first FF album, but could've been Nirvana songs if things went differently. Hardcore song. Be yourself. Don’t buy into other peoples’ ideas of who/how you should be. Be principled; stand up for your morals and yourself. Be steadfast in everything. I like how The Foo Fighters ramped it up to an extreme level to make their point. Age has taught me how critical it is to stand up and be who you are. No need to defend who/how you are. No apologies. Our skin gets thinker against criticism and we are more comfortable in it.

This song, just like "I'll Stick Around" is one of a handful of songs supposedly written by Dave Grohl about Courtney Love. "What if I say I'm not like the others What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays You're the Pretender What if I say I will never surrender" Are just some of the lyrics hinting at their personal battle, his deep dislike of her "lies, fakeness & opportunist ways according to him and his I'll feelings towards her. But no matter what inspires him, the Foo Fighters put out awesome music!

Dave Grohl is the dude. He may be the last world renown rock star in the world. His drummer, Taylor Hawkins, got his big break drumming for Alanis Morissette. It may not be their biggest hit but I think Big Me or Aurora are two great Foo Fighters songs to check out. I think Aurora is one of the most beautiful rock songs ever. Even reacting to Dave telling stories is a trip. He did a fun interview with Desus and Mero where he talked about meeting Little Richard and jamming with Prince in an empty LA Forum.

Dave Grohl was outspoken and against the 8 LONG years that was the cheney/bush regime. When first watched that video back in 2007, The song, and the imagery in it's music video seemed to be a huge MIDDLE FINGER to the forces of oppression that had and have become the norm. "The Pretender" is an aggressive modern rock headbanger if there ever was one.

Grohl on the meaning of this song: "That's the thing with lyrics, you never want to give away specifics, because it's nice for people to have their own idea or interpretation of the song. But, you know, everyone's been f'd over before and I think a lot of people feel f'd over right now and they're not getting what they were promised, and so something to do with that." And while this song was released in 2007, it resonates today, and sadly, it will likely still resonate in 100 years.
