“Never Been to Spain” was written by Hoyt Axton, an American singer-songwriter, guitarist and actor. Hoyt Axton also wrote Three Dog Night’s biggest hit, “Joy to the World”, which topped the Billboard charts for six weeks in April and May 1971. Axton must of had songwriting in his genetics, because he was the son of famed songwriter Mae Boren Axton, who was famously known as the “Queen Mother of Nashville”. Mae Boren Axton’s most famous song writing credit is the wildly popular song “Heartbreak Hotel” which she wrote for a young Elvis Presley. She also had the distinction of strategically introducing an unknown Elvis Presley to Colonel Tom Parker.

Three Dog Night were HUGE in the late 60's and early 70's. They tended to cover contemporary songs and championed the cause of singer-songwriters on their albums, introducing them almost by default. As a result, many people's first exposure to Harry Nilsson, Paul Williams, Hoyt Axton, Randy Newman and Laura Nyro can be traced to Three Dog Night's fine work in uncovering them.

Three Dog Night was as big a band as there ever was; they did not write their own music they got the best songwriters in the business to give them charts. Usually those were covers but often their version is what blew up and then everyone covered it because people knew it from Three Dog. Massive vocals band as people will tell you they had multiple lead singers. Attended a concert around 1971, probably the best concert I ever saw. They gave seven encores, it was after midnight and finally said "We'd love to keep playing but the police say we have to quit so they can close the building!"

At the bar, I fell off the mechanical bull several times and then loaned my car to a friend who was too sick (drunk) to stay for Three Dog Night. The only way that a songwriters song got covered by Elvis was if they gave in to his manager, Col Parker's, demand to receive all or the majority of the publishing rights to the song. Most did because a songwriter could retire on just the royalties off an Elvis hit record. The two exceptions. One was Dolly Parton who refused to give up any rights to 'I Will Always Love You' so Elvis who wanted to didn't record it. A smart by Dolly since the Whitney Houston cover of that song made Dolly millions as well as making Dolly the biggest selling female songwriter of all time. The other was the Jerry Reed song 'Guitar Man'. During the recording of Guitar Man Elvis who really wanted to record his version of the song was unhappy with the studio guitarist and asked for Jerry Reed, also studio guitarist, to do the track. Jerry was found out fishing on a lake and came in and perfectly laid down the track. Afterward, when Reed was done Col Parker demanded that Reed give up the publishing rights or the song would not be released to which Reed replied "Okay, go ahead, you tell him that". The song became a huge hit for Elvis and Jerry Reed laughed his way all the way to the bank.

BP, back in the day the songwriter and publisher were paid the industry royalties, and the songwriters were listed on the album and usually also on the album cover. There was no pretense that the artist wrote any given song, as it was typically listed by each track who wrote the song. The early rappers were notorious for just using samples and never listing original writer, and also releasing the sampled song without paying anything to the original writer or publisher. Ex: Eddie Van Halen had to sue Tone Loc over using Jamie's Cryin' samples for Tone Loc's Wild Thang. Van Halen only then got $180,000, where Tone Loc made millions and became a superstar. So even after suing, the publishing owner and song writer didn't come out very well. We are now fighting this same battle with AI infringement.

Shambala and An old fashioned love song are great songs as well. Three Dog Night made cover tunes their staples and killed it

Three Dog Night had a bunch of hits you wouldn't realize, but Joy to the World was a monster hit and Shambala may be the greatest sing along of all time!

Three dog night did some covers, but not all their songs were cover songs.

This is my favorite song by this band, and I'm thrilled you decided to listen to it. The songs most people know by this group are Joy to the World, Mama Told Me Not to Come, Eli's Coming, and One. I think this song gets overlooked even though it's amazing.

There were artists that never wrote a song --- Sinatra, Elvis, Whitney Houston are prime examples. The Carpenters had most of their songs written for them as well. It's just the way it goes.

All three of these men are lead singers. When your night is so cold that you need 3 dogs piling onto you for warmth is a Three Dog Night. Floyd Sneed, playing drums, was with the band for a long time. Before he passed away a few years ago, the lead singer in this song, Corey Wells, joked that 3DN were the first group to rap in the fantastic song, "Mama Told Me Not to Come."

Just watched professor of rock's video, i have been a fan of 3 dog night since 70's, i had every LP they made, still one of my favorites. My brother had met Chuck in a meeting and he's been clean for over 30 years (i think he said 35 years at the time) but that was why he left the band... to get away from it. We saw him a few years back at the Sacramento state fair. Love his voice.

I think usually the Original songs sound better than the covers for the most part, But Three Dog Night did those covers so Great and made them into Hits, that most people never heard the originals from way back and just loved Three Dog Night, they also have a lot of fun on Stages, they're such characters and they all take turns singing different songs, and their voices are awesome together! Must hear the following - Mama Told Me - Shambala - Old Fashioned Love Song - Joy to the World - Eli's Coming - Black and White
