Assassin bugs (and many other predaceous hemipterans) are capable of killing their prey very quickly. I provided a fly to a water strider, and the latter immobilized the former within a couple seconds. A black widow took much longer to immobilize a fly.

Different kinds of venom, widow venom has much stronger long term affects. Assassin bugs need venom to react quickly, widows do not as they can web down their prey and wait for their venom to liquefy the insides.

Yes they can't use maneuverability to their advantage, which they use A LOT. They fly to get good angles and they aren't too precise so they need a lot of space.

I believe it could have gone either way. The hornet could have instantly gone for the head and decapitated the bug, and without the proboscis (the stabbing mouth) which delivers the venom, and then sucks out the digested juices, the bug would be harmless. This fight belongs to the wild west, where it depends on who drew first, and pulled the trigger the fastest. However, after seeing what the Japanese hornets do to the honey bees, I always favored the bug.

I would like that. But interestingly, the giant water bug is the assassin bug's distant relative. In case of a battle, though, I fancy the giant water bug win, only because I think its chitin ( the insect's exoskeleton) is thicker and harder to pierce than that of the assassin bug. But I am NOT hundred percent sure, though.

Asian giant hornet is a rough matchup for a mantis because the hornet is bulky, very strong, and armored. It has to be able to catch and hold it in place to win. You would need a huge mantis to have a competitive fight. I think venom is probably necessary for most insects to have a decent chance against the massive hornet.
