In Mongolian, we have an adage "ᠤᠰᠤ ᠶᠢ ᠨᠢ ᠤᠤᠭᠤᠪᠠᠯ᠂ ᠶᠣᠰᠣ ᠶᠢ ᠨᠢ ᠳᠠᠭ᠎ᠠ" that vaguely translates to "If you're drinking the water, you should follow the tradition". You can be proud of your own heritage and culture, but if you're someone of immigrant descent, assimilation is unavoidable.

Like over 80 percent of Americans are culturally Christian and celebrate Christmas but I don't celebrate that holiday .you telling me that I'm not integrated in the the nation?. Desiring to be American and speak English and obay laws are the only requirements for integrating. What ever u do in your home is your problem. U don't need to celebrate the same holidays are carry the same cultural norms to live in one society. U only have to be aware of other people when u go out.... There are only a minority of people who seem to not be able .no one wants to hear a select few people make their problem,everyone else. Black and native American have literally been living in someone else culture forever, we have no problem with it as long as we are treated right ,when we see other people that want to come in and share then we literally don't care as long as we get along . I've lived always in a white neighborhood and I have many friends from overseas, we all did it just fine and I never thought anything of it ,so my question is, why can't u ? My best friends are native American, Ukraine, Mexican Kenyan and Korean, we were all literally in ROTC together as kids . Considering me and my native friend are the only ones with parents from America, I think we do fine u understanding each other. Most people coming to America blind in . Illhan Omar is a perfect example. They came here fighting for freedom more than some of these crazy people do that are American

From Britannica: assimilation, in anthropology and sociology, the process whereby individuals or groups of differing ethnic heritage are absorbed into the dominant culture of a society. The process of assimilating involves taking on the traits of the dominant culture to such a degree that the assimilating group becomes socially indistinguishable from other members of the society. As such, assimilation is the most extreme form of acculturation.

Corner number 2 is Italian, and the side of the family I am closest to. Corner number 3 is German, and I was heavily influenced by that side. Corner number 4 is scottich, and the side of the family that tried for me. For me, alcohol is a huge part of cultural identity, so I have a glass of wine with my pasta and I have the Jägerpass from my german side hard. I also love a great Guinness and I can down a decent scotch. Food underlies a ton of this stuff, but generally I love a good roast, rich flavors. The European flavor palette tends to be looked on as the "clean" palette, but every country has their guilty pleasure dishes and signiature dishes you feel terrible for even considering. There's then the issue of the Irish gangs, political machines, such as Tammany Hall, the Italian Mafia, such as the Cosa Nostra, Ndrhangetta, the Five Families/Commission. All of that plays a role in my decision making process in politics, because one must be master of their own domain, and not in the Seinfeld sense of the word. It is a wonder that my own Italian grandmother wasn't a typical New York italian liberal. It is a wonder my grandfather wasn't a typical Irish-Catholic, Joe Biden style democrat.

It’s interesting to me because I was opened to some new trains of thought from the original video and this video. I see your point on assimilation and why it’s a difficult topic. Assimilation to me is adhering to the culture enough to be able to work, socialize and thrive whilst retaining personal values and culture from the motherland. Most Asian Americans who were born here are already given this life set up but despite that, the lines are blurry and difficult with a society that focuses so much on race.
@ShamanMcLamie
@ShamanMcLamie Жыл бұрын
What you described is integration. Just enough to operate in that broader society, but not actually be seen as part of that broader society and remain separate and distinct. Assimilation is when that group has almost completely adopted the broader culture. How many people can you pick out from a crowd and say they're German American, or Irish American? It's very likely they have both Irish and German heritage. That is assimilation. When culturally you are indistinguishable from the broader society.

Stats on violence against Asian women are even higher, higher than all other WOC groups (with the exception of maybe Indigenous/Native American women). Assimilation is a MUST. I see a lot of people always claiming something is white, but in reality, it is just American. Many times, I see people claiming some things are about race, but in reality, it is about values. Many foreigners get it and assimilate to American value while keeping their heritage, but then on the opposite end, there are America born people that fail to assimilate to their own communities because they don't have America values and focus on how they are excluding themselves because they are refusing to adjust to a society and instead want the society to adjust to them. It's ironic because a large part of American culture places importance on individuality. However, I feel that a lot of people that fail to assimilate let their individuality grow into greedy narcissism.

On the model minority topic, I think the angle that a lot of people on it (hard working, etc) is somewhat the connotation it was suppose to take, but I believe the real reason it was coined and has perverse the Asian community so much is because the model minority of any society is one that doesn’t push back against the majority status quo of what a country is built on. The clashes between the black minority and white majority is the major status quo and the Asian community is for lack of a better term, suppose to navigate it in a way that they “don’t get in the way” and or “mind their own business amongst themselves” Edit: This comment is more directed towards the post Immigration Act of the 60s and not pre Immigration Act was not meant to downplay Asian movements against discrimination such as the Chinese Exclusion, Asian American lynchings, and other strifes.

Yup, that's precisely how it is implemented by the dominant ethnic group in the country. Black people protest the constant, institutional racism that sees them locked out lucrative jobs, colleges, community investment, police brutality, etc...? Hispanic people protest the inhumane treatment of immigrants, consistent poverty and low state investment in their communities, etc... You know how the dominant ethnic group responds? "Quit your bitching you lazy pieces of shit. Look at the Asians, they're poor and they work harder than all of you, get more degrees than anyone, and don't cause trouble. Why can't you be like them?"
@ImLure
@ImLure Жыл бұрын
This is not to say that the Asian community doesn’t exemplify model traits such as the strong family unit (at least as perceived from outside groups because there are countless Asian American youth abused by parents and what not) but even if all Asian demographics were poor, the same situation would manifest because of Asian cultures perceived habit of collectivism and status quo over rocking the boat. However you can see the actual manifestation of the overarching culture climate between Asian groups as well. When Americans who weaponize the Model minority title, they do so using Chinese (lumping all ethnic groups together) Koreans, and Japanese for the most part, and it’s usually those who have backgrounds of higher education and or status coming over from their homelands plus the groups already here. Some don’t even include Indians in the Asian group But if we look at groups such as Cambodians, Vietnamese (the ones coming over now and not post Vietnam War), Laos, Hmong Immigrants, these tend to be amongst the most poor Asian ethnic groups in American from what I’ve seen, with some stats regarding compulsive education being even lower than black American numbers, but they get looked over and or lumped into the group strictly because of the overarching idea of “not rocking the boat” even though a majority of the SEA live amongst black Americans in the bad neighborhoods There’s a lot of nuance but everyone is just trying to live their life as best as they can and we should learn not to be too hard on one another

I do agree that the topics they were discussing veered towards "mainstream issues" and those nuances of experiences were needed as part of the discourse. What I would love to have heard was from a person who is Southeast Asian and a refugee; specifically Cambodian, Lao, Hmong or Vietnamese. Because the model minority myth does not benefit this group at all due to the conditions in which they had to work from. Additionally, Southeast Asians have generally felt to be seen as "other", or in some cases "Dirty Jungle Asians" or "Ghetto Asians". When we came here in the '80s, we were facing racial discrimination from our new neighbors. What did we do? We created the largest Asian street gang in America in an effort to protect ourselves. So to some extent, the conversations that were being had in this Vice video weren't relatable as it disregarded the nuances that currently exist in the Pan-Asian American community. Though the Vice video attempts to give a voice to Asian Americans, it is still a blanket conversation and I still personally feel that more diversity was needed. This diversity is necessary as Asia is the largest continent in the world and we can't identify our issues with the mainstream American discourse.

I'm Asian and the Vietnamese guy in my opinion is right, if you were a white guy living in an Asian country you will have to assimilate one way or the other especially if you were born there and especially if the nation you reside in have a particularly strong culture and deep history like China or Korea but you will have a little bit more wiggle room for nations like Philippines which is part western and doesn't have as potent an identity as other neighboring regions. Unity by assimilation is an essential part of nationhood even if the said nation as a whole changes over time adopting things from other nations and this is why diverse nations are destined to fail and fragment unless a said diverse territory is dominated by a single culture like the empires of the past, this is just necessity to hold things together and this can be cruel no doubt and the people should be left with the final word whether they want secession or assimilation where each group with a set of common identity forge their own future in case of secession. And let's accept it that the US as a modern nation was founded by Europeans who wanted to make a perfect version of their original continent, whites hold the power and are as of this moment still the majority so it is their right for as long as they have the power to steer the nation to their views as the group with dominion over the nation, if the Asians want thing to change then they better breed like rabbits and take power into their own hands and be the new lords of the States, this is the only lasting way that they can take revenge for all the insults the whites have done to them.

The US a special country just because it is so diverse. We have to raise above race. It is fine to be arguing and fighting, as we already do for politics... But we got to find common love and interest, like: - Borders - Language - Culture (maybe religion, too) - Love for country (not the same as government) So as long as we can share some (not all) of these, we will be a strong country. We can fight about the size of government, abortion, immigration, etc, etc; but we should also agree we love the country. That this is home and that nobody is going back to nowhere...this is it. This country is ours. If not, then we are nothing more than a collection of different tribes of people who just happen to share the land. But for this, Asian parents, young and old, have to stop talking as if "home" is somewhere else and that some day they will "return". We have to be Americans. (together) We can't just be Chinese (or Japanese, Korean, Indian, etc) people that happen to live in America and have no loyalties or love for America.
