Kishore Mahbubani speaks to Professor Kanti Bajpai on India's relations with Pakistan and China, and how they can be improved, despite the seemingly intractable nature of their conflicts. The episode also touches on India's relations with the other great powers, Russia, the United States, its role in an increasingly multipolar world, and its stance in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

China and Russia resolved their border issues, which were even more complicated and extensive than between China and India. The benefits of resolution far far outweighs the costs of compromise. India and China too can move past this setback, which has been exploited by the West to keep India, China and Pakistan apart.

@@tsuikr No inheritance, the border was un-demarcated due to lack of formal treaty. Neither British did enforce on newly independent states to pursue any claim, Burma & Pakistan realigned Sino-border, some give & take. India decided to grab every inch. FYI, Brits didn't even control Arunachal Pradesh. After independent, India secretly sent troops to occupy it in 1949 or 50. Or maybe they rely too much on Wiki, worse source for historical content. And Indians would deny the act of land grabbing by pushing the blame to British. China officials of course know the full details. But they are always diplomatic with words.

Being an european very interested in the history of my continent, i can testify that trade is not allways a sure way to avoid the cloud of war and i am being euphémistic. I agree with Prof Kishore M that this is a golden opportunity to settle India-China dispute. Not just because we have two strong leaders (this is a necessarily condition). But also China's main challenge is the US right now. So China is willing to yield to India if India casts its support or at least clear neutrality on US China rivalry. Russia and China settled its border by China's giving for mostly this reason. This is a Golden Opportunity for India.

Azhar is the mastermind of several attacks against India and India has suffered a lot from terrorism backed by old American ally, so india knows china will support Pakistan at the end of the day. As for Kashmir, the king has signed the Instrument of Accession so, legally that belongs to India. Yearning for peace between India and Pakistan. As peace breaks out across the Middle East, hope that one of the countries will mediate between India and Pakistan to normalize relations. About time for heaven's sake - it's been over 75 years with not much change in the status quo, esp in the last 50 or so years. The most common sense thing to do would be to settle the border dispute, both India and Pakistan keeping their portions of Kashmir, and have peace, free travel across their borders for people from both sides. It's nuts to not do any of this!

The problem is our failure of diplomacy and bureaucratic obduracy and hollow arrogance on our part after the Bandung Conference . Dr Mabhubani is so realistic let's take the cue . Pakistani Education has deteriorated a lot with Madrasas coming up exponentially across the country with each one competing to bring about the supremacy of their brand of Islam ! The History that is taught in pakistani schools has resulted in severe mental shocks when they go abroad to any Western nations for higher studies. Secondly unlike Indonesians , Pakistanis have cultural identity problems mixed with Islam of numerous types. (The same is true of majority Indian Muslims). India has border disputes with all its neighbors, not just China. In February 1951, three and a half years after the British have left the subcontinent, India invaded and annexed Tawang, South Tibet and occupied to this day. This land grab is solely Indian and has nothing to do with the British Raj. Tawang is the Sixth Dalai Lama's birthplace and home to a four hundred years old Tibetan monastery. In 1987 India make South Tibet a state and renamed it to the so called Arunachal Pradesh. AP is recognized as a disputed territory by the United Nation in 2009, making India the only country occupying two United Nation recognized disputed territories, the other being Kashmir.

Wondering if Russia is currently a better mediator between India and China given its intimate ties to the two great powers. Unfortunately intellectual likes of Henry Kissinger belong in a bygone era, we have lost the wisdom of long-term strategic thinking amongst the political elites in the West to act as a credible and relevant go-between.

and India won't support America too much, especially in Russia's case. India won't align to be a junior partner lol and it's in Quad cause India don't want China to dominate. It abstained and didn't condemn Russia cause she doesn't want Russia to be weak. China is considered not trustworthy as it has always backed Pakistan in terrorism against India as well and again recently in OIC. A weak india is in China's and Pakistan's interest. India's interest is in stronger Russia and multipolar world.

Pakistan needs to turn away from its long standing damaging association with the US, and also stop taking IMF loans which are a debt trap. This would include getting rid of most Western NGOs from the country as their presence has been counterproductive to the country. I would argue, that the MOST IMPORTANT country for Pakistan on this planet is India, Mother India, followed by others in the region. That is my dream.

Well, I do understand your point but it's a very complicated issue. We also need to count the opinion of the people of Ladakh. I don't know from where you are but think for yourself, A part of your state is under the control of China when they invaded in 1962, I don't think U would accept losing a huge area of land to an invading nation. I would understand if we lost the land at the time of our independence but that's not the case. We lost it after more than 10 years after independence and the people of Ladakh has been living in this hope that one day their lost land will be united. So we need to first convince the people of Ladakh and give them an incentive for their lost land if we are to accept the proposal of the Chinese.

He mentioned Amartya sen in the context of expanding trade, Amartya sen isn’t all gung ho about globalization or trade. Again he claims that the Commies where the reasonable ones and Indians where the emotional idiots who don’t agree with it.

Professor Kanti Bajpai got India- Pakistan relation wrong, 1. A major roadblock is Pakistan promoting terrorism vis a vis India (unlike Vietnam-China relation). 2. Hostility with India is a prerequisite for Pakistani army to remain is power and justify its humongous share of defence budget when Pakistan is always going to IMF for bailout. 3. Comparison of Pakistan with Bangladesh is not accurate as country need political and social stability which is absent in Pakistan. (Mob lynching of Sri Lankan textile manager in a blasphemy case )

India and China will never become friendly neighbours cause these two nations will compete with each other in the not too distant future. The rivalry will be fierce and i believe there will be no love lost between these two giants and this predominantly due to the fact that, historically both countries have looked down upon each other and with a certain degree of mistrust. Unless conscious effort is made by both governments to create an environment facilitating social and cultural synergy amongst the people of these two ancient civilizations. Pakistan on the other hand is a failed state moving rapidly towards self destruction which is a matter of grave concern as there are more than 150 nukes which could easily fall into wrong hands.

@@rap3208 well the point is about relation of China-India not about economy here. There is a lot of mistrust between both. If you look at modern history china-india relations. They were always awkward, border tension might not solve this problem alone cause china has great ties with Pakistan, this time Wang yi accepted the pakistani stance in OIC bout Kashmir which is considered as integral part and interrior matter of India, and this gave the message that china isn't trustworthy. China, for a decade, blocked the listing of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist under the United Nations sanctions regime. Azhar is the mastermind of several attacks against India and India has suffered a lot from terrorism, so india knows china will support Pakistan at the end of the day.
