This is an English-only problem. Most languages already have different word for the country and the bird, so there is no need for such change, and the current country name is different from Turkey anyway. For example, in Italian we call this country Turchia (pronounced Turkiya for my Turkish friends), while the bird is called tacchino. Completely unrelated. Also very different in Spanish: Turquìa/pavo, or in French: Turquie/dinde.

In French turkeys were originally called "poule d'Inde" which means "chicken from India" and it turned into "dinde" and "dindon" for the male turkey. In the 16th century Europeans still referred to America as India because of the explorer's mistake thinking they had reached India when really they had set foot on a new whole continent. ⛵ 🌎

In náhuatl, the Aztec's language, the male bird is called 'weixolotl', so in Mexico's Spanish we call it 'guajolote'. And we may be slightly disappointed when our bird is wrongly adscribed to a country it was not originated in.

I can understand both points of view, and I respect whatever the outcome, but I think people should understand that countries have different names in different languages. Turkey is the English name for the country, and Türkiye is the Turkish name. In a similar way, we don't get confused when talking about the country China and the ceramic material called china.

As someone who moved abroad after living in Berlin where you hear Turkish every day, I did not realize that I missed hearing people speak the language. It’s so fascinating to me. I tried to study it just a little bit and realized it has a lot of grammatical similarities to Japanese (which I speak) which made me even more fascinated. I really wished I kept studying the language.

Australian’s never view Turkey in a disparaging way like it is a bird. Our formation as a nation is largely due to the sacrifices of our forefathers during the WW1 1915 Dardenelles campaign at Gallipoli. The sacred day every year for secular Australia is 25 April which is the anniversary date of ANZAC’s invasion at Gallipoli. Every year Australians, New Zealanders and Turks commemorate this day at Gallipoli. Every school child is taught about the Dardenelles campaign & the absurdity of Winston Churchill’s plan to attack Turkey. Ataturk was a brilliant general & tactician. After the war when he was President he paid a great tribute to our young men who died on Turkish soil saying that our sons are Turkey’s sons so mothers don’t grieve we are looking after them & the soil in which they are buried will always be a little bit of Australia. Whatever Turkish leaders wish to call Turkey Australians will always remember the name of the place that forged our national identity & drew us away from simply being another British colony. Good luck whatever you call yourselves. Our bonds of respect and friendship will always continue.

@@kerimgumus9944 I don't have these - but have Türkiye saved in my dictionary. I am used to using macrons from typing Te Reo Māori words which are increasingly used in New Zealand. I don't know or understand Türkçesi (hope I have that right) but it's simple to look things up to at least try to get things right. I might still slip up and say 'Turkey' at some points - but I'll try to ingrain the habit of using 'Türkiye' now that I know that is the right word to use. Not sure I have the pronunciation quite right though!😅

In Romania the country is "Turcia" (pronounced "Toor-chee-ah") and the bird is "curcan". I highly recommend visiting the country, very welcoming people, great sights, awesome vibes! I fell in love with Istanbul and the Aegean Sea coast. Places like Kuşadasi, Çanakkale & Davutlar are relaxing vacation spots. Loads of historical sights, great tea & the food is to die for! And if you're good with bargaining, there's "a sale" waiting for you in every shop ;)

I went there when I was 13 with my sister and my mom, and it wasn't that pleasant at all. Men who asked my mom where her husband were all the time, men who would flirt with me and my twin, a restaurant owner who would always touch my blonde hair and go "beautiful swedish girl" in my language. Boys who would go up in an abandoned building so they could see above the hotel walls, and wisle and shout every time they could see a woman in a bikini by the pool. A taxi driver that scammed my mom of money when we lost our way and needed to get back to the hotel. Two parents that dragged me in to their shop to introduce me to their son and asked me to marry him. No, it wasn't very pleasant.

The old usage made no sense and was used maliciously by the racist citizens of the imperialist states that had committed genocide against the Turks in the past. Whether the name change will work or not really depends on if the governments of the English speaking world would want to cooperate. I will give you two examples. In 2005, South Korea made a request to the Chinese government to change the Chinese name of the city of Seoul from "汉城“, the city's ancient Hanja name, to "首尔“, a phonetic translation of its modern Korean pronunciation. Chinese government agreed and stopped using the name old name. In just a couple of years people got used to the new name and basically forgot about the old one. More recently, Belarus tried to get the Chinese government to change the country's name from "白俄罗斯“ to "白罗斯“. Both are phonetic translations, but the first one literally means "White Russia", which allegedly caused confusion among some Chinese people, making them think that Belarus is part of Russia, which the Belarussian government apparently wasn't happy about. But this time around, the Chinese government didn't cooperate. As a result Belarus is stuck with the name "白俄罗斯“ among Chinese people, even though they have changed their official name on the website of the embassy.

For Belarus, the word '俄' follows the pronunciation rule of Manchurian and some Altaic languages that do not start with a l/r sound at the beginning. The Manchurian-ruled Qing dynasty named Russia as 俄罗斯 (e lo si) instead of 罗斯 (lo-si, Rus). This word is adopted in Chinese as well. Belarus literally means White russia, which has the meaning as the original word 白俄罗斯. So there is no point to change to 白罗斯.

English is not the only language in the world , everybody , every country will still call them by the name they use in their own language. I understand why they want change but this sounds like a bad time because this will cost a lot and economy is bad now .Like one lady said the government is possibly using this to move attention from internal problems . In ancient Chinese historical books, we call the Turkic peoples 突厥 (Tūjué) which sounds almost exactly like Türkiye. Our mighty neighbour has thousands of years of glorious history. It is not a stupid bird. The name change is a must. Go Türkiye. 🇹🇷👍🏼

In English and many other languages (probably including the Turkish language), there are several words that are spelt the same but have different meanings. The words Turkey and turkey are great examples of these words. There are way more great things associated to the name Turkey than just the bird. When I think of Turkey, I think of their historical sites, their music, and their sweets. My country's name has also been subject to change by some of our politicians who want to STAMP THEIR NAMES in our history yet like most of the people interviewed in the streets of Istanbul, such change is impractical and unnecessary (at least for the time being) given the other more important issues that our governments need to address. If the government feels that the name Turkey is mocking their country, I think they have to evaluate their feelings, not the name of the country. I am not from Turkey and this is my opinion.

North Macedonia is the same. As far as I know Macedonia in Italian means "fruit salad" even though I'm not Italian but I know this word so I will say it is even less offensive than the English word "turkey." So I can see it will be hard to accept the new names like how Republic of Macedonia or just FYROM because of the Greek disputes with the name "Macedonia" to North Macedonia so it will be even harder to accept the new name Turkiye instead of Turkey, just like Swaziland changing to Eswatini or Czech republic also adopted Czechia like 6 years ago. It is basically the same deal as Ivory Coast or Cape Verde. I don't see the issue of Turkey changing to Turkiye because of that. In French turkeys were originally called "poule d'Inde" which means "chicken from India" and it turned into "dinde" and "dindon" for the male turkey. In the 16th century Europeans still referred to America as India because of the explorer's mistake thinking they had reached India when really they had set foot on a whole new continent. ⛵ 🌎

The problem is that the change will need to happen not in Turkey but in all the rest of us whenever we speak English. That is a huge task. In Danish the Chinese capital is called "Peking". 25+ years ago the Chinese somehow pressed us into forbidding any other spelling than "Beijing" in the media. But that only means that, even when it would be proper, if you don't want to bend to Chinese pressure you can't mention their capital in the media. Sorry China, but you shot yourself in your own foot. I really don't hope Turkey will make the same mistake, it's a much too nice a country for that. Then of course we would also need to change the name of the religion in India. My Hindi friends could be offended by Turkey calling them a bird. Peru as well would need to change their country's name. "Peru" is Portuguese for turkey (the bird). I believe we should change no words but stick with it and live with it. The important thing is that we know what we are talking about. And we humans are clever enough to understand that even if two different things have the same name.

The turkey belongs to the genus Meleagris, and there are two turkey species: the wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) of eastern and central North America and the ocellated turkey (Meleagris ocellata) of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. So I guess the dictionaries would have to be the ones to prescribe the change of the colloquial term.

Actually this changing the name to Türkiye stuff didn't start only recently. We had stuff at our home that is stamped with "made in Türkiye" texts in 2012 or so. It's only now that they decided to make it official

"Türkiye" is difficult to know how to pronounce and spell, and it can be impossible to type if your language (e.g., English) doesn't contain "ü". It would be like Chinese insisting that everybody refer to their country as "中国".

This is such a petty reason to change a name. There has to be a deeper issue because noone thinks you're talking about a bird when you say "I am from Turkey". Come on. Words are different in other languages. Out of all the issues a country could be dealing with, they pick this. I'm from Dominica and everyone thinks it's the Dominican Republic. Two different countries. If we changed our name it would be so the country with 10M people stopped overshadowing my tiny 70k population island. THAT'S a reason to rename a country. It's STILL phonetically difficult to insert a vowel after another in the end of the word when speaking ENglish, it doesn't FOLLOW the phonetical patterns of the Language. TURKIYE IS IN TURKISH. They should change the name of the bird. Afterall, the bird got its name from the country. Europeans mistakenly called it that because it was a popular product of Turkish merchants, (which is something this report should have highlighted). We should call it Pavo, which is what the Mexicans call it (where it was first domesticated).

Just for etymological context, the bird was named after the Turkish traders who brought the bird to European markets via Constaninople( Istanbul). There was no word for this bird so people would refer to it as the turkish bird which later got shortened to turkey (because we love to simplify language). Interestingly, the word for turkey (bird) in Turkish is hindi which is also the world they use to describe India (Hindistan). As for the turks who were interviewed, I don't think many of them have given much thought to the etymology of their vocabulary related to other countries... because no one does, I only know about it because I nerd out on that stuff. I speak Turkish and live here but have yet to have a conversation about the name change. It's not an issue here. Inflation and the economy are the main issues as of writing this comment.

Cause turkish media are not making it a big deal, plus this is not something new, it was discussed month ago, UN only accepted the request now, this is why AsianBoss made their video. Doesn't mean that people are against it. Ask to the Turk if they will rather have their country referred as Turkey or Türkiye during international meeting they will all say the later. Also regarding India, they are refereed as India on the international level, making it irrelevant to whatever people use it in Turkey.

I personally admire the Turkey of the old Roman and Byzantine empires but there also a lot of history in the ottoman period. I think Turkey is a mix of a lot of great rich cultures and history. The bird is literally named after the country. Because Turks used to be the middlemen of trade between Europe and East Asia, Europeans started referring to anything exotic as being turkey (adjective).

I guess people from Turkey can see the irony in my comment. *Peru* as well, oh no, they're not a country but a bird, in Portuguese at least. Peru means "turkey" (the bird). I know it can be confusing, but we humans know what we're talking about even if it's called the same. Occasionally people can make jokes (laughing is healthy), but if they mean harm they will find a way anyway. Changing a word from what it was always called only makes life more confusing.

Hindi = the bird, in Turkish. Hindi = of the Indian Hindu religion. Indian = a person from India. Indian = a native from America. Peru = a country in America. *Peru* = turkey the bird in Portuguese. Dominican = from Dominica (small country) Dominican = from the Dominican Republic (larger country). Should we change all these names and many more around the world? Or stay with it, occasionally love it or joke about it, and really just live with it. In my native language Danish the capital of China is "Peking". But not anymore. For 25+ years, due to pressure from China, we've only been allowed to write "Beijing" in the media. The result is that sometimes the Chinese capital simple will be left out and not mentioned. The Chinese shot themselves in the foot. Please don't make the same mistake in Turkey, your country is too nice for that.

I'm from Czech republic and even though we changed the international name to "Czechia" a few years back, majority of ppl still use Czech republic (as you can tell by my introduction). In czech we are still Česká republika, as it's written in our constitution, even though some ppl might use the short Česko, both make sense. Honestly, the name change matters only if the name is completely different, which here isn't and ppl will still use "Turkey". Also ... English is not the only language in the world -_- I knew Turkey (contry) was called that, before I've learned the bird has the same name ...

Fun fact: in Greek we always called you Czechia. Czech Republic never became a thing. Now it's you that changed it, and we are correct without doing anything :D Another example, Greece in Greek is Hellada and in English its "Hellenic Republic" officially. Interesting. I didn't know that. In Danish you are called "Tjekkiet", that would mimic "Chechia". But when we speak English I doubt we will call you anything but "the Czech Republic" (at least as long as you stay a republic). Just like I can't stop saying "Peking" for the Chinese capital. But in the media we're only allowed to use "Beijing" (due to pressure from China 25+ years ago). Damn. I'm not bending to Chinese pressure. Portakal means orange in Turkish. it sounds like Portugal. but we call Portugal as Portekiz in Turkish. Hindi means turkey in Turkish. Hindu means indian in Turkish. but we say "Hindistanlı" instead. Mısır means Egypt in Turkish and Egyptian language. Mısır also means sweet corn in Turkish. anyway we do not make joke with Mısır, Portakal, Hindi. i find it childish. mostly people called transported products with name of the country they bought from. which means belong to the country.
