With a multi-billion dollar industry in India, skin bleaching is very common among the Indian population. But how are people with fair skin treated in India? Do they get preferential treatment? We hit the streets of Mumbai to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Indian population.
Special thanks to our Asian Boss team in Mumbai.

@@shivanikm7693 girl, you don't need to have lighter skin to be beautiful. You are perfect the way you are. Learn to love your skin tone. You said yourself that you just started your teenage years so if you continue to think that having lighter skin will make you "pretty" or something it will affect your mentality in future. @@shivanikm7693 not to be rude or something but do you really wanna be a kpop idol because music/dance is your passion or just because you want to meet your idols there? Whatever the reason is I wish the best for you, you are young so you might don't really know kpop's dark side or whatever but one thing I wanna say is that you don't need to have lighter skin tone to be a kpop idol. There are many idols whose skin are tan like Mamamoo's Hwasa, Exo's Kai and Bts' Taehyung but they all are successful because of their talents. Is that so? I didn't think it can be that bad. I'm an Indonesian, of course as an Asian we have similiar opinion about lighter and darker skin, but straight up discrimination from skin color isn't something I've seen, people play light-hearted joke to their friends about it sometimes but that's about it, if anything, we have racism towards the Chinese ethnics in the country.

While you mean well, your comments scream ignorance. It’s not the same. There is an entire system designed to oppress dark skin people from jobs to romance to social acceptance. This doesn’t happen to light skin people. If by lightening my skin I increase my chance with romance, job opportunity, and social acceptance, then it’s beyond just “loving my own skin” Stop diluting the problem with your “it goes both ways” comment.

As an Indian realist, I can say that this generation is also obsessed with fair skin so much that see themselves as white. Now, fairness word has been replaced with glowness word but the sense is same. They don't show openly show their dislikeness in public 'cuz they fear that they will be termed as narrow-minded. And whites are obsessed with getting a tan - a golden brown skin! No problem! No one says anything against it How about surgery to get a straighter nose, liposuction to suck the fat out, change hair color, bleach off hair off the body, surgery to get bigger breasts, a bigger behind etc? no problem. "We here in the west approve of all this - WE make the rules and so all this is ok WE don't approve of darker skinned people getting a lighter tone - now that is wrong!" The sad thing is to see Indians mocking themselves - still slaves of the white man Still putting themselves down because the white man says so . Fact is that in ancient times people with a lighter skin tone meant they worked indoors, meaning they made their living by using their brains, had an education And that is how this looking up to fairer skin tone came in Of course that is not true today but that's the idea We should not judge people by skin tone but nothing wrong with saying I want a lighter skin tone

I’m a British Indian. I grew up in Britain and well it wasn’t obvious I was Indian, and whenever I went to visit family in India, they would always compliment me on the fairness of my skin, and even as a young child I knew it was wrong. As I got older, people on the streets would shout “Ghost girl” at me and I felt like I wasn’t meant to be there and I felt really out of place. I took it personally back then but now I’m starting to take it lightly because no matter what people are never going to be satisfied. There will always be unrealistic standards 😢

What a great video! Many people of all different "colors" might not also know or be aware that there is discrimination within "fair-skinned" peoples. I was teased and made fun of throughout all of my childhood and on into adulthood being a "redhead". In fact, all redheads are. It's not ever anyone's favorite at all among "fair-skinned" people. Getting beat up as a little kid just for being a redhead was commonplace. And I'm sure even now in 2022. Being "Pink with Orange Hair" is something I learned "own" because you are at a very young age classified as a "Redhead", "Carrot-Top", "Ginger"....as a societally imposed badge/ label, life long label. Ask any redhead anywhere in the world, they will tell you. So there it yet another layer of the cake we call "humans". :) Love this video! Well done! Cheers!

How does that skin color issue relate to caste system when our great Lord Krishna and even Rama had a very darker skin tone, as it is stated. I agree with the point that caste system had an effect on this but it was very less, the main reason of Indians wanting to be light skinned was because of British people. During the colonial period, the Britishers were in power and they were wealthy and powerful and they obviously hated dark skinned people. So, the thinking of Indian people changed and they started thinking that people with fair skin hold a higher position in society and he/she must belong to a good wealthy house. That is what basically started this problem of racism in India. As someone pointed out in the comments, I would like to talk about Lord Krishna. We know that Lord Krishna was dark in colour , he was depicted as dark as a rain filled monsoon cloud and beautiful in the old scriptures and shlokas and granths. And the old Idols of Lord Krishna will also be black or Dark, but because this change in people's thinking, he was later portrayed as blue or fair skinned(very less) at some places.This is because of the effect of colonization and this shows how big is colour discrimination in our country. And I am not saying that caste system is not a problem, it is one of the biggest problem of our society. Even I have seen my grandmother do discrimination on the basis of caste. My mom is a teacher, and in their staff they always eat lunch together and eat each other's food too, and my grandma always used to ask my mom that what is the caste of her fellow staff people, and she used to say that don't eat food with them and etc. well I am glad that my mom never listened to her XD . She even used to ask me about caste of my friends when I was young and I always used to say that I don't know. But nowadays I always counter her on these kind of remarks. I always try and make her understand that there is nothing like untouchables. But just like most of the old people she is too stubborn to realize.

it is a thing even in EUROPE where everyone is already on the lightest end of the skin color spectrum. I'm from India and I would like to comment that as you go more towards the southern part of India, this perception changes. The northern guys and girls are usually fairer and hence the perception of beauty is linked to fairness. But having stayed in Mumbai my whole life and then shifting to Hyderabad for job, I have firsthand seen the shift in the attractiveness factor. In south, I don't think much weight is given to the fairness of a person. Even though the industries say otherwise, I have seen people falling in love despite of anyone's skin color. And I guess as days goes by, I am observing the same in the northern parts too.
@idont3319
@idont3319 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah because north indians are naturally fairer than south so south love their dark skin and north their light skin. That's a reason a dark person can face problems in North.

Growing up in America, I've been teased and picked on my whole life for being too fair. One of my ex boyfriends, told me I was whiter than his (white) shirt. I've had more than one teacher ask me if I was sick because I was so pale. It used to make me so insecure. I would always self-tan for the majority of my teens and 20s. And it didn't always look good. Eventually I got more comfortable in my own skin and now I just ignore people when they say negative things. When I was younger, I would've traded skin colors with any of these people in a heart beat. I am still a little insecure when it comes to my legs... But everyone is beautiful. All colors.❤️

I live in Ontario, Canada for 5 years now. And there was a controversy here because some fairness cream were being sold on the market, some even went to prison! While in India, fairness cream is everywhere. There's a difference between a face makeup and a cream that's supposed to make you fairer or whiter by applying it your whole life! I wish actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui with real majority Indian skin tone gets appropriate role in Bollywood. I don't care what anyone says, a Bihari teacher played by Hrithik Roshan is not okay with me. People, you are beautiful just the way you are🥰.
