Racial remarks made by some people were clearly wrong, and there is no doubt about that. But there were a few reasons sam was criticized by the majority of the korean netizens.
@kda-26723 жыл бұрын
First, when sam openly made racial jestures in the past, the general public just laughed and went over it because they understood that it was not meant to be racist. NOBODY criticized him for that. sam harshly and openly criticizing A few immature highschool students for doing blackface seemed hypocritic to many people.
@kda-26723 жыл бұрын
Second, the ghanan dancers, who were the people the students tried to dress up as, openly approved of the students makeup. Sam aggressively attacking the students when the dancers themselves said it was okay confused many koreans
@kda-26723 жыл бұрын
Third, korea is a EXTREMELY PRIVACY- SENSITIVE country. Koreans don't "openly share someone else's picture" publicly even if that "someone" is a criminal. Sam publicly posting the private info of the students on sns clearly crossed the line. Finally, his manner of addressing the problem was overly aggressive. The students didn't intend to offend black people. They just tried to recreate a meme. Their intentions were obvious. I agree that it still was inappropriate, but sam didn't have to openly criticize them. As a celebrity and a sensible adult, he could have personaly informed them of the problem. Many koreans were offended and flabbergasted by sam's attitude.

The story about the Korean girl who stood up and defended the girl with the red curls & her friend on the train really shows that there are still good people who are capable of thinking rationally & acting accordingly. It's a positive thing when a complete stranger can take it upon themselves to stand up for someone else & set an example for others to follow. It'd be great if we as a society can open up to each other, be protective of each other, & speak up when they see something that is not right. 9:15 I love & agree with her message at the end. Sad to hear about Sam. I remember how much Koreans loved him, but when he tries to educate them on why discrimination is wrong they switch and try to cancel him. It's disturbing to say the least. As a Korean (who lived in the states), I had very complicated feelings about what happened to Sam. First of all, as shocking as this may sound, the general public in Korea at that time didn't know that blackface was considered a racist act. Blackface is seen as an offensive act due to how it was used historically to belittle black people in the US (by the white people), but many Koreans didn't know. Koreans feel offended when they see the Japanese rising sun flag but many people who do not know the history use it as a decoration, and I'm sure there are many people who still do not know about this. We all assume people would know and be more considerate about what offends us culturally but it is impossible to know everthing from the start. It would have been nice if Sam had used a softer tone when telling the high school students that it's not appropiate and is considered offensive to the black community. The biggest part to why the Korean community got heated was how he wrote his angry thoughts in only English and called out the racism in Korea when he himself had times when he made ignorant and racist comments towards Koreans in the past. I really hate racism as a past victim, but we should try explaining to eachother what offends us and not resort to anger right away. I was called names and children made slit eye gestures when I was in the states when I was little, but I don't think all these acts were the result of pure hatred or animosity. There weren't many asians where I lived so I'm sure they didn't know better. We just need to communicate better.

Also why not put korean subtitles in this? What good could a racism conversation in a country do, without being addressed to the ACTUAL members of that country? But then there were about 15% of people who were out and out racist (from all ages and genders). So, most of the people were really good to me and I appreciated it. Growing up in my African(Zambian) home, I was taught to respect all people and if I encountered a foreigner, I was reminded to go out of my way to make them feel welcome. "It's hard enough being away from the familiar," was reiterated often enough to have the words stuck in my mind to this day.... Several years later. I've been to Asia and I lived in India for the most part... For a year. I had to endure people touching my hair and asking for pictures when I wore my curls in a fro. I smiled through all the prodding; humouring them because I was taught to always be polite and I understand that many people are genuinely curious and wish to learn about different races and/or cultures. The very least I expected was to be extended the same courtesy I showed to others. Life isn't that simple, huh?😅 I do not want to sound like the only reason I strive to be nice is so that people can be nice to me, too. Far from it. I should want to be nice on my own irrespective of people's response to my actions. To this day, I do not understand why the shade of my skin or the texture of my hair would make people hate me. I would understand it all better if they despised my actions rather than things I can hardly alter. To despise an individual is understandable but to despise an entire race of people because of presuppositions and their features..... It sounds absurd to me. We can't keep living like this... Stifling people even now... In 2021! We're all humans. Can't we just live as human beings?

I humoured them without delving into the reason why they wanted the pictures. On the negative, there were some people..... Mostly the older people.... Who would stare and make unpleasant expressions and then proceed to say something I could not understand. I ignored them😅 They didn't know me and I thought.... And still think..... that they have ideas ingrained in them about what I'm supposed to be like. I won't make them think differently by reacting to every unpleasant gesture.

I agree Koreans should become more aware of the racism happening inside, but it also feels degrading when people in the comment section think "Koreans should be educated". I've seen and experienced many forms of racism in the US and Europe as an Asian. So I don't think we are the only ones who have racist people. Also, by saying "Koreans should be educated" you tend to ignore the racism that happens the other way, and at times justifies the hatred towards Koreans. (which is racism all over again)

I can't say this country isn't racist or is. Japan just seems to know how to treat foreigners right. China attracts foreigners all over the world. Even though korea is developed now. It takes years for people's mindsets to change. I think for us black people we need to stop waiting for people to accept us. If they don't respect you or don't see you as human. Then don't bother wasting your time.

There was literally a commercial in China throwing a black man in the laundry and then a white man appears as the clean laundry. There's never been a commercial like that in Korea. I lived in Korea for 3.5 years starting from 2012. I would say while I did experience racism/ignorance from people there, my overall quality of life was better in Korea than in the USA. In fact when I came back to the States, I was depressed for a couple of years and really wished I could have stayed in Korea, but I was hitting a roadblock there career-wise. Some of that was due to race, but the other part was wanting to have either other types of teaching opportunities (like teaching adults) or a decent paying job outside of teaching. If I had the opportunity, I would move back. It’s unfortunate that we sometimes have to experience negativity and ignorance in order to have that better way of life, but until society as a whole finally gets it right, it’s going to be that way for a long while. Also, I lived in Spain for a bit before moving to Korea, so that prepared me for what I experienced in Korea.

As a Korean I'm so sorry about black people who have bad experience in Korea. but also I feel like asian boss want to make black people as a victim in korea. Kymberly Eyo and Brown Beauty Abroad (interviewee in this video) said in this comment section and their channel that asian boss cut out their diverse mention about korea. It's really wrong that interviewee said the good and the bad at the same time, but only pick the bad one. I'm really appreciate that asian boss point out my country's problem especially racism. but I think they should send truth and be careful to send biased nuance. because even I think asian boss rather making discrimination against black people in korea. Korea is not yet familiar with foreigners, so there is no fundamental hatred for any foreigners, including blacks. However, some media keep saying that Koreans fundamentally hate black people, and such things are being passed on to Korea too. It conveys the perception that "Koreans hate black people" to Koreans who do not yet have a special perception about black people. I know there is a racial problem in our country, and I think our people should study about it. But there is a need to emphasize more positive aspects about black people to countries especially that have yet to be identified about black people. Identity is created unconsciously. Therefore, media should not let Koreans unconsciously perceive that black people are discriminated against in Korea. Rather, it is important to make Korean recognize black people as harmonious with Koreans. If you try to reject it after negative perceptions have already been created, you will end up failing like racism in the United States. Once again, I apologize to foreigners who have experienced inconvenience in Korea. As a member of Korea, I will try not to have such a problem in Korea anymore. sorry for my bad english.

The woman who said "racism in Korea is childsplay" made a very important point. Racism in Korea is not rooted in years of slavery, lynching, and discriminatory laws - it's rooted in lack of awareness due to lack of diversity. Korea has been a homogenous society for thousands of years and you can't expect them to have the same diversity awareness like they do in multicultural societies like Canada or the U.S. Why would they? There is a growing number of people from the black diaspora moving to Asia and although they won't be immune to racist experiences they won't have to worry about being shot by the cops there. Despite diversity education and anti-racism laws black people still get attacked and killed by their own citizens in their own country in the U.S.
