I am a 27-year-old guy currently working in Mumbai as a medical billing specialist for US healthcare. I earn around 50,000 rupees a month and live with my family of five. In contrast, my counterparts in the US earn 10 to 15 times more than me, even though they work fewer hours. In India, we work for minimal pay with very little work-life balance. It's extremely challenging and exhausting to survive here. I've had to put my dreams on hold just to make ends meet for my family.

A few points. In western countries there’s usually not a single income dependency as there is in India. I live in the uk and my husband and I work full time to maintain a good standard of living. Also, the cost of living is higher and taxation is generally higher (depending on state in the US and virtually anywhere in Europe). When I was working for a firm with an office in india, I was a bit envious that although they got lower wages, they had drivers and domestic help. Even as a senior manager and in a dual income household I couldn’t afford luxuries like that. I have to work 9-5 and then make food for the family and do domestic chores with help from my husband. It isn’t equatable.

I'm an (east) Asian American who used to work for an India-based company several years ago. I knew that my counterparts in India were paid less, but I didn't realize it's probably like a 10:1 ratio. A local in Jaipur was kind enough to negotiate a tuktuk driver to be my personal driver for the day and the price was 900 rupees (around $13). The driver later invited me for dinner at his home, which was a small 3-room concrete structure that he shared with his wife and 7 children. No air conditioning despite being over 100 degrees F at night. It was so humbling/beautiful/sad all at the same time that he would open his home to me, a complete stranger, despite having basically nothing. Neither he, nor any of his family, ever attended school, and all were basically illiterate. I wish I could say his situation was an outlier, but from what I can tell, the vast majority of people I saw on the street appeared to be struggling. We take so much for granted here in the West!

You can't blame the govt for everything. Having 7 children also contribute to being poor. Govt gives enough family planning awareness it's people who need to change. People in expect govt to give everything free to them. There are lot of poor people who have two or max three children sacrifice to get their children educated and later their lives have improved.

In India you are either well paid or just terribly underpaid. The quality of life in tier 2 cities is much better but the government has zero focus towards developing them to reduce the burden on metros. With the boom only the rich and middle class (upto some extent) will grow, the social divide will remain.

Good reply. I think if govt for a little bit changes its focus from developing tier 1 city to toward tier 2 or tier 3 alot of progress can be made. Their focus is more toward making better more better but what about the rest and I know certain industries like IT media can't be accepted to come to small states but apart from that if govt focuses on creating economic zones and you know providing small industries a chance to survive we can do better.

Young guy with no kids: you need at least 1 lakh to live without worrying in Mumbai. Banker Uncle (with 2 kids and a wife): you need a minimum of 20,000 to live in mumbai. Well, it's more related to how you can comfortably live and without making any non-useful expenses like partying, shopping, going out to expensive restaurants. If you can live a life with simple habits, you don't need a lakh to live but even if you earn less, it works fine!

Because the demand and supply thing works on services too therefore highly skilled people keeps getting a raise whereas the less skilled once get less money. It's fascinating to get a glimpse into the economic diversity of India through these street interviews. Understanding the income dynamics and various occupations in different regions helps paint a clearer picture of the country's workforce. However, it's important to remember that a few interviews might not fully represent the vast and complex job landscape of such a diverse nation. Next time one should ask her who makes her convenience of ordering food, taking out garbage, cooking food, cleaning road, watchman if the building, people who carry big big stuff on their shoulder and deliver it into their buildings. If she gets to work like a poor person for a week, her whole world will change. It's not her fault also, most people who are Little privileged don't have little awareness about real India and being in mumbai their whole life doesn't help. Mumbai is the costliest place to live or own a property in india. It has land reclaimed from sea, so it is water on three sides and nowhere to expand. Add to that more people are pouring in the city and all of them needs roof over their heads, which makes it extremely expensive. Compare that with most other cities, land all around and can expand significantly.

Lol. Mumbai is cheapest place in india of anyone lives in slum. That's why every year lakhs people come. Bt they come to live in slums. In slums rent is 4-6k which lesser than tier 3 city of india. and u can divide that with 5-7 people with no tax, maintenance. And in 1rk flats it is 15k with bills, maintenance, taxes etc. And govn don't care about slums cuz 83% slum population is not even from Maharashtra and they don't have any voting rights. And businssmen want cheap labours so they also support slum mafias.

Why do we use English in every field of India? *(Why do we need English)* 1) India is a *"multilingual"* country & we have a different language family's *(Indo-european, Dravidian, indo-iranian sino-tibetan, Tibeto-burman, Semitic, astro-asiatic Etc..)* & India has no _-national language-_ or any _-monolingual policy-_ the country of India is a *"union system'* and "all languages are respected equally" 2) Only English is recognized and used as the *"2nd administrative language"* in all states of India. (After their state's official language) 3) English is the only language used in all fields of India *(science, technology, research, education, medical, business, job field, information, space field, Navy, etc..)* 4) India is mostly dependent on *"foreign income"* & So we need English in the field of 'business' and 'workplace' 5) English is emerging as the future *"lingua franca"* of India and the World 6) English is *"indispensable"* today and giving more value to "English" after our "State language" is also good for our financial empowerment. 7) Yes there is a language problem in India! So English has grown and is growing as a language to solve that problem, This is the reality! It is better to accept reality. And at the same time all the languages of India should be respected equally.

Working class people tend to live by with modest income. Though they do not brag, but at least they have more than enough to survive the bustling streets of the city. As a person now living in the city, I constantly have to deal with chaotic scenarios concerning highways and pedestrians and how to differentiate them accordingly to avoid any confusiom while crossing the street. If you happen to be spending (and saving) wisely, chances are, you'll go far ahead in your career and just life in general. As for the people who are beyond working class, they spoil themselves with too much extravagance to the point where they're no longer able to differentiate if they're already spending too much or saving too little in a financial sense.

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH !! Imagine a simple yet powerful piece of advice that can transform your understanding of money. It happened to me when my distant cousin shared an eye-opening insight passed down through his Great Grandfather. Rachit's grandfather told him : to lead a life of basic comfort and secure future, a monthly income equivalent to 10 grams of gold is essential. In 2023, this translates to about Rs 58,905. This seemingly magical number is, in fact, the key that unlocks the door to middle-class recognition today In other words, to meet your basic needs in a Tier 1 city, a monthly income of at least 60k is essential. If you find yourself earning less supporting a family, you're in the lower middle class bracket.

You think IT people got work life balance? I mesn it differs company to company on basis of their culture and higher management but IT definitely does not belong to domains which have better work life balance. Only a few companies respect their employees time and avoid this so called hustle culture.

In country like India where animals are looked and treated as non living beings, no stray animals feel safe around them. If you look at the video again, the dog was chilling until that person suddenly running…the dog reacted as a defense mechanism.

@@phactsssssss Typical nonsense. That dog wasn't attacking. That person got scared for no reason. India treats its animals much better. Those stray dogs would have been culled in most other places.

15:50 Exactly! Middle class, lower class, lower middle class, lower-lower class... they're being taxed heavily while these same taxes doesn't affect at all to those super riches. It's about time, the government should wake up and make reforms in taxation system of India.

That women saying poor people dont want to change their surrounding is partially wrong, they want to change & earn a good living but the social structure inhibits equal opportunity. “Poverty is not an accident. Like slavery and apartheid, it is man-made and can be removed by the actions of human beings.” - Nelson Mandela

Damn, it hurts to see the guy who works for Mirchi. It's visible in his eyes. As someone who's worked in radio for so long, it feels so sad to see how things have changed. The way salaries were being thrown around in the mid 2000s to this.

I feel people who have never been in abject poverty should not comment on poor people. How do you even know what being poor really feels like? I remember an experiment which done by two guys in which they lived below poverty line for two months and it was a revelation for them. If possible search for it and read it.
