I met someone at a bar once and said to them that I loved their work and the recent role that they were in on stage. They asked me if I could just wait a few minutes and then tell them that again when they were sitting outside as they were with a producer/director talking about a new role they were after. LOL, was glad to help out by asking twice.

A little anecdote for you - many years I was in ireland, and...As I was boarding the train, Terry Jones happened to be getting off of the same carriage - it was a truly starstruck moment because while Python is important to many people, Terry for me is a genius and one of my very favourite people simply by virtue of who he is. I stepped back, allowed him to get off the train and nodded politely, and when he acknowledged me told him how much I loved watching Monty Python growing up, how much my grandfather loved watching the troupe - Mr. Jones was extremely gracious and spent a couple of minutes chatting to me as the train was still boarding anyway. Finally he offered to sign something for me, and all I had was a five pound note - he took it out of my hand, grabbed a pen and scrawled "Here is your lovely five pound note - regards, Terry Jones" and handed it back to me. It's framed now, and is one of my most treasured possessions, and it grew out of just being respectful, mindful and being poilite.

My father has worked in the music industry for years. One thing he has always done is if he sees someone he recognizes, he doesn't necessarily make the conversation about their body of work. He'll say hello, and then ask them how their tour is going, or how their shopping is going. Sometimes it's nice to not have every fan interaction be about the fan/artist interaction.

I really enjoyed this. I had a neighborhood friend whose cousin came from Texas up to study acting at a local University. He was very gregarious to us younger kids and guided us on lots of local adventures. As a result of his work in a local theater ensemble, he was scouted for a role in a film. He went on to act in supporting roles in successful films and was later a regular character on a long running TV show. To me, he was always my just neighbor's cousin who happened to succeed in a line of work that made him recognizable. He was a person whose family I knew and who had the sames aspirations, wants and needs as any other person I knew. He and his wife life a quiet life on the outskirts of Los Angeles, where I hope they enjoy a certain amount of anonymity. Thank you for addressing an issue that I was gratefully inoculated against at a formative age!

Just be nice to everybody, famous or not and you'll get a positive response most of the time I guess.

A genuine smile, a very short greet such as "Thank you", or "Love your work", and a head bow of respect. Then move on, back away, make some gesture that you are not seeking to press them for their time. If they are of a mood for more interaction, they may respond to indicate that you are welcome to stay for a (very short) extra moment. If all you get is a smile or a "Thank you" (or whatever) in response, move on. They have lives to live and things to do.

When I was in film school my professor dedicated a portion of one of his lectures to talking about how to interact with celebrities properly so it seems like common sense to me. I forget that many people don't really know how to interact with people who, for all intents and purposes, are basically modern day royalty. Thanks for sharing.

This is common sense. Don't touch anyone regardless if they are famous or not, it's just being decent. Don't interrupt famous people when they look like they don't want to be approached. Don't invade anyone's personal space when it's obvious they are having what looks to be a meeting, conversation etc. I fear no one not even famous people after all they are just people. What you do have to concern yourself with is the "earpiece" i.e. body guards. I've seen famous people and in some cases in places where no one knew who they were but from my eye contact and body language back and forth they knew I new. I didn't bust their chops or talk I just nodded hello and they nodded hello with a mutual respect that I didn't bust them in public. My question is where can I get the stand for the Raiders fertility idol in the background. That is way more interesting to me. Thanks Adam :-)

I remember thinking she is going to approached by a ton of people, so its probably not a good time. Not 5 minutes later, she was walking straight towards me outside the auditorium. I almost didn't approach Hugh Laurie in Sydney a few years back to the point I even walked away thinking "I'm sure he doesn't want to be bothered" and no one seemed to notice he was there. I then decided to go back and say hello and how much I appreciate his works, quietly of course as to not draw attention to him. I'm so glad that I did because he could not have been more kind and we spoke for a few minutes, something I'll never forget.

As I've gotten older, I've realised that there is no point to talking to famous people unless you have something specific to ask or say. Generally, the thing you like them for (movie, book, whatever) represents the best of them, so any personal interaction is going to be a step down!

lol I just posted this on another Ask Adam where it was brought up about the pros and cons of being famous but it's even more relevant here: I remember some people talking about fame when it came to celebrities who were known to be nice on camera but not when the cameras were off. They mentioned how it must be exhausting to try and be upbeat and positive all the time. As well as how some who are famous are also very busy and work hard at either their show, products, etc. How it can be exhausting trying to figure out whats up next when someone comes up to you and your trying to keep your energy for being all happy go lucky on camera and your kinda having to waste it to be nice to someone who is interrupting you or bothering you when your trying to take a break. When it can happen numerous times a day every day? And at the end of the day being so tired using all your energy to put on that "act" in some cases. It was pretty interesting hearing about it from some who are considered slightly famous etc and trying to give reasons as to why some people are like that. Now some people are probably happy go lucky a lot and others it could just be an act but it would make sense for some people if you were in those shoes where your not normally social or happy go lucky but maybe your famous cause your on a comedy show or in some comedy movies and people expect you to be all nice and positive when your trying to rush to another gig or just wanting to rest on a flight or something. That's something iv always worried about if I were to ever become famous. I wouldn't want to be famous, would enjoy being able to do movies and stuff and also get lots of money from such things but the fame is something I wouldn't really want. I would prefer to be left alone like many famous people do. This video made me think of those conversations which some people might not realize that sometimes famous people want to be left alone whereas some others might be fine or welcome fans coming up and bothering them for autograph etc. It's hard to know, and for the famous person it's hard to convey without looking like a jerk or ruining someones day cause you couldn't spare a minute to talk to them. And sometimes that can really mess up a fan and sometimes cause that fan to no longer be a fan cause the famous person was just having a bad day and didn't have the energy to put on an act.

It's the thoughtless, inconsiderate people who *need* to hear the answer who will never ask the question and will not listen to the answer and make life difficult for everybody.

Whenever I meet or bump into famous people, I just tell them how I appreciate their work, and ask them a question about what they liked about whatever my favourite thing of theirs is, or even better, talk about something you understand is a common interest! More often than not, this leads to a longer conversation than expected, smiles and handshakes, and THEM offering "do you want to grab a photo or something?" - I never under any circumstances ask for a signature. People may disagree, but a signature, whether personalised or not, can't beat a photo to capture that moment.

I "met" Adam Savage, many years ago, at the Safeway near M5 Industries one afternoon. He was shopping with his kids and I had my infant son - throwing a screaming fit in my ear. I was in SFO a couple of years ago and noticed Adam sitting in the boarding area of my flight. I started to walk over but noticed that he had earbuds in and was looking intently at a book/magazine so I left him unmolested. I had a pit pass to almost anywhere at the grand prix in Detroit 20 years or so ago, my daughter and I were walking around the trailers of the drivers and saw Paul Newman standing outside just talking in the air or something. When he saw us I could see him just freeze up a little so I gave him a small wave and as we walked by I told my daughter he was a famous actor and she had seen a few of his movies, I could see the relief in his eyes and knew he appreciated it.

Fun fact: While at a local venue in Phoenix for a concert provided by a radio station, one of the local news/weather personalities was waiting in line at the bar. Trying to be polite and not interrupt their evening. I just said "hi, " and turned back around in line. Although they were courteous and said hello back, it was the look of "what, nothing else?" that came across their face that was priceless.

At least 10 years ago Adam, you and Jamie were visiting some Friends at Infinite Loop 4, and it just happened to be one of the Wednesdays that my family spent every week going to lunch with my dad at work. And when we were entering the cafeteria, one of your friends who had been invited to join you, told my dad that you and Jamie were there today having lunch with them and a bunch of other employees, and then invited all of us to join you as well. I remember that multiple tables had to be pulled together to seat everyone in the group. I was probably only 12 or 13. It was probably one of my most favorite experiences getting to meet you both together while you were geeking out with your engineering friends. I can't remember us ever conversing, or what I said if we did. What I do remember is that we all got a picture together, and that because I didn't have anything on me for you to sign, I ran all the way back to the cafeteria to grab a paper plate for you to sign before you left! And I won't ever forget your little message you wrote on it, "Stay Curious!" I still love the fact that I got you both to sign a paper plate. That plate is one of my most treasured items. P.S. So when I heard that you had made 'tested', and channel about makers and making, I was not surprised. :)

Way back when, mid 90's, I was a trade show dealer in art prints and commissions at GenCon. Dealers show up a few hours before the doors open. Across from my booth was the Highlander TV show booth selling DVD's, posters, displays, the TV used hero sword, etc. My group got to know their teams as fellow dealers tend to chat and BS about con stuff, sales, merchandise, other cons, travel, etc. I spent time one morning talking with a guy about various stuff, and mentioned he was glad to be going home soon, but that meant dealing with his riding lawn mower and how badly it ran. I am very garage oriented, car restoration, welding, emgines, etc. Talked with him about the carb, yeah, the newer ethanol based fuels getting pushed out mess things up, all while staff brought in ropes and stanchions to set up lines. "Well, gotta cut this short. Back to work, you know," he says. "Ah, what are the ropes for?" " Kinda for me," he says sheepishly. "I'm sort of the star of the show." Huh. I didn't think to match up the posters and display with Adrian Paul, aka Dunab Macleod. " Sorry, didn't know. Haven't seen the show, on the con circuit too much." He was happy to just talk about *anything* NOT related to the show with a stranger for a change. Just be treated normally, not fawned over. Next day we picked it back up, more non-show talk. It was a nice break for him. Now if I meet someone 'famous' or some CEO, I ask questions about unrelated things to break up the expected questions. "So, tell me about your first job. What was it and what did you learn from it." I get some very candid and soecial answers as people open up with their tales, reminding people that we all had that first job somewhere and can commiserate. In short, treat 'famous people' with respect and less awe. Ask a question lime " What was your first car and how long did you have it?" I bet you get a special response as that person brings up memories from the past, well prior to their rise to recognition. What would Adam Savage's first have been?

While living in Bristol, I saw John Cleese at the train station, as a massive Monty Python fan, I was thrilled. But he was clearly not interested in interaction with anyone, he wore gloves, hat leaned over and his jacket collar were pointing up concealing as much of his face as possible. I had to pretend like nothing, so no one else would notice him too. If for some weird reason and coincidence, some of the MP team would read this, you shaped my humour, and made me smile and laugh, and helped me to always look on the bright side. Thank you all.

With all the good vibes flowing I feel like I can be honest. So here we go. I will never approach my hero’s. Regardless if it’s my only chance to interact with them. My reasoning behind this is simple. I know that meeting a hero can be a life altering event. Which is why this has to be this way since I experience the worst case scenario when I met Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants before all the drama. I think it's just a by product of the fact that people let "famous people" into their most intimate spaces so when they/we see you, we treat you like an old time friend. My mother literally bumped into Martin Short once in Las Vegas. She has half way into her apology when she recognized him. Caught off guard, all she could do was point, and say, "Oh, my God! It's you!" Without missing a beat, Martin Short gasped. Stepped back a pace. Pointed at her, and said, "Oh my God, it's YOU!"

I worked on a movie with Tom Cruise and I asked his publicist if one could speak with him. She said sure, he doesn't mind, just keep it brief and be aware if he is occupied somehow. He was in fact very approachable and friendly. But I kept it short and sweet. Something about being a big fan of Legend!

I think the fact that this person asked himself/herself that question was proof enough that this person respects their idols as human beings and will very carefully think about what to do and say. My advice: always concier the imbalance of information. You know your idol way better than they know you. Even when they realize that you are a fan, they don't know anything about you and you are still a stranger to them. A kind stranger but still a stranger. Idols can often feel like they are your best friend when in fact, they are not.

#NOTAFAMOUSPERSON - These are good words to live by for interaction with anyone you don't know. Your unknown seat mate on a flight springs to mind. A courteous "Hello" can start a conversation or not - play-it-by-ear" and watch the body language (and/or headphone use!).

I have always wondered this question. I'm not exactly in an area where famous people congregate or anything, but when I see them on TV out in the public, I always wonder how harassed they get just buying groceries and stuff. How they feel about it, and what would I do in the situation where someone I really liked was in my vicinity.

What I've heard from other celebrities is don't approach people in the toilet or when they are eating. Adding Adam's advice, don't touch people when they aren't aware, and you can hardly go wrong.

I met Marilu Henner at an after-party, where there were lots of famous and not-famous. It was an environment where we were supposed to meet and bump elbows. I stood about 5’ away and told her I really enjoyed her work. She looked at me like I was a 2-headed alien and said not a word. She claims she has a photographic memory and never forgets anything. I know I’ll never forget that.

It comes down to emotional intelligence of people, if people check their photos right beside you without interaction are they really showing that you mean something to them or they are absorbed in their need to show off that picture rather than in experience meeting you telling few kind words. If you appreciate somone either don't bother them or respectfully approach them, ask them if you can take a picture and don't take too much time

Mario Hampstead Heath is a great place to spot celebrities and just a generally great place to visit in general. On Hampstead Heath I’ve seen Ricky Gervais, Peter Capaldi (Doctor who), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Pierce Brosnan as well as a bunch of others

I agree... Play it by ear. You'll be nervous, but they might be too. I've been lucky enough to meet a lot of my heroes. Not just at comic con type things, but working for an airline originally in the terminals, where you have to be professional. But you can't help saying hello and asking how they are. You soon know who wants to chat and who wants to move on. I've only asked for one autograph (James Hetfield) in that situation, never a photo and mainly it's just cool to have shaken their hand and had a chat about their day or an album or a film. To give you an idea.... I've chatted to people like: George Lucas, Paul McCartney, Jason Statham, Jenson Button, Iron Maiden, KISS, Megadeth, Voivod and many other actors, some internationally famous many just UK centric. One of the nicest was Eva Green, at first I didn't realise who she was, it was about 6months after her Bond film. Christopher Lee was a true gentleman and was more than happy to chat. I now work in an office, so over the past 8yrs I've had to make do with conventions!

Having worked in various segments of the entertainment industry for most of my life, I just treat celebrities as I would anyone else. This means that if I see them out in public I treat them with the same indifference as I do everyone else. If I am working with them I treat them with professional courtesy and keep doing my job. In most cases this works out just fine but of course there are exceptions. The worst are the celebs who are full of themselves and expect special treatment. They often travel with an entourage and make ridiculous demands on everyone around them. This is especially prevalent with rap and pop stars.

I think it is about motive, if someone is a tru fan then they will take into consideration there hero/heroin's feelings, by telling that person you admire/respect them, they are receiving something From the fan. If all you want is a selfie to brag about then the fan is receiving something and that is a gift not to be demanded or expected. Good manners and thinking of others is key.

I have only met 2 celebrities in my life; Aaron Tippin & Dr. Ben Carson. Neither of whom did I have the presence of mind to get photos with due to the surprise of bumping into them. Both were very friendly, but I tried not to impose.

Woah I can imagine the hesitation to approach someone like Tom Waits (a personal hero of mine) as much as you would want to interact with them.
