I was diagnosed with nystagmus at a very young age but I know nothing about it. I grew up knowing I was different from everyone and i couldn't see as well as others but no one ever really told me why. Now I'm in my 20's and learning as much as I possibly can. My new eye doctor just diagnosed me with nystagmus a few weeks ago, but I've had symptoms my whole life, so he suggested it might be congenital. He was surprised that none of my doctors said anything before because it's so obvious just by watching my eyes for a few seconds. The main reason I don't play sports is because it's hard to track things, and it gets worse in the dark. I've gotten several injuries and am just clumsy in general because I can't track things and have trouble focusing on things. I'm starting vision therapy soon, so hopefully it will get better! Thanks for making videos so I can learn more about my condition! ❤

Nice to see a video about it. Have it since I was 3 months old. Honestly, visually it never bothered me much, but in recent years (I’m 40 now), I do feel like my eyes have more difficulty focusing. People point something out to me and I can’t see it because my eyes tend to go everywhere except the point I’m supposed to focus on. Also my eyes feel a lot more tired, but that might just be an age thing. Looking at screens constantly also doesn’t help. I’m also much more self-conscious about it now than I used to be, avoiding longer eye contact with people. Oh well, it is what it is.

Hi Jaros. Over time just like other muscles the ocular muscles get weaker especially strained as in your case. It however does not have to remain that way. I have congenital, bilateral nystagmus, diagnosed at 6 months of age. My eyes move together in all directions. My vision is 20/40 in the right eye and 20/50 on the left. My hand eye coordination and depth perception are flawed, which affect my balance. My corneas are soft, which can cause migraines when I catch a flash of light or reflection. The shaking increases when I’m tired. My vision does not adjust quickly when looking up from my computer screen or a book. I can have fuzzy vision for 20 minutes after working on close work. To see best, I have to bend my head down to see at the top of my eye. This will give me an RBF effect, especially if I’m concentrating. This really unnerves people. I find that to listen well I need to look down or bow my head down so my eyes don’t distract me. I can drive, but only surface streets and mountain roads, no highways or freeways. Reflections get to me badly. With all this, I know that my incidence is mild and others with this are legally blind. I am not. Thank you for answering on this topic. Happy New Year!

Thank you! I'm a COVID longhauler (nurse) from March 2020 and was severely oxygen deprived, left home to stroke, seize and I had no help. It was AWFUL. So many trips to the ER,911 called by many of my doctors, only to not be admitted. I'm undergoing hyperbaric chamber, and been on Ivermectin for cereal months now, along with a local holistic nurse practitioner and nutritional chiropractor, but man this is difficult. Neuro sent me to opthamoligist who sent me to a neuro opth who I'm seeing later July. Optho said optic neuritis or nystagmus. I used to teach zumba as well. It's all so debilitating because my brain and eyes don't feel attached, and everything is in slow motion, for some one who was a type A extrovert energizer bunny.....so this is a big rough. I had a LOT of neuro issues. I did a short stint with Fluvox per the Americas Frontline Doctors who are awesome in helping those of us who really want to know what's going on, and not just push a shot ("vaccine") that is further from healthy. Anyway, anything you add would be appreciative. I see black spots in my right eye (both were so burry from the start of the infection after the pneumonitis, and it went into inflammatory storm), and can't move my head fast at all. I can't look at too much stimuli like items on a shelf at the store. I was dizzy for over a year (until I met Ivermectin, Fluvox and now the hyperbaric chamber). No more blurry vision but the right eye black dots still there and it's only when I move my head - side to side or up and down. Not at rest or in one position. My first thoughts were that exactly...MS, GBS, etc. I never got the flu shot, nor will I get the COVID shot. I still have positive antibodies and even if I didn't, I'd not. Anyway, any information to share would be great. Thank you! And THANK YOU for speaking about your seeing this secondary to 'vaccines.'

I’ve done VRT twice, it really doesn’t help me since mine comes from the central nervous system and not the vestibular system.I barely can even read, it will trigger more dizziness/vertigo. He had some complications including brain bleeds that may have affected his visual center in his brain; also had Retinopathy of Prematurity which did resolve without treatment. He started with horizontal nystagmus around 5 months of age. Would this still be considered congenital? Or acquired since it is possibly/likely due to complications of prematurity?

Hello Dr Julie, Iam 53 year old man and have congenital nystagmus which has also wrecked my confidence and life so as to speak. Although I can drive but at night it’s a bit difficult because of my poor myopic vision. But my real problem is the null point of the compensatory positioning of the head, which may be appearing very abnormally placed or funny as almost all who face to talk to me have laughed on my face and it sinks me and it happens only when I talk animatedly. Secondly my social life is a wreck because I can’t fix my gaze to my left as my eyes begin to oscillate and head begins to wiggle and jerk like a marionette. So I try to avoid looking to my left instantly which have made me lose friends who think Iam haughty ,arrogant and disrespectful . Also I can’t pick or identify familiar faces of people waving from inside their cars while driving as I can’t see well through their windscreen so I naturally will ignore them but I can’t pick or decipher their acknowledgement at all ! Thirdly whenever I speak to a woman she always tends to cover or adjust her neckline or cleavage be it in a blouse shirt or anything thinking I peer into it when I do nothing of the sort it’s only my null point and head positioning which gives the impression and out of shame I don’t disclose my problems. Is there any hope? My self esteem is crawling at the moment. Fourthly Iam cannot play a sport well because hand eye coordination is dismal. Please can you help me?

Can cluster headache or migraine cause nystagmus? I've had a cluster headache attack today, but I woke up with nystagmus this morning and the CH attack was this evening and now the nystagmus is worse. My eyes is moving in sideways motion towards the right, but my CH is on the left side always. I have not been to a neurologist since 2019 and I get no medicine for my CH, but lately I discovered that Voltaren diclofenac is making the CH attacks shorter and not that painfull. I have had CH attacks every other day or more for 3,5 years and have been commtted to hospital twice for this as they thought it could be a stroke. The last time I was in hospital is exactly 4 years today, I remember this as I had to leave my unchles 70th birthday and go to the E.R and was put into the hospital for observation over night, but they didn't do anything other than giving me medicine for migraine, it was incetion Imigrane that was supposed to shorten the attacs or something, but it only made it worse as I took the incetion and my face got so swollen I couldn't breathe and I had to go to the E.R to have oxygen for treatment. I later got oxygen at home, but it didn't work so they didn't give me more and since then I have not had any medicine other than Imigrane tablets that I think might have made me have triggered more attacks as when I didn't take the medicine anymore as it made me nochious I also didn't have as many attacks, it now lowered from up to 8 attacks a day to approximately twice a week, but then it got worse again and in 2019 I had attacks every day except June, and in 2020 I had attacks approximately 3-4 times a week but with several attacks the same day at the same time starting at 1-2 PM to 1130-12 PM sometimes. The attacks last around 1-3 hours each. Today the attack stopped after around 25 minutes but the nystagmus is still there, and the numbness in my left eye and cheek. I have a eyelid that decides to close by itself when I have CH attacks and my eye drips and my left nostril is stuffed and runny too but this stopped when the attack stopped and my nose and eye stoppes rinning when my eyelid opens usually when the attack stoppes. Sorry about my English grammar, I'm Norwegian. I forgot to mention I am a 44 year old woman, my picture is from 2016 so it's old. I have been wondering if it could be MS as I also have urine retention or incontinence every time I get a CH attack and now I also have urinary tract infection, which I have had chronically since I was 2, and it have some of the same symptoms, but the urologist can not find anything wrong with my kidneys or bladder that causes the urine retention and that is why I think of MS as I also have had numbness in my legs and arms and double visio, but my eyes seems to be fine according to the eye specialist. I was also sent to a psychologist as they thought it might be just me being crazy. The psychologist didn't find anything wrong apart from my already diagnosed ADHD since childhood, and Fibromyalgia since my early teens, I also have Menières disease so it could be one of those conditions causing my nystagmus also. I'm afraid to tell my doctor as he might take my driver's license away, and I really need to have a driver's license to get around as there is no bus or anything as I live outside the city on the countryside and can not afford to move. I know when I get a CH attack as I can feel it in my eye a few hours prior to the attack and I also get a bit moody and hungry and can not look at flashing lights like on TV when the pictures shift fast or watching programs that has flashing lights and I also react to loud sounds the day before, so it's really no danger for having an attack while driving, I never had one coming while driving and my first CH attack was in 2012. The pain is so extreme that I couldn't drive if I wanted to either, I would have to stop the car. It usually takes ten minutes from the start of the attack to it reaching it's highest pain level, so I could easily have stopped anyway.

Helo Dr. Julie, I'm not sure if I have Nystagmus. My eyes definitely move in bizarre, involuntary ways frequently. It's like you said when I look up or off to the side. People look at me like wow, why do your eyes move like that. This all started around 8 years ago and got gradually worse. I do it more when I'm stressed, anxious, tired, bored, or even excited. But, other than the fact I wear glasses and I wore glasses before this started. There is no problem with my vision. Does having Nystagmus always affect your vision? I also don't recall taking a vaccine or new medication around the times this started.

Then at 21 it came back. My eye dr was an idiot and and update my far away script but did not give me the progressive, the shaking did not go away. It goes through phases where it gets worse but it’s always there and affects my sleep. I got my script updated with progressives and a stronger script but it has not gone away this time. Depending on why you have developed nystagmus, yes it can change and even worsen with time. If it is a new development, it is important to be evaluated by a neurologist to determine a cause. After that, there are many steps that can be taken depending on the cause of the movement.

@visontherapy3 жыл бұрын
Generally strabismus does not cause nystagmus. Usually nystagmus exists and due to decreased eyesight, strabismus will develop. In some cases, surgery can reduce the amount of nystagmus and in others, it may not change much. I recommend having a consultation prior to any decision on surgery.

Can a person with nystagmus get a vision of 6/6?
@visontherapy3 жыл бұрын
Per Dr. Julie: If they are within a few lines of that before therapy, it is possible. They would have to be 20/30 or better (6/12 or better).

this started at a construction sight years ago... I did not have ear protection and upon leaving the sight and driving home when I got out of my vehicle I stumbled off to the left 20 feet . For hours my eyesight was like a stuttering film traveling up and down but jumping up to the top over and over. Today after lawn mowing without ear protection I 'm dizzy again and eyes are going horizontal. I definitely have fluid always inside my right ear as I play drums 2 hours daily sometimes more. When you talk about the eyes I am a monocular vision candidate where as I can make either one in charge but they never work together especially under stress. I find less noise and less movement until it subsides the only answer. Always felt playing soccer was a good practice for depth perception skills and I imagine head trauma could be a factor as well....pretty sure it's fluid as I hear it move when drinking coffee or laying down after drumming. Usually blowing my nose always clears a lot of it and sugar manifests more fluid is my observation.
