Thank you Tatyana for this very important reminder. In my attempt to cover the beginning elements of learning a piece I often overlook the 1st finger and the tension/relaxation in the Barr portion of the chord. Thank you for this very important lesson.

The exercises in this and your other barré video are great tools to learn how to focus to play that technique well. A common mistake with left hand technique is to use too much tension, especially when you need more strength, which is the case whenever you put your hand in barré position. Either your fingers are stuck and can't move efficiently because of excess pressure, or they fly off very far from the fretboard. These exercises show that barrés have different shapes and points of focus. It's not just "put your index finger across the fret and press as hard as possible". If you play a song with a lot of barrés and you play like that, odds are your muscles will be exhausted before finishing the piece. You have to determine the most efficient way to focus your strength throughout what you play, and these exercises are perfect building blocks on the way to get good, natural barré technique.

very helpful tutorial. villa-lobos etude 1 is a challege for left hand stamina, a lot of bar chords, plus a section of finger positions, the left hand moving down the fretboard as the right hand plays arpeggios. i still haven't figured out the best approach, but as a recreational player, i do the best i can with this enjoyable piece.

One thing that my teacher told me and helped me to have a consistent and good barre is not using the 1 finger strength to do it instead use all the arm weight and use the thumb as a point of lever

Of course Tatyana has a very good guitar. It's a must for a professional. As for yourself, if you're serious about learning to play, you must make every effort to get a suitable guitar. Nowadays even very low cost guitars can sound quite good and can be set up to be very easy to play. If you don't know what to look for, try to find someone to go with you who does. Good luck!
